PRODUCT
1986 marked the unveiling of a new
Powell concave. Previous Powell/
Peralta decks were excellent but lack-
ed the deep dish concave that has
become the mainstream in the board
market these days.
The "new" Tony Hawk model is
quite different from the "old" Hawk
in a number of ways. The first and
most noticeable is the rocker design.
If you set this deck on a flat table, it
rocks back and forth from the tail to
the nose. The measurements are as
follows: 30% long, 10%4" wide, 6%"
tail, 1514" wheel base and more nose
(414") than any other on the market.
With a cutaway nose shape and cut-
away hips, no concave tail and no
wheel wells, this is a board to keep
up with the times. Check it out.
Another new deck is the Fast Ed
die model from Santa Monica Air-
lines. A shallow concave and an
altogether smaller shape than the
average Pro-vert model makes this
board better suited for street use. It
has only front wheel wells and a cut-
away tail area so you can crank the
sharp turns without worrying too

much about wheel bite. The stats:
29½" long, 10" wide, 6" tail, 15½"
wheel base and just over 2½" nose.
The stats are unusual but street.
boards tend to have longer wheel
bases and shorter noses for some

Z-Products has to be one of the
oldest names in the industry. Does
anyone still remember the old Zephyr
rockers that were made of straight
fiberglass with "grip tape" built into
the board? These guys are experi-
menting, and that is skating's life
blood, whether it is Z-Roller Trucks
or this new George Wilson designed
Knucklehead blank with 27 (1
counted) notches or "knuckles" all
around the nose. Not much on the
concave side, but a quality piece of
7 ply maple. The facts: 29" long, 10"
wide, 5.95" tail, 1514" wheel base,
24" nose. The design is your basic
fish with a flat tail. Solid looking and
feeling for all skaters, old and new.
You won't want to buy a Z board just
for nostalgic purposes. Check it out.

Last and certainly not least, here's
my complete board of the month. A
mini Bullet with Indy Stage V's (159's)
and Steadham X-Rays. This board is
excellent for today's smaller skaters.
It has a good shape, nice concave
and one of the best scoop noses on
the market. The dimensions are
30% length, 9" wide, 6%" tail,
15% wheel base, 3%" nose. No
wheel wells, no concave tail and a
unique double cutaway shape. The
rounded edges are sometimes hard
to put grip tape on, but they do keep
the board from splitting along the

The trucks are Indy V's, and from
what I can see and feel, this time they
got it right. They feel a little heavier
and they look like Thunders from the
back with more of a "V" pattern than
the Stage II's and IV's, and you can
see the axles behind the hanger. In-

The rollers on this board are
Steadham X-Ray 97s. You might
think that a 97 durometer would be
too hard, but these wheels are soft.
both feeling and riding. The shape is
excellent with symmetrical, bevelled
edges inside and out. The X-Rays are
a little bit bigger than the 60mm
diameter that is pretty much standard
in wheel circles. Also, they don't chip
easily and have good sliding proper-
ties once they are broken in. This is
a great ramp wheel and not so loud
that your mom will yell at you to be
