HACKIN' OFF
Hacking has become a rather
'dirty word in computer circles,
mostly because of a recent change
in meaning, from a "normal" activity
to an illegal, underground one. The
term hacker used to described a
hobbiest who spent hours hacking
off in front off the computer; pro-
gramming, modeming or playing
games. Because of those who are
not 'computer literate, and the influ-
ence of our sensationalistic media,
a hacker is now someone who uses
his computer for illegal purposes.
These activities can be broken down
into three major areas: phreaking,
pirating, and environment manipula
tion. We'll assume every hacker has
a basic personal computer, storage
device (usually magnetic disks), out-
put device (screen or printer), and a
modem (to communicate via the
phone lines).
Phreaking
The phreaker makes phone calls
through local or long distance car-
riers without being charged. This is
accomplished in a number of ways.
Many phone companies have test
and operational tones they use to
convey information such as: money
placed in a pay phone, test under-
way, operator on-line, etc. One
method of phreaking relies on elec
tronic devices called boxes (usually
with a color to specify what the box
does, i.e. a red box duplicates nickel,
dime and quarter sounds from a
payphone) to duplicate these tones
and thus make calls for free. Many
phreaks bypass boxes all together
and use their computers to generate
tones with special programs.
A more common phreaking meth-
od, (mostly because of its ease), is
using an autodial modem to dial ac-
cess codes for long distance ser-
vices, noting which codes go
through. With the proper program
you can go to sleep at night while
your computer dials away, and the
next morning wake up with a print
out of 200 active codes. This is not
such a good idea, though, since Ma
Bell sometimes gets suspicious if
she notices 1000 two-second calls
to the local MCI port.
Pirating
Pirating is the unlawful duplication
of copyrighted software. Copies are
usually made for a friend or few, but
sometimes the pirated software is
sold to the "public." Manufacturers
take great pains trying to protect
their software from flagrant copying,
usually by placing and error on some
area of the disk that cannot be nor-
mally copied. When the program is
run it checks for the error. If the error
is not encountered then the program
stops, if the error is present it con-
tinues. Since most normal disk
copiers can't reproduce these errors
software is generally safe. On Apple,
IBM, Commodore and Atari STs, disk
copying can be accomplished with
a special program that reproduces
the errors on disk, though these pro-
grams are usually expensive. On
Atari's, and other computers with
'smart drives,' a hardware modifica-
tion is usually required to make a
working copy.
The last method is the most diffi-
cult, and requires extensive pro-
gramming knowledge. It is called
cracking and entails the modifica-
tion of a program to make it ignore
the copy protection. Once a disk is
cracked it can be copied using nor
mal methods.
Environment Manipulation
The third category of hacking,
glamorized by the movie "War
Games," is the unauthorized en-
trance into large high-powered com-
puter systems, either for the chal-
lenge, to learn about and manipulate
the system, or to steal or destroy
what they find. Once the phone num-
bers to a system are discovered, a
hacker finds an account, figures out
the password, enters the system
and manipulates the data. If a
hacker breaks into a credit agency
he can raise his credit rating or
destroy someone else's. Prime
targets are schools (really), credit
agencies, insurance companies,
motor vehicle agencies, and corpo-
ration records. One way numbers to
corporations are found is by autodial-
ing all numbers in an exchange and
having the computer note which
calls are answered by a computer at
the other end.
Another is called 'trashing' and is
the act of sifting through the target
company's trash to find records of
unlisted telephone numbers and
system passwords.

THRASHER BBS
Hackers today might be consid-
ered modern-day Robin Hoods;
standing up against large corpo-
rations and striking out on their
own to tear down the thin walls
separating them from the power,
enjoying the feeling that comes
from breaking their rules. DMV is
hacked and traffic violations re-
moved, codes for free long dis-
tance calls are stolen, high-pow-
ered systems are accessed and
notes are left telling how easy it
would be to crash, etc., all from
the bedroom of a teenage manip-
ulator with $300 worth of equip-
ment. Though there is a sense of
glamour attached to hacking, and
the amount of accessible informa-
tion, ripe for abuse, grows daily.
getting caught doing any of the
activities above can land you in
serious trouble.
THRASHER BBS operates at 300
and 1200 baud, between 4:30 p.m
