EGG HUNT
XNO
We All Fall Down/Me And You
Dischord, 7"
Featuring ex-Minor Threatsters lan
MacKaye on vocals, guitar and bass
with drummer Nelson in a one-off
studio project, this single stands as
both a reflection of times past and an
indication of sounds to come. "We All
Fall Down" is more direct, lamenting
a not long forgotten glory while try-
ing to exist in the present with a
sense of decency and accomplish-
ment. Reminiscent of his work with
his previous outfit, Embrace,
MacKaye's vocals drip with honesty,
sincerity and desperation. The same
feeling permeates "Me and You," a
virtual instrumental. Psychedelia-
drenched guitar work empowers and
MacKaye's occasional change of
tone punctuates this tune. Egg Hunt
works as a representation of two in-
dividuals not content to dwell in the
past, but determined to move forward
and develop the scream of honesty
and maturity. MG
BROKEN
BROKEN BONES
Never Say Die
Combat Core
Heavy, speedy guitar with whining
leads blares at you from this new,
three-song, Broken Bones 12". It's a
wall of loud, powerful, speed punk
with a touch of metallic licks. Now that
Tez (Bones' twin brother in the
original Discharge line-up) has join
ed the band, the early Discharge in-
fluence is more evident. For those of
you who are unsatisfied with the new
Discharge, take a listen to Broken
Bones. It's what you're looking for.

THROWING MUSES
Throwing Muses
4AD
4AD keep putting out great
releases and Throwing Muses is no
exception. What we have here is a
full, melodic, non-distorted sound
forefronted by female vocals. As a
whole it reminds me a bit of X-Mal
Deutshland, or All About Eve minus
distortion. The music is clever with
biting twists scattered throughout.
The lyrics are either very personal or
very demented-I can't make heads
from tails. It's present, yet mysterious,
restrained, yet explosive. It's great to
know that something of this caliber
comes from the good old U.S. of A.

MOVING TARGETS
Burning In Water
Taang!
Moving Targets are the voice of
lost innocence. Superficially striking
the ear like a weepy-eyed Husker Du.
this Boston based trio doesn't merely
toll the bell of adulthood; they run
headlong into it. Life is experienced.
knowledge is gained and, as vocalist/
guitarist Kenny Chambers intones,
one can never go back to a long
forgotten innocence. Chamber's
guitar soars with tuneful exhilaration
as drummer Pat Brady and bassist
Pat Leonard keep the rhythms
precise, hard-hitting and maniacally
on-key. Cuts like "The Other Side
and "Always Calling" keep the pro-
ceedings direct and up-front emo-
tionally while "Less Than Gravity"
and "Coming Home" ring with a
solemn, heartbroken tone. The
Targets sum up the best elements of
Husker Du. Soul Asylum and Rites Of
Spring and offer a lot more. MG
THE PROLETARIAT
Indifference
Homestead, Lp
The now defunct Proletariat were
one of the few no-nonsense politico
punk outfits to deliver an uncom-
promisingly critical message without
blind sloganeering and a slew of un-
necessary trappings. Heavily in-
fluenced by the likes of Wire Train
and Killing Joke, the Proles strike
with a bullet-like fury that's em-
powered by driving, feedback-
drenched guitars, razor sharp
rhythms and the piercing vocals of
Rick Brown. On "Homeland" and
"Guns," two cuts recorded with
female vocalist Laurel Bowman, the
band takes a rather uncharacteristic
turn, honing the rabbit punch in a
melodic though just as effective man-
ner strangely reminiscent of Rush on
a more soulful tangent. Man, do I
miss these guys. MG
BAD BRAINS
1 Against I
SST, Lp
With their first vinyl outing in over
three years, hardcore progenitors
Bad Brains unite sheer musical
capability with their trademark.
unrelenting power, kicked into over-
drive by a definite sense of commit-
ment and spirituality. Gone are the
days of hotshit thrash (though the
best put to vinyl), as tempos have
slowed down and made room for
more melodies, which has led to an
overall redefinition of the band's bar-
rage into a more potent whole. The
band shows tremendous versatility
with brooding, drum-heavy numbers
("Sacred Love"), lighter, reggae spic-
ed numbers ("Hired Gun") and
outright powerthrasher ("House Of
Suffering"). HR's vocals are a lot
more intelligible this time around as
noted producer Ron St. Germain
brings out a slicker, though no less
gut squeezing, malestrom. Guitars
An Official Anthology of "Live" rage like lightning as tribal drums
thunder.. Chant down Babylon! MG
CHRISTIAN DEATH
Bootlegs
Nostradamus Records
This is a compilation of mixing
board and hand-held crowd recor-
dings previously released as
bootlegs. Christian Death has com-
plied what they consider the best of
these recordings and have legally
released them in hopes of putting an
end to large profiting by bootleggers.
The result is what could easily be
called the best of Christian Death.
The sound quality lacks a bit, but this
is to be expected of bootleg recor-
dings. Live excerpts range from Los
Angeles '81 to Amsterdam '84 to Lon-
don '86 and more. Some of the songs
included here are "When I Was
Bed," "This Glass House," "The
Drowning," "Theatre of Pain" and
some unreleased and untitled
pieces. If you've never seen or heard
them live, perhaps this is for you. PB
GOD'S FAVORITE DOG
Various Artists
Touch and Go Records
Here's what you get for the price
of one album: six bands that play the
coarsest noise this side of the grave.
Butthole Surfers, Killdozer, Scratch
Acid, Hose, Happy Flowers and Big
Black. Take a listen to Killdozer's ren-
dition of Lynyrd Skynyrd's classic.
"Sweet Home Alabama." It's hard to
say which is better. The two numbers
by the Butthole Surfers are more
evidence to the fact that they're tip-
ping farther and farther over the
edge. What brings these bands.
together is a sound style that's
somewhere in the league of the
dramatically surreal. Don't play this
record around anybody under the in-
fluence of a hallucinogen. They'll
probably become terminal. DP
BLAH BLAH BLAH
Iggy Pop
A & M Records
Iggy Pop, the Godfather of Punk
Rock, has given us an album we can
all live with. The strength of the
album is in the "Rock of the 80's,"
uptempo numbers, featuring hard
rock guitar wailing by Steve Jones
(ex-Sex Pistols), and Iggy's haunting
string arrangements. The more
powerful songs are the rocking "Cry
For Love" with its sing-along chorus,
the playful "Blah Blah Blah," reminis
cent of the "Party" album era and the
wild, wild "Winners and Losers."
The David Bowie and David
Richards production is too slick with
an overabundance of synthesizers
and drum machines. Iggy's voice
sometimes sounds like David
Bowie's, but I guess maybe David
Bowie's voice might sound a little like
Iggy's, too.
Aside from the mediocre, semi-
interesting few songs the album con-
tains, as a whole it is a worthwhile in-
vestment. Iggy's overall approach
has dulled, but I guess that is the
tradeoff for seeing him on MTV. Iggy
Pop is one of those performers you
want to see live anyway. RSIII
