Here it is! The triumphant return of
Metallica to the Bay Area, after a
steadfast tour in Europe and the
U.S.A. which was met with over-
whelming response. This was night
number one of two sold out ex-
travaganzas of powerhouse as
saults and the crowd was hungry for
some pure thrusting metal
Named by numerous magazines,
fanzinea, and radio programs as the
best metal band of 1984, Metallica
have quickly risen to a peak whore
only a few reach in the climb to suc-
cess. The current album Ride the
Lightning has broken into Billboard's
top 100, a mighty feat for a band who
were once supported by only an
exuberant underground following:
now the following is extreme, Metal-
licamania has erupted. The first
Metalica release "Kill 'em Air is one
of the classic speed metal records of
all time, with its quick approaches
and hungry rapid guitar lashes.
Some twelve inchers have kept up
the intensity, and then "Ride the
Lightning" was released, not as fast
as "Kill yet furious with power and
knowledgable ambition. These two
releases are the strength of Metal-
lica, and as the severe brain
mashers wonder what is in store
next, tonite was the chance to see if
Metallica had changed or not
Opening bands Death Angel and
Armored Saint got the crowd moving
and fist lunging, yet the massive au
dience was thirsting, and only Metal-
lica could quench that thirst
Amplifiers stacked on the left and
right sides on the long stage floor
had large foamlike banners draped
over with the grinning monster off
the Jump into the Fire 12 painted
flourescent colors which weakly
glowed outward, making it difficult to
perceive exactly what it was As the
curtains arose, and the dry ice
steam filtered into the atmosphere, a
gant Metalica banner hung in the
back drop. A large black canvas with
Metalica gistering in siver sparkles
as lightning bolts reached down to
the electric chair
Then the uproarious had silenced
as the guitar intro to Fight Fire We
Fre sounded up the alarm, the
crowd cheered and knew that now it
was time for the barrage. The intro
worked into the commanding ap
proach of sheer speed and cyclon
ing power as the band members en
tered the stage floor, thrusting them
selves across, whipping their long
manes of hair in banging fury Lars

stand up microphone, Hotfield's
vocals thundered out as the moving
crowd sung along in fascinated de-
light. Headbangers up front were in
full form, lunging and bobbing. The
floor moved as the audience
thrashed back and forth, almost in a
large trampling manner. People
would climb up upon shoulders to
walk or crawl to the stage, to get the
big dive. Hundreds worked their way
to the front with a few lucky ones
reaching the platform. Yet the main
obstacle was the bouncers, who
would drag them out if they even got
a grasp of the stage diver. It was a
war of cat and mouse as Metallica
roared through "Fight Fire with Fire,
Hetfield continuously sneering with
wide open eyes, enjoying to the hilt,
joys of heated activity within the
band and the boisterous crowd.
Hotfield makes contact with the
screaming crowd, "San Fran
cisco...it's great to be back. sav
agely, Metallica whips into some
more of their material. Kirk Hammet
constantly focused upon as he
pelted out some sheering leads.

front lashing the air with their turbo-
lent manes of hair spinning and
cracking. As the heads bobbed in
obedient command. Metallica's fifth
number introduced Caff Burton
doing an extremo bass solo of wild
sounds and frenzied riffs as the at-
tack slowly began to form. Drums
entering and exiting, as guitars
quietly paced themselves in, then it
erupted and worked into "For Whom
the Bell Tolls."
Metallica were loud, but not as
loud as hoped. The sound was off a
hair, with drums a bit too prominent
and guitars not enough. The sound
man slowly foxed the problem after
half the set, around "No Remorse"
off the 1st album. This number
exploded into a hammerhouse of
speed and furious aggression as
they brought the schizoid thrash to
metal mayhem. The crowd full of
metalers and punks frantically flalled
and jerked Sweat was flying in
every direction. Metallica went into
Fade to Black," and then "Seek and
Destroy' which Hetfield dedicated to
all the "Freaks" who have supported
them. A skull crushing anthem of
breakneck quickness. The crowd
was pretty crazed after that and
Metallica put down a no holds bar-
red thrash assault called "Whiplash"
that hurled at a 100 mph hour
speedcore ferocity. The song was
incredibly fast, virtually destroying
the boundaries of rapidness in the
heavy metal world. Hetfield said
thank you, good night, the band
waved and left the stage.
Instantly the audience demanded
an encore, shouting "Metalica,"
stomping, pounding, creating as
much chaotic noise as possible, and
they kept it up. At least 5 minutes
went by before Metallica came back
out. Hammett exposing his anarchy
1-shirt and Burton with a Misfits skull
shirt. They zoomed into "Creeping
Death" which was the tune, that the
crowd was chanting for.
A very intense piece off the sec-
ond album which features varieties
of chord changes and tempo differ-
ences. The encore was loud, the
sound man cranking up the volume
for full effect. At close view, Hel-
field's fingers were flying on the
guitar sticks, an utter blur of picking
velocity. Hammet hit some more
electric leads which echoed bril-
lantly in the hall. Two more numbers
and Metallica was finished. They set
down their instruments, waved and
shocked hands with the crowd and
left the stage Except for James Het
field who had walked back to the
drum riser He grabbed a micro-
phone said, "thank you, good night."
dropped the mike and hurredly ran
across the stage and dived deep
into the crowd A great gesture, as
the bouncers quickly tried to recover
him which wasn't an easy task
Metallica provided an entertaining
show full of popular numbers, no
new songs unleashed this nite. The
crowd was strong and energetic
getting into the music. The bouncers
were busy all nite dragging out the
stage divers. A Kabuki house record
for kick cuts. As the fans left, most
were with smiles and enthusiastic
chatter looked over the hail and
thought, not loud enough yet very
good musically. But, what will hap
pen to this place when. Venom
plays? Metallica are locals, Veniom
are out of towners Will it be crazier?
