TRASH
ROAD & TRACKER
Our latest installment involving the big
boys and their toys once again finds
stalwart skatarian and industrialist Larry
Balma, holding pole position. Our reliable
man in the pits reports that 'ol Tracker
Larry and cohort, former race driving
champ and Larry's mechanic, Frank
Fahey have been road testing their latest
hobby, a 633 alcohol-fed turbo BMW on the
highways and biways of San Diego coun-
ty. It seems blowing away from Turbo Car-
reras at 165 MPH and outlaw grudge mat-
ches with the notorious Carradine bros. on
Mulholland drive might become routine for
this driving duo. The editors of Road and
Track magazine have allegedly been trying
to get Fast Frank and Lightning Larry out
for pink slips in their "other car," an as-yet
uncorked M1 factory Beemer.
METALLICA
The horror, the horror, master guitarist
from Metallica, James Hetfield broke his
wrist while skating "downhill" somewhere
in the Midwest. Ouch! As reported on MTV's
music news, where they showed a picture
of James and Kirk in Pushead's bathtub
(photo by Pus), stating the facts and plug-
ging their new model. If you want to know
more call Zorlac-Newtron has it on VCR
five times.
VIDEOKNOWN
Mum is the general word surrounding the
whereabouts of filming site for the new
Powell/Peralta video epic, now in produc-
tion on and around southern California. The
veil of secrecy is so thick that it can only
allow our staff a few simple questions,
resulting in some very vague answers:
1. Have not humble ramp-carpenters-to-the-
stars, Tommy Kaye and Timmy Payne
been commissioned to construct a godly
ramp structure costing multi-quadruple
figures for the initial wood footage?
2. Could this structure be located
somewhere South of the Orange County
line, North of San Diego, East of the Pacific
and West of Death Valley?
3. If that's too vague to comprehend, is it
true that maps to the ultra-secret site are
being bootlegged at twenty bucks a pop?
4. Are reported sightings of illegal aliens
and helicopter fly-overs by the border patrol
so common as to jeopardize the delicate
ambience needed for such a video shoot?
5. Why has director Stacy Peralta been
unavailable for comment during our
repeated calls to his Hollywood digs?
6. Why are North County physicians and en-
tomologists baffled by video crew members
complaining of strange allergic symptoms
and a rare breed of ground snail lurking on
the set? Could the two phenomena be
related in some strange way?
Unfair, the street ramp paradise, grew out of the
rubble of last year's World's Fair in Knoxville, TN.
7. Were not lead actors/skaters McGill,
Hawk, Mountain, Caballero and Guerrero
seen in an off-set cabaret running up a 250
dollar tab in strawberry daquiries alone
while Marine beefcakes in bun-hugging at-
tire paraded on stage in an all male strip
revue?
8. Did Lance claim it was his sweet 17th
birthday just to score a free birthday pastry
(or was it pastie)?
9. Is not Santa Cruzian Rick "Spidey"
Demontrond scheming to steal the ramp
for relocation in his El Cajon backyard?
10. Could our spies be correct in assuming
that it was visionary Brad Dorfman who tip-
ped off local authorities as to the
whereabouts of the top secret site?
11. Moving on to even greener pastures,
have the PPV producers paid off an LA
motel owner to keep quiet about the use of
his grounds, rooms, coffee shop and large
sized fish shaped pool for the shooting?
12. Did not this pool plan come about after
plans for custom-built, exclusive in-ground
skate pool with a price tag of 35K were
scrapped?
13. With so much moola changing hands,
could not Dorfman's Unreel Productions,
reportedly now worth close to a 2 mil. (not
to mention the tab for camera ace Don
Hoffman's services), be far behind in pro-
duction of their own epic?
IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY, YOU WILL,
DEPARTMENT.
Speaking of epics in the making.
Thrashin', "The Movie" debuts in 300
theatres nationwide, somewhere around
Aug. 29. Early rushes from critics say it's
better than Skateboard, a 1978 B flick star-
ring Tony Alva, but not on a par with Valley
Girl.
By the time you read this the Transworld?
Skateboard Championships at the Expo
World's Fair will be history. Stay tuned for
more coverage because the hot ticket for
this one just may turn out to be the slalom
event. Reportedly, Henry Hester has been
on the phone daily with kingpin Dick Novak
regarding a rumored "run for the money"
with friendly rival Bob Skoldberg.
Backwords talk has it that a few misplaced
sets of original Independent Suspension
Trucks might have re-surfaced for this one.
John Hutson couldn't be reached for com-
ment at press time.
LIGHT WEIGHT DEPARTMENT
The R&D division of G & S Skateboards
unveiled their super-light deck at a fashion
show in the Marriott hotel at La Jolla Village
in Diego. Able am freestyle ace, Fabian
Kravitz worked out on a felt surface
amongst the indoor chrome and glass sur-
roundings. Rumored appearances by Billy
Ruff, off crutches, a still single Miss O.P.
and other skate and surf celebs.
Could Powell pro's, Caballero and Guer-
rero, seen walking around with duffles full
of Nike Air Jordan tennies, hint at a major
sponsorship coup? We don't know.
Man from Kryptonics, the Boulder, CO
based Tom Peterson has been said to
posess a bag of wheels so superior in for-
mula and shape that they may blow
anything else on the market away.
OBITUARY
We regret to report that skate friend and
slalom/pool pioneer, Bobby Piercy, met an
untimely death resulting from a freak acci-
dent while vacationing on the Colorado
River.
SHORT SHOTS
Tod Swank, Mike McGill and L.A.
Raider-X Lyle Alzado reportedly seen
trading Polaroid snap shots on an intercon-
tinental jet flight.
Skate and Create, named "worst sports
song of the year" by Bob Uecker on TV.
The Jay Smith, racing "fast" Yamaha
road bikes, is said to have found a downhill
into Palm Springs, CA where one can reach
40 MPH+ for 20 minutes on a skate.
FILMAGE
John Malvino has been looking for the
Princess of Bora Bora and has no time to
talk about the French government money
he may have seen to make a surf film or the
Nike commercials he's been shooting in:
Oakland, CA.
Film icons, Hal Jepson and Warren
Miller, may be talking about a joint effort
to produce a triple S feature (Surf, Skate
and Ski).
RULES RULE
The Action Sports Retailer show in Long
Beach, CA has vowed to keep out all
skaters this fall. No skating, no pros, just
sales. Spidey has vowed to penetrate. For
a good read check out the multi-page rule
book for the World Expo competition/demo
in Vancouver, B.C. It rivals the popular
Meese Report on pornography.
SUMMER IN THE CITY
On a hot June 1st day in NYC amongst
kids selling lemonade and the ever-present
urban H-dog and pretzel men, 100+
skaters gather for the First Brooklyn Bridge
contest on the banks of the Hudson,
organized by Aggrosports Services. No
sooner had the preliminary freestyle and
360° events begun and the slalom cones
placed down that a beef develops with
some B-ball dribbling locals who are cruis-
ing through their turf. Four dudes vs. one
hundred skaters until the round ballers pull
two guns. (Only in New York, right?) Skaters
scatter but somehow better sense prevails.
No shots are fired-everything's cool. Sum-
mertime in NYC. Skaters who won: Joe
Jameres (freestyle and 360's), Papo
Capiello (slalom), Sam Siegler (street 15
& under) and John Soto (street 16 & over).
The Madrid tour flashed through E. Coast
in a whirlwind, leaving tears and cheers in
its stormy wake. With a hateful snarl of, "If
they want trash, I'll give them some trash,"
Bill Danforth, surpassed new thresholds of
pain with the rental-car-lighter-pressed-into-
the-forearm trick, then swabbed the blister-
ing wound with a pinch of salt.
An unrelated incident had BK, Joe
Bowers and Mike Smith on a live Maine
lobster binge in New England. Mike Smith
found himself overwhelmed by a shell-clad
crustacean and had to elicit the help of the
restaurant crew to dissect his meal. Tales
of live worms in salads were also common.
Further notes from the Madrid Mansion tour
had the crew uncovering a scoop at the site
of last year's World's Fair in Knoxville, Ten-
nessee. Out of the rubble has risen the
Unfair-Batmite and the boy's version of
a street ramp paradise, utilizing the leftover
plywood scrap. Over a dozen ramps in all
and some down home sessioning to boot.
J.F.A. rider Tim Miles who took first place
in Las Vegas Olympian ramp contest, went
directly to jail without passing go:
something about a stolen car, something
else about breaking probation, somewhere
around six years. Although said skater is
also rumored guilty of outstanding debts to
JFA captain(?) Brian Brannon, he is
reported still in healthy standing as a team
member.
JODY, WHERE ARE YOU?
Look for the JFA tour bus in your 'burg,
'cause by the time you read this, Jody
Foster's Army may have already been in
town, on tour behind their latest platter of
instrumentals titled "Shut Up." The tail end
of the cross-country trek includes Pro-
vidence, RI on Aug 31, followed by Montreal
9/2, Toronto 9/3, Detroit 9/4, Green Bay,
Wis. 9/5 and Minneapolis by September
6th.
SEARCH AT YOUR OWN RISK
On another sad note, this coming from
Alan Chilton regarding the Glory Hole in
northern California, latest rumor has it that
a skater, trying to climb down the steep rock
cliff into that infamous pipe heaven, slipped
I and fell to his death while his friends
witnessed in horror. Chalk up another ex-
perience and cross another spot off your
list. Skaters: please be careful out there.
JUSTICE BEWARE
Dateline: Sunday 4:25 p.m.-Honolulu,
Hawaii. Channel 6 KITV, public service
message from the Criminal Justice Dept.
"If you see a suspicious person like this,
don't hesitate to call police." Accompany-
ing photo of skater-type wearing
THRASHER t-shirt. Apparently the word
"outlaw" is still alive and well when it comes
to skaters vs. John Q. Public, reports our
travelling eye, Bruno Peters. By the way.
that Bruno gets around, doesn't he? Girls
bewarel
CHALLENGAIRS
The good people from Lapper 'zine out!
in Richmond, VA have decided to stir up the
ozone layer regarding some recent
developments out at the extraordinary
Cedar Crest Country Club ramp. It seems
that while on a recent visit to the back
woods structure, Tony Magnussen was
blasting some pretty convincing backside
airs in the 10-11 height range. The
challenge: Bring on Christ, Lester, Cab or
anyone who feels they're man enough to
beat 11 feet. A cash prize will be awarded
on January 1st, 1987 to the record holder,
to be determined at the CCCC ramp with
Lapper staffers, cameras in hand. In-
terested sponsors who want to sweeten the
pot are urged to contact Lapper, P.O. Box
6777, Falls Church, VA 22046.
QUOTABLE
"Let's all cooperate."
"It was sick."
Frank Hawk, again
Bryce Kanights
"Can I have the chicken teriyaki?"
