IT'S OKAY...O.K.?
I've been street shredding for
about 8 months with all the guys who
live around me. I'm starting to get
tired of it, so I thought I'd give free-
style a try, I did and I loved it. But
now everyone is telling me the only
people that freestyle are the wimps
that can't street shred. So I was won-
dering what everyone else thought?

It's not the style that makes the
difference, it's your style. You should
know whether you're a wimp or not,
no matter how other people cate-
gorize the way you spend your time.
Are you going to stop skating till you
get an answer? Do what you feel.

RE-BUTT-ALS
I am an avid fan of your magazine.
One thing that appeals to me the
most is the "rough edged" humor
and overall hardcore skate theme,
and it really burns me when some
lightweights misunderstand and
start raising hell about it. Of course
I am talking about all the Puritan
based feedback on the "Butt Shots"
article. I found the article quite
humorous and creative, but that's be-
cause I saw it for what it was-com-
edy, and that's all. I didn't see it as
some pornographic feature with sex-
ually explicit and suggestive
themes, because it wasn't. Some
people see a naked person in a
magazine such as THRASHER and
freak out. But, is there any difference
between a naked man in THRASHER
and a naked man in some art exhi-
bition? I should say not.

HISTORY OF THE BUTT SHOT
My older brother used to laugh
when I read an old skate mag from
the 70s because all the pics seemed
to be taken from the rear-always!
But THRASHER had the ultimate
butt shots in the October issue.

PARENTAL SUPPORT
Just wanted to write to your
magazine and say that not all moms
and dads are down on skating.
Some of us were skaters ourselves,
back in the Twilight Zone we called
the '60s, and we think that the wild
and crazy things you dudes can do
with your boards are really great.
Your mag is fantastic, full of great
ideas and terrific pictures, and my
kids, Rick (15) and Bob (14), have
learned a lot from your articles and
great pictures. As for the lady who
was offended by the article, well she
has no sense of humor. Tell her to
tune in to Mr. Rogers and leave skat-
ers alone! There are many parents
who think that skating is the greatest
and hottest sport around. We may
be over 30 but we're not all stale.
We think you guys are dynamite!

HAVE YOU RIDDEN
A FORD LATELY?
I'm a junior at Freed-Hardeman
College (very low key) in Henderson,
TN. Not many big, worthwhile things
happen here, but recently, ex-Presi-
dent Gerald Ford came and spoke
at a big benefit dinner. Later that
night three other dudes and I de-
cided to drop by a nice inn in Jackson
and see if he's there. Check. The
cars he rode to school in were all
there, so I pulled up beside the one
he rode in and died for a skate
sticker. Just then I remembered
there was an Alva sticker taped to
my dash that I hadn't peeled yet. So
I proceeded to attach it to the side
of the car. If you can't risk a little
danger for skating, what can you risk
it for?
STUPID TREND

In reference to all the articles in
your mag about "trendies":
People are people, skaters are
skaters; people who don't skate are
hard to deal with (usually), but I won't
get into that now. Just what is a
"trendy"? Someone that dresses
stupid? Somebody that skates bad?
Beginners can't really help skatin
bad, and some folks like to dress
dorky. I am in agreement with all the
skaters who have written to you
about getting rid of letters pertaining
to the stupid title of "trendies," and
will be thrilled when skaters stop
using this dumb term.

BREAKING THE HABIT
I am a 15-year-old skater from
Utah and I have a problem with
drugs. It is such a big problem that
I sold my number one love, my
skateboard, to buy drugs. About a
week after I made this dumb move
I found myself in drug rehabilitation,
and I lost the two things I love most,
drugs and skating. The only way I
am staying sane is by thumbing
through my past issues of THRASH-
ER. Thanks for the support.
GOING PUBLIC
Mike Laul
Salt Lake City, UT
Let's hear it for the states that are
allowing public skate ramps. This is
the best sign that skating is indeed.
thriving at its fullest potential. If skat-
ing is going to progress we the skat
ers must become organized and
push our town councils into sponsor-
ing public ramps. The major bene-
factor of ramps is that they are
cheaper and easier to build than the
skateparks of yesterday. So if you're
located in a ripping skate scene with
no place to skate, ask your local gov-
ernment if they would be interested
in sponsoring a public ramp. We're
located in Portland, Maine and are
in the process of organizing a public
ramp. Skateboarding will only
prosper if you are willing to make it
the best sport around.
We're going for it!
