AUSTRALIAN RULES
(Continued from page 64) blasted off into the unknown. Sydney was everything
the postcards and pictures said it would be. Big, urban skyline, bustling
boat harbor and that sculpture they call the Opera house stuck right in the
middle of it all.
We were fortunate to be staying in King's Cross, a sleazy corner of town
known for night crawling and a steamy club scene. We took full advantage,
courtesy of Matt Davis, our unnofficial tour guide on this leg.
11:00 pm-4:00 am
Skanking to a ska band, Losi, Christian, Gator, Matt, Simon and locals
went into the late hours. Sydney's scene seems very Londonesque.
Tuesday, April 22nd, Sydney 11:00 am
With a demo scheduled in downtown Sydney at 6 pm, most of us opted
for a leisurely day of sightseeing and light street skating. Losi scams a side
demo with the Coca Cola team at a local fair. Phillips laid low and ill in
the hotel room with a bad case of food poisoning. Roskopp shopped, Christ
and Gator slept. The Hill bros., along with Lee Ralph and Gregor drove
for a session at nearby Manley ramp where they met up with the surfing
Hawk bros., Lance and Steadham.
Later, I smashed a headlight on the rental car while caught in downtown
traffic flow, while Gonz, who had decided to get out and skate, ollied onto
the hood and generally tortured pedestrians who looked on as if they'd never
seen a skater in their entire lives (and may not have).
6:00 pm Martin Place, Downtown Sydney
A massive crowd overflowed onto the Hardcore/100% Mambo ramp that
had been trucked up from Melbourne for the occasion. Secreteries, execu-
tives, shopkeeps, tourists and media types mixed it up with the thousands
of skaters who had turned out. The scene had the potential for ugliness
but settled into a low roar when the skating began.
The roar of the crowd echoed and bounced off the hallways of downtown
buildings and dissipated somewhere out in the far alleys, alerting bums
and prostitutes to check out the madness. It reached a peak as Hawk and
Gator got side to side McTwists, Lance and Steadham doubled up on cross-
over airs, and Christian arched high above the sea of people. The ramp
was immediately engulfed by kids after the skating, to the horror of some
of the elder Australians who had never seen a full-fledged product toss before.
The kids kept themselves under control, as always, and as the crowd dispersed
the troupe of pros bid farewell to new-found friends.
Having barely touched the surface of the skate scene in Australia, and
having seen only a fraction of the massive country and no kangaroos, koala
bears, Hoodoo Gurus or didgereedoos, I realized a return trip was in order
to make up for such a short and busy stay. Hearty thanx must go out to
the Hardcore Hill bros., 100% Mambo, Surf Dive and Ski, Gail Austen's
Goodtimes, J.H. Distributing, Rip Curl, all the pros who skated hard, and
especially all the skaters, fans and the people of Australia who made it
work. G'night.
