Soul Asylum on a major? Are the
last bastions of Husker-inspired
Minneapolis chorus twang getting
big budget treatment? Sacrilege!
These dudes are all altitude, long
haired, brew-swigging, balls-out
rockers whose previous efforts
literally reek of the Midwest
barrooms that spawned them. The
production team of Ed Stasium and
Lenny Kaye fails to capture the
band's sweat and gristle so
eloquently as Husker Du's Bob
Mould did on their three previous
efforts. Soul Asylum is a frenetic,
sound of the moment unit better
suited to sonic minimalism than
Kaye and Stasium's arena rock
attack. Nonetheless, they've set
themselves apart as jarring
songwriters, a tradition that
continues and sweetens with
"Hang Time" The relentless grind
of "Little Too Clean the "Whiter
Shade of Pale-esque balled
Endless Farewell and the
undeniable hooks of "Sometime to
Return prove a volatilo mix of
musical tradition. Dave Pirner's
vocals approach Bryan Adams
strength, a step above his usual
beer drenched growl. While
mellowing from the past few LP's,
Soul Asylum has moved toward
increasingly accessible terrain
without losing the strength and
energy of earlier days. MG
NUCLEAR ASSAULT
Survive
IRS
Currently one of the most
undorratod bands, Nuclear Assault
finally gets a chance to reach an
audience who should definitely
hear them. In their first major label
effort the boys from the Big Applo
continue to pump out abrupt speed
metal that doesn't sound copped
off some headline act or hyped with
Insecurities. The blast is a vicious,
head-on, hyper-charge of molten
Iron that is heavy and stays pointed
in the proper direction. Their work
gains extra depth from a lyrical
content that carries messages from
the street and the heart. Nothing
is overdone in the mix, so it forms
a pulsating attack of killer riffs and
rhythms. If you're going to air the

Colln Newman of Wire at the Fillmore, San Francisco.
WIRE
A Bell Is A Cup Until it is Struck
Enigma/Mute
So I'm at the Old Fillmore and Wire is performing a host of subtle melodies that echo through the hall.
It's loud, the band isn't that tight, and a few of us are quite bored. Watching the drummer plod away at his
stationary snare really sums up the live show. Then I got home, played "A Beli..." and realized that the band's
essence an vinyl is corie and pulses with sonic creativity. They produce a relaxing and entertaining mood.
Half of the ten tracks on this release are standouts. There are melodies on this record that show the genius
of this foursome, though some of it seems too rehashed. Tracks like "Kidney Bingos," "Silk Skin Paws" and
"Follow The Locust" are particularly appealing. While most of Wire's live material did nothing for me, listening
to the record really fortified my admiration of this pioneer band JS
COLIN NEWMAN
It Seems
Restless/Crammed Discs
Wire's vocalist Collin Newman has dazzled us in the post with the haunting "A-2" Lp, the totally bizare "...The
Singing Fish" Lp, and even the avant garde poppiness of Commercial Suicide." It is therefore not surprising
that he turns out such a fine performance on this new platter. "It Seems" sounds much like rejected Wire
material adapted and embellished by Newman in his own unique style. Brushing on the edges of pop, Newman
croons his unusual vocal charisma over an ever-changing moody, mellow beat. There are no distinct stand-
outs in this ten song collection, but the whole work is an enjoyable musical entity unto itself. JS
guitar or bang the head, make sure
it's to Nuclear Assault. At least their
drive is a bit more realistic. PH
UDO
Animal House
ACA
Accept was considered one of
the brightest front runners of the
new wave of British heavy metal.
Demonstrating a definite knack for
hook and drive, as well as a sense
of speed and power, accompanied
by the piercing, almost violent
ahnaks of fatigue-clad vocalist Udo
Dirkschneider, Accept was certainly
a force to be reckoned with, Having
amiably split with said powerhouse
late last year, Dirkschneider has re-
emerged with a convincing yet
annoyingly safe solo project
Anthems abound in this disc, but
one can't help but rue the absence
of rebellion and outrage apparent
on earlier efforts. Regardless,
"Animal House" is better than most-
of the swampy mire known as
heavy metal. The first three tracks
set the tone, thundering about like
an out of control battlewagon. The
rest of the album doesn't quite
maintain this pace, Udo's bid for
solo stardom might pan out, given
his distinct execution and strong
performances by bandmates War-
lock and Sinner, ex Euro-heavies.
Though safer and far more typical
than one would hope, Udo's solo
debut still rates as a winner. MG.
KING DIAMOND
Them
Roadracer/MCA
A King Diamond album is like a
schlocky horror flick you rent on a
boring Tuesday night. Where lact
year's "Abigail" spun the yam of
a vengeful stillbom, this time the
King hashes out a tale of battle with
his spiritually possessed grand-
mother. Seems that Granny's been
in the asylum for decapitating
Grandpa under the guidance of
Them," but she's out now and
throwing the King's family into an
uproar, True to form, King Diamond
doesn't write catchy metal-cum-
pop numbers, but instond focuses
on action oriented schlock opera.
No overwhelming choruses or
memorable riffing here, but the
strong musicianship provides more
than adequate background for the
metal monarchs tale of childhood
angst. Ranging from a high-pitched
falsetto to a low, menacing growl.
Diamond's attack lapses into self
parady at times, but no more so
than a Romanian voiced Bela
Lugosi or Lon Chaney-like narrator
Though not exactly the Edgar Allen
Poe of the headbanger's set, the
King once again emerges as a
"gather 'round the campfire"
storyteller, MG
