Unlike many electronic bulletin boards,
Thrasher BBS (bulletin board system) is free and
open to anyone. Your only expense is the phone
charge. When you sign onto our bulletin board,
especially if you're calling long distance, you want
to use your time most efficiently. Here are a few
tips for getting through the electronic jumble with
fewer hang-ups:
First-time callers must know some things about
their computer before they call. Every machine
is slightly different and our bulletin board must
configure to your specifications through a series
of questions. Know your screen length (24 for
most) and width (40 or 80 columns), whether or
not you can display lower case letters, color or
IBM graphics, whether you need line-feeds, etc.
The more information you know before you call
the faster you'll be able to get through. If you
make a mistake configuring the system when you
first sign on, don't panic or slow down, changes
can be made from the main menu.

Make print-outs. Once you get through you'll
see a menu of one letter commands. Each of
these commands performs a specific function.
To save yourself time and long distance money,
make print-outs of each menu as you come to
it and refer to this. Help is available at all levels
of the bulletin board. Capture these help files and
study them while you're off the phone to get a
better understanding of the system.
Know where you want to go. The basic struc
ture of our bulletin board is like this: a main menu
through which from which you can perform a
number of functions (chat with system operator,
list board users, apply for a raise in security level
and more) or drop into other areas of the board.
These other areas include a voting booth, elec-
tronic mail (E-Mail) area, a bulletin section for
reading messages from everyone or writing your
own, a file section for uploading (sending) or
downloading (receiving) files and more. Both the
bulletin and file sections are broken up into sub-
boards. Once you drop into these sections you
may go to one of ten or so sub-boards. These
sub-boards include step-by-step, music, politics,
skate scenes, zines, freestyle skating, movie
reviews, jokes, and more. Once you get used to
reading and writing messages, be sure to check
out these additional sections.
Read on your own time, not your phone com-
pany's. As a long distance caller one thing you
can do to save time is to call once and capture
messages in a file and read them once you're
off the phone line. Call back later and respond
to the messages that inspire or offend you.
Don't waste time downloading files at long
distance rates. For the price of a twenty-minute
phone call you could probably buy a better pro-
gram or find one on a more local board. Most of
the files on the THRASHER board were taken
from other systems anyway. Check out the BBS
listings on our board. Look for a bulletin board
in your area code or close by. By calling these
boards you'll be able to get numbers to other local
boards, and with a little work you'll be able to
weed this list down to a few that are worth calling.
Post. That means leave messages. Even if you
don't have much to say, people will react to what
you write and then you'll have something to talk
bout. THRASHER BBS operates 24 hours a day
