LOCALLY BEAT...Backstage at one of several recent Bay Area
Untouchables gigs, we found Willy McNeil (among SFSU dormatory
girls avidly seeking autographs) sporting a fresh THRASHER hood.
Longtime skate enthusiasts/musicians present were Derek Breakfield
(bass), Gerry Miller (vocals), and teen dream Anthony Brewster (key-
boards). Clyde Grimes (guitar) (the brother of Carve Master Marty) for-
feited the catered fruit and fresh O.J., and made a beeline for the crib (girl
in tow) at the first opportunity. Our own gregarious Kevin Ancell heckled
non-stop, reminding Chuck Asherneese (vocals) that he'd taught him all
those "bad" dance moves. The band expects to release their next re-
cord around the first of the year on MCA....CHI-TOWN...Greetings
from the windy city! NYC garage-cum-garbage band Pussy Galore
played a rousing. noisy set at Exit on September 30. Drummer Bob
Bert's kit contained a hollow radiator, thick springs and shitty sheet
metal. This heavy metallurgy, coupled with three scratchy guitars, led to
a confrontation with a yupscale manager during a sound check, who told
them to "turn it down." Pussy's new album, Right Now! (on Caroline)
was produced by Chicago's Steve "Big Black" Albini. Pussy was
going to bed down at Albini's house, but his producer's couch and
honeymoon suite were occupied by the band The Honeymoon Killers.
Pleasant dreams. EASTERN FRONT...Agnostic Front's Steve
Martin vs. Jello Biafra! On Jello's spoken word tour axeman Martin,
covering the speech for a local Long Island newspaper, debated the
ex-Dead Kennedy after his denouncement of Agnostic Front as racist,
facist thugs. Martin, the only legitimate press person there, more than
surprised Biafra with his eloquence and intelligence. Ex-Articles of
Faith-ers Vic Bondi (currently teaching at Boston University) and bas
sist Dave Shields are working on a new band. A solo acoustic effort from
Bondi, entitled "Ghostdances," should be appearing on vinyl soon. Ian
MacKaye's latest outfit is going under the name Foogazi and has begun
playing a few shows in Washington DC. Ex-DYS/Dag Nasty vocalist
Dave Smalley has begun practicing with ex-Descendents Bill Steven-
son, Stephen Egerton and Karl Alvarez (ex-Massacre Guys) in a band
called ALL. An album should be appearing soon with a tour to follow.
Dag Nasty have seemingly relocated from Washington, DC, to Los An
geles, where they will begin working on a third Lp for the Giant label.
Beantown beer gods Gang Green, who recently released a full Lp, enti-
tled You Got it (Roadracer), are beginning work on a full-length film with a
number of yet-unnamed bands....L.A. TER. From the home of 6.1's,
paper, scissors, rock and those fabulous Lakers, a new notes to dribble
on: Glenn Danzig has been seen conversing again with man-about-town
Rick Rubin Danzig is apparently writing songs for the legendary Roy
Orbison. Motley Crue's producer, Tom Werman, will be producing The
Cult's new Lp. Sounds scary!...Johnny Winter played the Palace and
showed all those 70s upstarts how it's done with tunes like "3 Degree"
and "Johnny B. Goode." Salba was there with his Heavy Friends doing it
up right. Lions & Ghosts had their record release party at the Probe in
L.A.. after signing to EMI America with their Lp Lick of Lime. The new
thing in L.A. seems to be music festivals. Revivalist or what? The rock
memorabilia collection at Los Angeles' Hard Rock Cafe was further en-
hanced recently when Redd Kross and company presented the famed
restauranteurs with one of their guitars. Those Jet Boys sold out the
Whiskey to celebrate the earthquake. In Venice Beach the locals keep
one leg up for a rockin' blues rasta band-RnBnRnB-with Venice
George on guitar, H.S. Masao on bass, Louis Dread on drums and Pat
French on blues harp. A swell band! The Hangmen are rockin' so hard
we are experiencing some major dollar eanhquake damage, so catch
'em when you can. They have now signed to a major label. (Are some of
these guys really from Boise? Is their lead singer an ex-skate rat?) The
Red Devils are still together and surviving the slow pace of major label
hunting. They recently played a killer bar-b-que in a happening part of
town. 100 yards away a skateable ditch was skated long ago by first gen
Z-boyz. Seen skating the cement and shredding harder than Fawn Hall
were J-Ray, Troy Mack and D. Drive. In attendence were Ting Sao.
Louie Dc3, Dan-O and Paul Rossler with wife, Helen, plus kids. The
pool was in session with plenty of water waders. Water heads included
Texacala Jones, whose new group Texorcist will make yer head spin.
