If you don't already own a
snowboard then beg for, borrow or
buy one before you buy this tape,
because you're gonna want to hit the
slopes the minute you're through
watching it. The portrayal of "snow
surfing" on this tape will blow your
mind. There is no need to convince
anyone who's already in tune that
snowboarding is here to stay; in fact,
most of the radical action sequences
in this video make regular downhill
skiing look dry by comparison. That
the Sims team dominates this video
can't be considered a drawback;
Terry Kidwell, Shaun Palmer, Keith
Kimmel, Alan Armbruster and Dave
Weaver are all among the world's
best. And let's not forget "the
acknowledged inventor of the sport"
as narrator Clyde Beatty Jr. points
out, Tom Sims (Quiz: Who remem-
bers a barefoot Sims weilding a 40"
skate to multiple freestyle victories in
the mid-seventies?). To put it in short
bursts, this video gives you-tons o'
powder, heli-boarding and hella
aerials, massive roosters, steep and
deep terrain, snappy 2-pipe action.
Breckenridge World Championships
and excellent camera angles
(including helmet mounted) under
bright mid-day conditions. Kidwell's
aerial show alone is worth the price
and one single move, a carving cor-
nice edge drifter to aerial, by Keith
Kimmer (I think) is so unruly you'll
be waxing your P-tex in anticipation.
So what can we criticize about this
video? Ah yes, the amateurish and
cornball narration segments. For
some reason most action videos of
this nature suffer from bad narrative
that seems thrown together in half a
day and then blaringly overdubbed
into the soundtrack at the last minute.
A few attempts at comic relief are bet
ter used for bladder relief. Clyde does
get off a few good quotes, though,
like "This may be Squaw Valley but
Sims makes it look like third reef
Pipeline." Get this video and like Tom
says, "You guys gotta go boardin'
this winter, or next, as the case may

This culmination of surfer/skater
Tony Roberts' 8mm footage transfer-
red to video has long been a party.
classic in and around TR's home port
of Santa Cruz, CA. This video
represents many years and many
reels of film all shot and edited in
classic "home movie" style by TR
himself. The choppy, gritty nature of
this tape, complete with scratches
and splice marks, lends itself nicely
to the content, a mixture of wacked
out and seriously sick performances
by a wide ranging cast of characters.
The surf footage is centered on the
Santa Cruz area, where you don't
have to look too hard to find the best
of the modern surf crop ripping hard
lines. We're talkin' about some of the
best aerial footage available
anywhere. TR cuts from long cliff
shots to in the tube angles that are
descriptive and closely cropped for
maximum effect. A lot of these sos-
sions have that "classic day and we
were just lucky to have a camera on
hand" feel. Facials, parties,
sacrificial board burnings-it's all
here.
Skatewise, you get pretty much the
same approach, and everything is
mixed up so that it never gets bor-
ing. Again, the action is centered
around the Nor-cal scene, which
means an able crew, including the
likes of Roskopp, Keith Meek, Ricky
Winsor and many more. Rare footage
from the Go Skate Sacto vert contest
featuring Cab and Hosoi is included.
On the whole, this is not the best
skate footage on tape, but a fresh and
soulful presentation makes it highly
viewable. Extras like footage of
"Butch" dirtboarding and a sand-
boarding run will have you doing
couch loops as you watch this vid
