"THe Up Lift mofo pArty PlaN"
After rehearsing for the last few months, Metallica is in the studio record-
ing a new Lp. The Metallicatz are jamming out all new tunes, which are
said to be of the Ride The Lightning nature. However, all we've heard is
that it's some "pretty sideways stuff," and from these sessions will come
two 12" singles and the as yet untitled Lp. The band seems to be more
than happy with all this new material. Watch for live dates later in the
year. Also, congratulations are in order for Kirk's marriage to longtime
friend Rebecca. The private ceremony on a hill in Berkeley, CA, was a
beautiful occasion, with a who's who in attendance. No name dropping
here, but we will say that all the Metallica members wore ties. By the
way, their Cuff 'Em All video has gone platinum and is still selling. Sorry,
no Teen Beat pics this month.... Living legend Ron Reyes (ex-Black
Flag) is back in action with a new, totally kick-ass band called Crash
Bang Crunch Pop! They were holed up in Vancouver, BC, practicing for
eight months, but they have just finished a little West Coast tour. These
guys look like Red Kross meets Ted Nugent, and that's about what they
sound like, too. They're louder than hell and go completely nuts onstage.
In LA. they played the Palomino (a straight country-western place, usually)
with Hard As Nails, Cheap As Dirt and none other than ex-Deadboy
Cheetah Chrome's new combo, who also rocked the house. The even-
ing ended with members of all the bands jammin' onstage on a crazed
version of Iggy's "Search and Destroy" and the Deadboys" old hit, "Sonic
Reducer. It was rad....Crash Bang Crunch Pop! is headed up to
Vancouver again to do some dates with D.O.A. (back from their two-month
North American Tour as you read this). Check 'em out if they come to
your town, you won't be disappointed. Canadian wild man Chris
Houston is doing an American tour with Mojo Nixon. This should be
acoustic psychopath night, seeing as how these boys are friendly rivals
and both raving maniacs... Bootleg Misfits records are cropping up
like unemployed stock brokers. Surfacing primarily in the L.A. area, 7"
and 12" discs copped from live performance CDs are the current rage.
At least ten were circulating at last count. Having become quite frustrated
with these bootleggers as well as those reproducing various Misfits and
Samhain t-shirt designs, Glenn Danzig is starting to take action. One
reason for all the bootlegging is that the price of real Misfits vinyl has
gone through the roof. So, while Glenn is in the studio working on a new
project with Rick Rubin for Def Jam, he is also preparing to re-issue three
Samhain Lps and a double Lp that will come with a comic book, featur-
ing art by Sean Wyett and others. This should coincide with the release
of the Samhain CD and the Misfits 2 CD. With Glenn so busy, how long
will we be waiting?...The Mission's new Lp came out in March. They
came to the U.S. for some promo gigs in NY. and LA...Fields of the
Nephilim are coming over for some dates too, promoting a new Lp that
will be out in the near future. And while you're looking for those releases,
check into a new U.K. band called The Beloved. They're sort of a cross
between New Order, the Mission and the Smiths, with interesting
results. Japan's Gastunk is coming to the US. to record their new
Lp in Los Angeles....Megadeth just released their third Lp So Far, So
Good. So What!, continuing in the sentimental vein of the last two. On
their press release Dave Mustaine is quoted as saying, "People can see
that there are no meat by-products in Megadeth. When it comes to music,
there's no cereal filler. We're the real gravy train." Gee, Dave, where does
gravy come from? Or maybe you're comparing your music to dog
food?...7 Seconds claim they are not changing their name and their
label is back in action, but through the backing of a different label....The
Brigade has ended, but Shawn Stern vows to continue, either under
the Brigade banner or with a new name. The BYO label is celebrating
five years in the biz, though they are still in debt. Congrats on keeping
the spirit alive and always experimenting. The Surf MC's have replaced
one overly vocal member and are now ready to go after the "black urban
market. Are these guys serious?... Ex-Negative Approach drummer
(and Midwest skate rager) O.P. Moore has a new band together, Crossed
Wire, and they played this year's Surf Ohio contest in Dayton. O.P. also
works at a skate shop in Detroit called Squeely's; skate in and say hi!
benefit concert was held at the Weinberg Center in Maryland. Those con
tributing time and energy included Fugazi (misspelled here as Foogazi
in Jan, ish., sorry. T-ed) with lan MacKaye. (3) Three with Jeff Nelson
and Frederick, MD, locals Second Nature, who organized the event. The
music was great and the cause was even greater. Over $1,500 was raised
for the Heartly House, a refuge and resource for sexually abused kids.
