"I think this whole idea of the zine thing
is quite a breath of fresh air from all the
hyped-up, big time magazines (Thrasher
included)...Big time operations always
seem to lose their roots, per say, although
Thrasher usually does not disappoint me,
but there is something to an underground
zine that gives it so much more appeal.
You discover an address, you send a
stamp and wait-wait patiently until one
day you receive a copy of their zine. It's like
the whole feeling of skateboarding, you
never know when you're gonna find that
amazing pool, you just got to wait for your
day
Excerpt from Geek Attack No.2
"Thoughts and Comments,"
by Phil Franklin
It would be difficult to label ourselves
a culture. Society has gotten so com-
plex and out of hand that the ability to
relate to current thought-trends or the
ideals of the "majority" is a frustrating
prospect, if not an impossible one. So
we have subcultures, pockets of
resistance or submittance that mock,
mirror and miniaturize our society.
Distinct groups are defined by a number
of things: fashion, attitude, social
status, frequency of brain-waves,
methods of having a good time, etc-the
most important aspect usually being
attitude, though fashion and outer
appearance are sometimes confused
with the real thing. We place people into
groups: "He is a redneck, she is a wavo,
they are all skinheads, I am confused,
etc..." Some choose their subculture by
the clothes they wear, by what they pick
up at the store. When a particular
subculture gains in popularity, joining
with that group becomes an attractive
option for one who feels he must find a
place, must become something that he
can admire. So it goes, and the
originators of groups feel cheated and
hold themselves elite, above the rest

and more understanding of any "group"
attitudes. These originators do what
they can to set themselves apart once
again. They fear the destruction of their
subculture by the dilution of ideas and
they go underground, grasping desper-
ately for some life-line to link the
originals, the "hardcores" back to-
gether. Communication is a life-line.
Writing, drawing, skating and thinking
are a release. Fanzine's are innumera-
ble and set this subculture apart.
Last year, we printed an article about
underground zines, or "rags" if you
will. We did not print the addresses.
This year we're not going to either. This
is a review of what's currently coming
out via the underground "presses" in
this subculture. We could print the
addresses, but why? There are many
ways of getting them for yourself, if you
are dedicated. Almost every zine has a
list of addresses, for instance. Why
make public something that exists (in
its true form) only because of its
clandestine nature? Those who care
will establish their own networks.
Those who don't, won't bother us with
their apathetic ways.
GEEK ATTACK
Geek Attack is pure entertainment - full
of jokes, puzzles, contests, skating, great
stickers, useful info and off-the-wall
humor; forming one of the best in the skate
gonre, certainly the most entertaining.
Geeks are Phil Franklin, Herb Newman
and Neil Swartzfarb and they come from
Nanuet, New York. Contents of No.2
include: "The Adventures of Football
Head, Rate-a-Skate, Geek Style Ramp, 2
free stickers and lots more. "Remember:
the long arm of the law usually isn't
attached to an invert. However; urethane
is faster than leather. Results; shoes of
leather flock together, but skaters know
and fly like feathers."

THIS IS REALITY
"Zine of the God's"
First class 8 ½" x 11" zine from Unity.
ME with some of the best designed issues
of any skate/music/political zine to date.
Full of thought bending humor, off the wall
comix and good music and movie reviews.
Editor Scott Herring sez: "it's 1985 and this
is still reality. 1984 was an extremely good
year for things like MTV (Money TeleVis-
lon) and right wing political organizations,
but what's the difference. Conservative is
chic. Being for prayer in schools is to the
80's what being anti-war was to the 60's.
So you can read this and go back to your
video games on your new computer or you
can try to find something somewhat more
creative, something with a few rules of
your own. Stop taking for granted every-
thing that's being fed you, ask some
questions, make some conclusions of your
own. Remember, by bending, folding,
spindling and mutilating you at least make
things interesting." Contributors for latest
issue were Bandit, Wendy Cody, C. Cole,
C.H., D.S., S.H., Mahl Vaseline and
NBAU. A good chunk of reality.
MEGA-ZINE
Thick zine of true skate devotion that
covers the New England area with a style
of its own. Responsible for its contents are
the Loud Ones from Deighton Mas-
sachusetts. Price is $1.00 or beer for the
scoop on this area as the Loud Ones see
it. Good photos, funny stuff, lots of Loud
Ones coverage and the raddest mega-
skate-chick cover art to date.
UNITED SKATES
The Nuclear Youth skate team brings us
this rag from Columbus, MS. packed with
skate photos, music reviews, good writing
and a general "Skate or Die" attitude. Issue
No.5 just out with stories about Clown
ramp, Bug ramp, Swamp ramp, D.C.
adventure and local bank jam. Good
coverage of Eastern and Southern scenes.

AP
Clean 5" x 7" from W. Germany written
in clean english by clean German skaters
Magnus Nanneson, Mark Rieger and
Claus Grabke. Death Zone says: "We
started this Mag, because we feel, that
there is a strong need for an international,
critical and honest skate-mag, that pushes
the "real" Skater...the "real" Ska-
ter?...what's that?...The "real" Skater in
our opinion has a background as a Skater
and a sentimental relationship with
Skateboarding. He sees Skateboarding
an art-form and not an athletic sort of sport.
He is devoted to radicalness and not, as in
Jock sports, to height, width or goals."
Issue No.1 is well done, with 1985 photo
contest, skate spot coverage, profiles of
international skaters and basically good
writing and photo coverage of the Euro-
pean skate scene. Price is 1,50 Dm (about
75 cents).

Apathetic Injection, a music/skate/punk
zine from Lincoln, NE. Blade, Mott-ly,
Jack. Ginx and Russ put the thing together,
with issue No.3 being the latest we have
seen. In-depth band reviews, good pics
and decent stick-man comics litter its
pages. "The monsters are back at the
door, trying to censor reality."
BOARDER
"Boarder zine is a stupid zine not made
for any real reason except to be made.
Boarder has no deadlines we make the
zine whenever. So says Pete, Willy and
Bruce of Boarder zine, another one from
Tuscon, AZ. Skating usually prevails fully

SEVERE HEAD INJURY
If Severe Head Injury is any indication of
the mind-state developing in the younger
crowd of the South, we are in for radical
change when this generation moves in to
replace the ideals of their old, tired
"superiors." Good commentary and a
bleak but realistic outlook by Buckit,
Johnny, ZAAT, Stage E. Dive and Bruno
D. Goon from Gautier, Mississippi. This
zine rips, full of original ideas, artwork,
photos and writing-plus it comes out on a
fairly regular basis. Classic skate art.

coverage, music notes and political
statements splatter the pages of this wildly
designed rag. Keep up the good work.
SWANK ZINE
From Salano Beach in CA comes a true
skate zine put out by local Del Mar skater
and established photographer Tod Swank,
with some photo help from Grant Brittain..
Full of skate stories, humor, comics and
good shots of the pros and assorted local
shredders, Swank packs each issue with
original work, including a no photo issue, a
poster issue, pro skate interviews, square
pool interview, great fiction (check out
No.5 with "Dad's Favorite Chair") and
much, much more. Swank has only been
going for a little over a year but has already
established itself as one of the best total
skate publications.
THE SKATE SLATE
100% skating courtesy of I, Me, We, He,
Them, Us and Others out of hot, dusty
Sacramento, CA. The Skate Slate is a
skater's skate rag, featuring skate photos,
skate fiction, skate poetry, skate contest

graphics. The writing is well done and to
the point, no space is wasted in Their effort

BOARDER
A non-xerox print mag from the Land
Down Under, with all the usual blemishes
of a true skate zine (handwritten captions,
pasted on headlines, etc.). Perfect Transi-
tion offers good coverage of the scene
from the other side of the world. The
photos are above average quality due to
the more advanced printing process,,
articles are good, music coverage in-depth
and strange Aussie humor shines through-
out. Includes Dr. Rick Blackhead, with
answers to problems from Charlie Manson.
"...Try and explain why you skate and that
you're not out for hassles. If they keep
hassling, send $469.50 for a 44 Magnum-
the most powerful handgun in the world..."
GO FOR IT
From Middlesex, England and the pen
of Steve Douglas we have the glossy,
radical Go For It, packed with high quality
pics and dry English humor. The latest
issue sots itself apart due to the profes
sional printing process. Includes pictures
of some of the hottest, good coverage of
the European scene, questionairre and
odd comics. An original.
LAPPER
Formerly B.W.S.M. (Bruce and Wade's
Skate Mag), Lapper is constructed in Falls
Church, VA and does a fine job with
original coverage of the East. This is one
true skate zine that is not completely
wrapped up in covering its own. Much of
the content in here is submitted from the
outside, giving Lapper a wider scope than
the average neighborhood rag, Issue No.3
of B.W.S.M. has one of the hottest
snoboard/body-builder betties ever
featured. No.4 has good coverage of
Wiggy's famed Ramp Jam.
This is by no means a complete list of
what is being published. Look for more
reviews in future issues.
