COMMENTARY
THE DOCTOR
Check this out. Every month at least
two-thirds of the letters I get fall into four
predictable catagories. I've broken them
up percentage-wise: at least twenty-five
percent are about ramps. The writers ask
how to build a ramp, tell me their parents
won't allow a ramp, say they can't get a
ramp, can't find a ramp, or that there isn't
a ramp.
Parents are a big one. There's always
someone whining about their parents or
about not being able to skate because of
them. Or the parents write to complain
about the kid skating night-and-day, day-
and-night. So I'll have to give parent-
oriented letters about nineteen percent.
Broken boards or equipment failure in
general are next. I get so many letters on
this subject every month. "My board
broke," "my truck broke," "my wheels
don't roll, etc. Fifteen percent.
And here's one that's gaining popu-
larity. Cops at shopping malls, rent-a-
cops, or just police in general. C'mon,
how hard can it be? You skate, you get
busted, you don't skate there anymore.
Seems easy enough, right? Wrong.
About seven-and-a-half percent of the
letters pertain to cops. The remaining
33.5 percent are really interesting,
humorous or just plain imaginative.
That's what I like! So, if you're about to
write a letter that falls under one of the
aforementioned categories, please think
twice about sending it in, OK?
SMALL AND DEADLY
I have two questions. The first one is from
my friend Chris. He wants to know if anyone
has died from a hard slam. I was wonder-
ing if there is, or ever has been, a midget
skater? I don't mean small little kids, I'm

talking about people that are 3-feet tall when
they're like 18 years old. That's it for now.

Yes, on both counts. I knew a guy who
died from going downhill late at night
with no helmet, and from what I hear he
was heavily intoxicated. That's a trick you
might want to stay away from. I still do
know a skater who is a midget and I'll
have you know he is not a bad skater and
he's an alright guy. Thanks for the letter.
SPOON FED
As my friend and I were looking through
the new Thrasher we noticed that some of
the new Powell decks (Hawk and McGill)
and the Lester and Eddie Reategui decks
are cut in near the front wheel well, form-
ing a broad half-circle nose. Is there any-
thing special about this shape that makes
it so popular? Also, we noticed the spoon
noses are getting more popular. I like them,
but what exactly are their advantages?

The spoon nose evolved from concave
decks. Concave decks evolved from a
need to keep your feet on the board. With
the edges of the board higher than the
center they tend to do just that. For me,
having ridden a concave board for a long
time, if I ride a board with no concave or
a spoon nose, it feels like it's almost bent
back the other way-or convex, if you
will. Spoon noses are just another in-
genious way of giving your foot a little
more to grab, thus making it easier to
control your board. As for the nose.
design on those new models, hey, one
week it's notched noses, the next it's
built-in rails. You know what I mean? I
think you do.
SPACED OUT
Um yeah. Do those little spacers in bet-
ween the bearings on the wheels really
help? Most of the skaters I know discard
them. Oh, yeah, my 85A wheels are only
about four months old and I was doing an
ollie in the ditch and when I landed one of
my wheels ripped off the truck leaving only
the bearings and the core on the axle. Has
this happened to you? Is it cheap wheels
or wear and tear? They also coned big time
prior to this.
Troy White
Abilene, TX
Ha! I don't believe this! This is hilar-
ious. You say you don't use the spacer
between the bearings and yet you have
a problem with them ripping right out of
the wheel? Tell you what, why don't you
buy some new wheels, only this time, just
to be crazy, leave the spacer between the
bearings. Gee, I wonder what will hap-
pen? Probably nothing, because what
that little spacer does is give your bear-
ings a solid, even seat so when your
tighten your axle nut the bearings don't
squish against the inner core of the
wheel and cause the wheel to violently
disengage from its original axis of
rotation.
GIVE A DOG A NOSE BONE
I've got a solution to the question of what
to do with those coned wheels, ground
copers, shredded rails, ripped tail skids, etc.
Give them to your dog. They won't be clut-
tering up your closet, and your dog will
appreciate it. (It'll also give him something
to do besides bark!) And after he's done.
chawing they'll be in tiny shreds that will rot.
into the dirt for the worms. This brings up
one problem. Sometimes your dog won't be
able to differentiate between coned wheels
and good wheels, and you might just have
to fight your dog for your board.

There's a boneless trick that actually
makes sense. Now send me your address
so I can send you a t-shirt for letter-of-
