ASK
BUMVILLE, USA
THE FOR
with Rick Blackhart
Freaky and styley. Christian Hosoi makes fun out of a flatland situation.
My problem is that I live mega miles from
the ditch scene and even farther from the
ramp. I ask for rides from my brothers and
parents and they fully bum on me. So you'll
usually see me hoofing it on rough asphalt
and by the time I get to my destination, I'm
completely bombed out. Should I stick with
it and wait two years until I get a car or keep
bumming rides off my family and being
pissed on?
Kitty Litter

PS. I live in Boonieville-no close buses and
no money in my pocket.
Hey, I'm crying over here. Do you think
that I had it any easier? Or any other
skaters for that matter? Not everything
comes easy. Especially skating. No one's
forcing you to skate. You want to skate,
fine. Stick it out. Bum that ride, skate that
mile or ten. Do whatever you have to. I'm
sure you probably would, anyway.
ANKLE BITE
I'm sure this has happened to you
sometime: You bail from an ollie or a rock
'n roll or some other no-handed thingy. You
should knee-slide but you run out of it in-
stead, and the board comes rolling down
and smacks you in the ankle. It hurts then,
but later it gets worse and by the end of the
day you're limping around bad. I don't even
wanna talk about gettin' hit twice in the
same day. My question is, what can I do to
my stinging ankle immediately and/or later
that will get me back on my board as soon
as possible.

Ice! As soon as you can, get some ice
on that baby. Any kind of bruise or strain
or twist is most effectively relieved by ice.
As far as skating again the same day-if
you really smacked it good, your best bet
is to stay off it at least a day or two.
RENT-A-SPOT
My friends and I often go into Washing-
ton, DC, to skate because of the great street
spots there. Many of these spots, however,
are found in the centers of building com-
plexes, and within minutes of stepping on
our boards the building rent-a-cops run up
and kick us out. A couple of weeks ago we
were kicked out of three places in fifteen
minutes. So what I want to know is, if I flip
these guys off or keep skating, what can
they do? Can they hit us with their rent-a-
clubs or press charges or take my skate (try
to) or what?
I wouldn't advise provoking a cop or
rent-a-cop because most likely you'll
come out on the long end of his stick.
Your best bet is to try and avoid these
spots. Once in awhile it's cool, but the
more you skate it, the greater chance
there is of getting busted. Even if it's just
a rent-a-cop, why cause a scene that will
blow it for other skaters? You might not
get busted, but the next guy probably
will. If you have to skate a particular spot,
try and pick the best, or better, time of
day. Usually at night with a light is right.
If and when the authorities show up and
you get caught, be cool, answer ques-
tions, explain you're just harmless skat-
ers, and maybe they'll let you split. The
main idea is to not get caught. Consider
yourself informed.
WHAT WILL YOU DO?
A couple of days ago I bought a brand
new deck. When I got home and put the
trucks and rails on, I noticed a slight crack
along the edge of the board where there
was no glue. Is this a problem? Should I try
to fix it or try to get my money back?
Tom Stewart, Jr.

Well, I'll tell ya. There's really not much
you can do. Once in awhile you will get
an air bubble in the glue at the edge of
a board. Your best bet is to go ahead and
try to fix it with epoxy, Elmers, whatever.
Pry the plies open a little more, drip a few
drops in there and clamp. If this doesn't
work, just ride it until it breaks and then
get a new board. The key here is check-
ing the product before you buy. Now that
you've put rails on the board you might
have trouble getting a refund. Just skate
or bust.
CAN'T GET IT UP
I have a problem. I have a G & S Jim Gray
and it's about 25 inches long. Every time
I try to ollie, it comes out unsuccessful.
Should I hit my tail when ollieing or should
I not hit the tail and get a new board? Can
you help me please!

If you're just learning to do an ollie, hit
the tail, then lift your front foot up and
forward. Although this is easier said than
done, it's what you have to do. As you get
better, hitting the tail is not always neces-
sary but still a nice way of defining the
trick. Perhaps your board (Jim Gray
models are not 25" long; it sounds like
you broke the tail off or something) has
something to do with your ollie learning
disability. You'll just have to experiment
and practice.
