After many happy years of skating
in Dallas ditches such as Harry
Hines, the "W", and countless
others, I packed my Elephant wrench
and moved to SF. Along the way, my
car broke down on I-40 in Albuquer
que and I stayed at Motel 6. Unfortun-
ately, the ditches were full of water
so my Black Gold wheels remained
packed until I hit Pacifica. Dallas
winters are nice and dry. So much
for enchantment. I just thought!
would write to tell Dave "I just started
skating last week" Buskirk to check
out some of his dad's Skateboarder
magazines (published before Vision
tried "to get on the board market").
Then grab a 6x24" solid oak deck
and do some Christies.

STRIP JOINT
Phuc, I bought some Thunderbolts
a while back and I thought they were
the greatest 'til I went to go tighten
them one day and one had stripped.
You know, the top spun with the nut.
Eventually, they all stripped. I could
not loosen or tighten 'em. So, I got
a hacksaw, and hacked them all off.
I never used a screwdriver, though.
Only a socket, hacksaw, pliers and
five bucks to buy the damn bolts.

MY FELLOW AMERICANS
The eyes of the world are upon us.
Skateboarding is a thriving sport that
gracefully illuminates freedom,
creativity and individuality. These
three things, along with foresight and
the ideals of democracy, are what this
country was founded on. Like the
early colonial rebels, skateboarders
are true Americans. Yet, must we
glorify the name of a man who illegal-
ly sent money to a murderous gang
of terrorists responsible for the horri-
ble deaths of thousands of innocent
Nicaraguans? I speak of none other
than "Ollie" North. I believe he has
forever shamed the name of the no-
hands aerial. Not only did he ignore
the will of Congress, but he helped
the so-called "freedom fighter" Con-
tras buy more weapons to kill more
people. Nicaragua is a country we
are not at war with. It is a country with
a democratically elected govern.
ment. These are the facts. I say let
us honor a true American with the
no-handed aerial. I say let us forever
banish the word "Ollie" from the
skater's vocabulary. I say let us
rename the "Ollie" the "Lincoln."

SK8 IN THE U.S.S.R.
I recently went to the Soviet Union.
Of our four stops-Moscow, Yerevan,
Kiev, and Lenigrad-Yerevan was my
favorite city for skating. Yerevan is a
city of 1.5 million people and the first
place I saw real skaters. The boards.
they were riding looked like the first
skateboards ever made. The wheels
were the biggest I had ever seen. I
joined about thirty kids skating in a
park beside an opera house. I asked
a kid in the park who spoke English
if there were any laws against skating
anywhere. He didn't know that laws.
like that existed and was surprised
that there is a problem for skaters in
America. A lot of towns in the U.S.A.
could learn from the Soviet Union
about how to treat skaters.

NOT NOBODY
This letter is to all the skaters who
aren't pro, or even sponsored. In your
September '87 issue there is an ad
with kids just like me. It was a Venture
Truck ad with four average kids. I
want all the kids who skate to know
that you're not a nobody, you're a
skater who likes to skate. Always
remember, you're not a nobody,
you're a skater. So just skate.
NO DEAL

As a dealer, I am concerned about
the effect of wall skating articles in
your magazine. Skateboards are now
banned in some cities due to the ugly
scars on building walls caused by
these wanna-bees. Who will you and
I sell magazines to when you pro-
mote all of us out of business?

Don't worry, the skaters will get tired
of wall bashing soon enough. Hey.

SENSITIVITY SKATES
My friend and I were skating in
Tamaqua, PA, at a beer distributor
that was cited for demolition. After a
half-hour or so of sessioning the four-
foot-plus acid drops and loading
ramp, a rag tag group of little kids-
gathered. Some of the kids had dept.
store boards, some had none. One
brave youth began asking questions,
"How do you learn, etc." I told him
to practice, read (Continued on page 15)
