The "Shelter from the Storm" encore jam with Kirk Hammett. Afterwards, Simon said, "I was hoping to work it into 'Sanitarium.
THE MISSION.
"From the minute I heard them, I realized
that they were highly melodic and dynamic,
with a lot of energy in their unique approach
to writing songs. I knew this band was
happening."
Is there any concept or idea you
give to her or do you leave it up to
her own creativity.
The only thing that I might do is to
give her a very, very broad idea to
work with. It would be wrong for me
to say, 'Here's a rough drawing, make
that look brilliant. That's not the way
good art comes about. She's got to
have her own say in doing the covers.
What do the members of the Mis-
sion do besides the band? Or is the
band a full-time job?
Yeah, it's fairly much like, if it all stop-
ped today, I don't know what I'd think,
I'd have a massive hurl in my life.
Simon: You're a truck driver.
Mick: Yeah, I might drive the trucks.
I've got other things that I think
Kirk Hammet/Metallica
about. I just bought a Harley-
Davidson. I've got that to polish.
Kirk: So what's the new album go-
ing to be like?
Mick: I don't know. I'm looking for-
ward to it, though. There are a lot of
ideas that should make it pretty good.
We've all got definite ideas how we
want to record it this time. It's still
coming together as the Mission
sound. I kind of got introduced to
Metallica with Master of Puppets and
then went backwards. We've got so
many copies of Master of Puppets,
we can't end up in our hotel room at
night without one. The progression
that developed is real good, but
Metallica developed itself, which is
what we want the Mission to do.
We're not going to sit there and say.
"We're going to be like this." I've just
gotten into Aerosmith, I really like
them. I think we're going to cover one
of their songs, "Dream On."
Kirk: Yeah, and you don't want to do
a "Cult," and do a big turn-around.
Mick: No, we don't really want to think
about that. I just want to let it do it
itself. Because we've got to live with
it and if it's contrived you kind of get
a sniff of that as well.
Kirk Yeah, it's bad enough living with
mistakes on the album, but when
your whole album turns out to be a
mistake...
got into them, they're a real good
band, the kind that I'd definitely want
in my record collection. They fulfill
a lot of requirements for what I like
in music and they're good people,
which is also important. We get on
with them real well. So we helped
them. It wasn't any hardship to
anyone, it was easy to do and Simon
and Wayne produced it. I like "Drug
in the Machine" and played on it,
cymbals and all.
And Sandy is doing artwork for
them too...
Yeah, that's right. Might as well. Our
system seems to be working, let them
Why all the different versions of get into that and let them develop. We
your songs?
Because we felt like it. If you've got
a seven and a twelve inch to make,
you feel like, wow, put the song on
the seven-inch and try to always
make the twelve-inch a bit selfish,
really. With "Wasteland" we made
a bit of a mistake.
What is the Mission's involvement
with All About Eve?
Julie Ann sang on the album. We saw
them at a gig we were playing. We
went down to this gig and I was
watching them. Wayne said, 'What
do you think about the girl singing?"
And everybody agreed. We kind of
don't impose any restrictions, say, oh,
right, you're with us and you have to
do it like this or anything. It seemed
right and they didn't feel railroaded,
they felt it was right for them, so...
What's in the future for the
Mission?
The future for the Mission...I don't
even know what we're doing tomor-
row, really. The future for the Mission,
let's see. I feel quietly confident.
Hopefully, whatever we fancy we'll
have the opportunity to do. The most
important thing is wanting to do it.
You know what I mean? Rather than
feeling that you should do it.
