MALL DOGS
with Rick Blackhart
The mall patrol bitches at us skaters if
we're riding in the parking lot or sidewalks.
They say either take the skateboards home
or they will take them. Well, they can kiss
this skater's ass before they take my board.
I already told my parents if mall security
tries to take it they'll have it bashed upside
their head, or, I'll thrash on their patrol
trucks. But I will let you decide what I should
do. What should I do?

You damn near already answered your
own question. You know what the risks
are so either skate the mall and pay the
price (handcuffs?, jail?, a bullet?) or
shine those jerks and find a good place
to ride.
GO WITH THE FLOW
We have a nice ditch to skate down here.
I can get pretty high on the walls, but these
other guys there can stay up on the banks
as high as they want for almost as long as
they want. I have asked them how they do
it, but the best answer I get is 'pump it hard
on the transitions." I try but never seem to
get it as high as I want. I was hoping you
could help explain this "pumping" action. I
have thought that it may be my board, it is
relatively new and the bearings are kind of
stiff. I am riding 85As, they might be absorb-
ing all my momentum, because the transi
tions are hard. But I think the fault lies in
my riding. I seem to be getting higher, but
these guys can grind the top of the wall
and they don't even appear to be straining
Thanks for your help..

It has nothing to do with your board.
at least, not much anyway. Technique is
the name of the game and there is one
common technique involved in skating
you should know about. It's called
weight and unweight. Until you learn
this, skating anything will be much harder.
Some people don't even know when or
if they've got it. That just determines a
good skater from a better skater. Now
trying to teach someone this technique
is very difficult. It's something you kinda
learn for yourself after many hours on
your stick. Go back and watch these
guys. It's almost like literally jumping
up the wall and letting your board go
with the flow. I'm sure you'll get it after
awhile. A few decades maybe, but you'll
get it.
DITCH BITCH
I have this major problem with the way
our city (Tucson) works. A couple of friends
of mine found this really aggro ditch to
skate. We quickly got to work on it, adding
parking blocks and extensions. Then we
went out and totally shredded this place
until everyone found out and came to skate
it. Then disaster struck, the city took parking
blocks and bolted them right down the mid-
dle of it. They call it a public hazard
Whenever the skaters skated it I only saw
a few wrecks, but they had pads on so they
didn't get hurt. My question is; should we
risk getting caught and tear the parking
blocks to pieces or should we find a new
place to have hot jams?
Confused "Mini Shred"

Both. Hell yes, blast, chop, pick, pry,
or jackhammer those suckers right out
of there. As for right now, you should
be out there looking for a new spot any-
way. Don't ever rely on just one spot, or
even ten. The more the merrier, the
deeper the scarier?
SKATER'S COURT
Me and my friend were shredding a rad
ditch when some fat jerk let his dogs loose.
One came over and bit me so I whacked
the dog with my skate a couple of times,
and killed it. They want to sue us. What do
you think?

Seems to me we covered a dog death
incident once before, only that time the
skater's board had flown over the fence
from the ramp and accidently killed the
canine. In your case you actually pum-
meled the pooch. Since, apparently, the
dog was not on a leash at the time of
attack you could claim self-defense.
But, then the question arises as to the
legality of your presence at said skate
spot and whether or not this dog owner
had any jurisdiction over its use. At any
rate, I'd have to say you better hope the
guy doesn't decide to press charges.
