THE DAMNED
The Light At The End Of The
Tunnel
MCA, Double CD
Billed as an authentic "best of
the Damned," this double set con-
tains well over a hundred minutes
of classic Damned music. This
28-track collection doesn't include
every hit-for example, "Wait for
the Blackout" and "Dozen Girls"
both single hits, are left off. It
definitely spans the years, though.
From the beginning we hear "New
Rose." "Neat Neat Neat," and "I
Feel Alright," followed by the
classic tunes off Machine Gun
Ettiquette," Smash It Up," "Love
Song" "Plan 9 Channel 7" and "I
Just Can't Be Happy Today" It goes
right up to the present (since the
departure of Captain Sensible) with
a handful of tracks off Phantas-
magoria and Anything. Even
though a lot of tracks that are
noteworthy are missing, this collec-
tion shows the force of one of the
first punk outfits and the evolution
of their sound. This is a great band
and a very stimulating selection
that is worthy of any listener. B.S.
GAYE BYKERS ON ACID
Drill Your Own Hole
Caroline
Gaye Bykers on Acid look the
part in their Mad Max-style studded
leather and dirty scummy clothes.
Their American debut, a sound-
track for a feature-length video by
the same title, finds the Bykers
exploring Motorhead territory, while
striking a balance somewhere be-
tween Eric Burden and the Cult.
Sixties psychedelia combined with
Marshall Stack blues suggests the
likes of Zodiac Mindwarp, though
these guys are rooted in funk. Gaye
Bikers On Acid is currently a UK hit
phenomenon. Their initial U.S.
outing leaves the listener fascin-
ated by a derivative, yet distinct,
approach. M.G.
NAKED PREY
40 Miles from Nowhere
Frontier
Exploding from word one, these
Tucson, Arizona, rockers take off
like a warm set of Swiss bearings
(yes, with speed cream). With a
sound similar to the Georgia
Satellites (only hella harsher), they
have big, big, drum sounds and
guitar-down-your-throat attitudes.
These guys sound best loud. Come
to think of it, who doesn't? When
they do get around to slowing the
songs down, they are oddly dis-
turbing: check the "Wichita,
Lineman" cover for proof slick. If
1988 is going to be the year of the
guitar comeback, then Naked Prey
are gonna be at the head of the
class. RJS II

SISTERS OF MERCY
Floodland, CD
Merciful/WEA
2001
RS
XNO
COLLECTION
Andrew Eldritch returns with his
Sisters Of Mercy. Since most of the
members quit and formed the Mis-
sion and Andrew released an
album with the terrible Sisterhood
outfit, there was definitely curiosity
in many minds about what the new
S.O.M. would sound like. Well, the
spirit lives on. Eldritch continues a
sound somewhat similar to the old
SO.M. with haunting melodies and
his deep crooning voice, Keyboards
and solid drum work dominate this
eerie yet "dance-floor" sound,
which will still have the old fans
smiling. "This Corrosion" has an
irresistible syntho-pop beat that
aims for airwave spins, but it's the
stronger "Dominion/Mother
Russia" and "Lucretia" that cap-
ture the quality of S.Q.M. Eleven
tracks, around sixty minutes of
music including a new version of
"Colours," which James Ray
originally released, are present on
this CD. Dark, moody and enjoy-
able, this Sisters Of Mercy reloase
is definitely good-a bit different,
but Eldritch has pulled it through.

LESS THAN ZERO
Original Soundtrack
Def Jam/Columbia
Put this platter on your turntable,
side one, fifth track, and ask your
friends to guess who the artist is.
No guesses so far? It's Glenn
Danzig, and can this guy sing. Who
ever knew the guy had so much
talent? He also wrote the song that
Roy Orbison sings for the Lp.
Except for these two songs and the
Bangles track, a cover of Simon
and Garfunkel's "Hazy Shade of
Winter," this Lp is pure junk. It's a
terrible shame to hear Slayer but-
cher "In-A-Gadda-Da- Vida" and
Poison murder Kiss' "Rock and
Roll All Night." It's total puke
material. Unless you're a Glenn
Danzig fan, avoid this black piece
of...wax. M.H.
dB's
Sound of Music
I.R.S.
No Julie Andrews or Edelweiss
here, my friends (and I use the term
"friends" loosely). Just real good
music from the band that stands for
decibels. The dB's have been
hanging since 1979. They have
gone through hard times, but they
keep plugging back into their
amps. Every song on this record
has its own special quality and
might be immediately comparable
to R.E.M. or Let's Active, two bands
that were probably influenced by
the dB's. RJS II
LAUGHING HYENAS
Merry Go Round
Touch & Go
Ann Arbor's Laughing Hyenas
conjures up scathing visions of a
slanky, hellish cinematic noir. Ex-
Negative Approach screamer John
Brannon trades skinhead angst for
a Frank Sinatra-meets-Apocalypse
Now primal scream on a six-song
debut presenting the best material
from last year's well received demo
Undeniably a Midwest affair, the
Hyenas pick up where "Fun
House" left off, at once physical
and undeniably bluesy, certainly
nowhere close to the ground
Negative Approach treaded. Bran-
non's lyrics bear a strong
resemblance to Nick Cave's scata-
logical yammerings, while also tak-
ing cues from Tom Waits and
Muddy Waters. Brannon's subjects
include love, death, pain and a host
of other dark-minded musings on
this debut effort from one of the
Mid-West's darkest sons. M.G.
ALL ABOUT EVE
In The Clouds, Ep
Mercury/Phonogram
This is All About Eve's first major
label release. Their re-make of "In
The Clouds" is exceptional;
Julianne's beautiful vocals are
backed by a melancholy melody
that adds depth to her tones. You
might be familiar with this band via
their association with The Mission.
Julianne did some tracks on their
God's Own Medicine Lp, and Mick
Brown, The Mission's drummer,
plays on two tracks presented here.
All About Eve mixes soft rhythms
with electric sense on the three
songs that reveal a band well
balanced and sincerly directed.
This is an original band to be on
the lookout for. J.S.
ZODIAC MINDWARP & THE
LOVE REACTION
High Priest of Love
Food LTD
Here it comes, right in your face.
the rebirth of the mid-70's power
rock sound-and the trendies are
loving it. Sounding like an early
AC/DC protege, Zodiac Mindwarp.
leads his troops through cock
rock's most famous hour, hitting
hard with those raspy, wicked
vocals that sound like Bon Scott
meeting Stephen Tyler with
Wolfman Jack present for the inter-
view. Tons of bluesy guitar riffs,
heavy and hard, are supplemented
by simple beats that sound all too
similiar after a bit. But it's catchy,
and it does rock. The style is
definitely there, and so is the wall
of sound. The band is tight and
destined for stardom. This stuff ex-
cels, especially the title track, but
give me the original any day. M.H.
JAMAICA BOYS
Jamaica Boys
Warner Bros
What happens when you put a
former member of the Saturday
Night Live band, Chaka Khan's
baby brother and a founding
member of Return to Forever in a
recording studio? Well for one,
there would probably be a whole
lot of respect going around, and for
two, plenty of good music coming
out of those sessions. Aside from
their own obvious talents, The
Jamaica Boysa benefit from the
talents of Marcus Miller, composer,
lyricist, bassist, keyboard player,
saxophonist and drummer, who
produced the album. Very little can
go wrong. The songs themselves
are seamless, almost perfect
pieces of soul, with a third world
feel bubbling behind it all. It is hard
to say if this will become a hit in any
market, but it sure is a great first
effort. RJS II
