Being of sound mind (and inten-
ding to stay that way), I've decided
to wander off the beaten path of gore-
infested films this month and give my
brain a break. Instead, I compiled a
list of films that I feel are worthy of
notice. You may want to bring this list
with you on your next trip to Video
Rama. Grab a scratch pad because
here we go..
Rebel Without a Cause - The classic
tale of a tormented teenager fighting
the middle-class values of his par
ents while struggling to find a mean-
ing to life on his own. Stars the
immortal James Dean with Natalie
Wood and Sal Mineo.
Repo Man Simple story about a
punk kid turned car repossessor, with
a slight, other-worldly twist. Stars
Emilio Estevez (and was produced by
The Monkee's Michael Nesmith). A
cult film if there ever was one.
Scarface Perhaps one of thei
bloodiest gangster films ever made
A Cuban refugee climbs to cocaine
king in three easy steps: get a job,
kill the boss, swear a lot. May not be
suitable for young audiences (or
weak stomachs or sensitive ears).
Stars Al Pacino. Directed by Brian
DePalma.
Blazing Saddles The undisputed
champ of comic westerns. There are
so many classic scenes in this it'll
make your head spin. A breed of
comedy rarely seen. Directed by Mel
Brooks
A Clockwork Orange A stylized
futuristic tale about a very bad lad.
his gang of hoodlums, his reform
brainwashing, and the hard society
he lives in. Not an action adventure,
but rather a mind twister. Stars
Malcom McDowell. Directed by
Stanley Kubrick.
The Exorcist The ultimate horror
film. A child is possessed by the
devil, and only one man can cleanse
her soul. Stars Linda Blair as the girl
we all want to bring home to Ma.
The Godfather A brilliant epic
drama revolving around a great Mafia
family. Incredible character develop
ment, great plot turns and intensely
gripping scenes. One of the finest
films ever made, starring a cast of
masters: Marlon Brando, Al Pacino,
James Caan and Robert Duvall.
It Happened One Night An
unemployed reporter aids a helpless
millionaire's daughter to run away.
and, eventually to discover what life
is all about. A true classic in every
sense of the word. I watched this out
of curiosity, and it drew me in like a
store with free donuts. Stars Clark
Gable. Directed by Frank Capra
Ordinary People An intriguing
drama about a teen-age boy who has
witnessed his brother's death and
has a difficult time facing his parents
and understanding himself. An ex-
tremely intelligent and absorbing
film, not soon forgotten. Like "Rebel
Without a Cause, it exemplifies the
distress of the American teen-ager.
Timothy Hutton, directed by Robert
Highly recommended. Starring
Redford.
The Shining King of the "lunatic
with an axe" films. This stylish
adventure into the macabre is one of
the few films that ever scared me.
Elevators filled with blood, beautiful
women turning into hags, dead
children saying, "Come play with
us forever"It's enough to make
you think twice about checking into
the Holiday Inn. A hotel of horrors.
Stars the fun-loving Jack Nicholson.
Directed by Stanley Kubrick
Little Big Man A twisted episodic
western about the sole survivor of
Custer's last stand. Dustin Hoffman
stars as the white boy raised by In-
dians and then drawn into other
"stages" of life, including gunfighter,
religious man, and a great deal more.

the story of a man dragged through
life by his hair.
very funny and often ironic film, it's
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance
Kid-Probably the best western ever
made. Paul Newman and Robert
Redford star as the outlaws girls tend
to die over. Action-packed, funny, wit-
ty, and above all, involving. If you've
never seen a decent western, give
this one a try.
Thief A suspense-filled action
drama about a safe cracker after the
American dream. A visually spellbin-
ding film woven with such grace that
you can't help but be caught up.
James Caan stars as the mysterious
criminal with incredible style.
Directed by Michael (Miami Vice)
Mann.
