that he threw up," I said. He didn't even blink
You better stop laughing"
Things were getting lame. Everything I
touched with the chopsticks, would fall apart. I
was eating like a slob and I was hating it. Musta
been because of this guy.
"Hey! Knock it off know what you're thinking
and it's your own fault
"You're making me bat aff this stuff, and I cant
even eat it right
"You must learn. You think I got it right on the
first try?"
That looks gnarly!" I was referring to what
assumed was an oyster roll
is gnarly, Ubet ya
"It looks like snot
is. Snot from a shell
Looks like a loogle."
No. It's a loocher It's the kind that comes
from right about here," he pointed to his sinus
areas. This interview stuff wasn't turning out to
be half bad, I thought. Then he said, "They say
oysters are from the ocean, but, no way. You
know those pearl divers? They go down in the
ocean, open the shells and blow their noses in
them. It used to be just for good luck to find more
pearls, then I guess some wise-guy served
some in a restaurant, people liked em', then
big-bucks' and big-laughs' for the Japanese.
I started bending and smirking again
"You better watch it, that lady's gonna come
over and give you more water."
"She thought I was choking. I don't know
about this stuff we're eating right now. Now you
know why I've never come to this place. I never
thought I should
Who's Cindy
That's my old gtfriend."
"Ohhhh-kay! So, now you're on Powell/
Peralta."
She lived too far away."
Okay, 1 said. So, Stacy...?" He reckoned to
continue
"He gave me a board. An experimental
Caballero. This was 1980, 1981.
"Any contests behind you at this point?"
"Gold Cup!" I said it real fast.
"Cold Cuts?"
"Gold Cup
"Tve heard of that," he said. I believe he was
entoring his world now..
I did alright. I got better through the years. In
the beginning of the series, I was way down
there, in the standings. But, by the end, I got, ke
tenth in a contest. It was the last Gold Cup 1
think
"So you got tenth, the last Gold Cup, then all
these little girls swarmed you, or what?
"I was too small, what else could I say? I was
real small."
They couldn't find you?
"So, there I was, sponsored. My first contest
on Powell, and I think I got third. No, I got fourth
That was at Whittier."
"When did you turn Pro?"
"Skate City, Whittler. The Rusty Harris Series
I got third there. I couldn't believe it. I was really-
surprised. I don't even know what happened
after that."
"OK, we won't talk about that, we'll talk about
other things. What inspires you most when you
skate?" This guy was sharp. Even after three
orders of sake. "What do you think about?" he
continued.
"What I can do to have the most fun, when I
skate
But what makes you skate? There's got to be
something beyond that."
"It's an urge. It's like, I'll be sitting around in
school, or driving "The sushi chefs began
yelling orders and exclamations of enthusiasm
in the background. The interviewer took notice
He snapped out loud.
"Hey, sshhh! I'm doing questions with answers
into a tape recorder. No screaming
I begged to continue "T think about doing
tricks in a pool or something. Then I just want
to skate, I get disturbed about it. I'll think about
new tricks, and I'll want to try them right then."
"What's your threshold?
"I want to skate better than I did last time. It
do worse, then I get bummed. It's basically an
adrenaline rush. There's sometimes that fil
skate, and I really don't even want to, and 1
shouldn't be skating That's when it's a drag. But
most of the time, I'm pretty happy when I skate.
Y'know, I get all pumped up: Sometimes, when
I'm in a bummed mood, skate to get happier.
It works
"Do you think about other things when you
skate, or do you just think about skating?
don't think about alot of things when I skate.
Like, anything that is happening to me Tomor
row, maybe what's in the future."
Try a piece of this, it's salmon. It's cold and
clammy, he reached over, offering a piece of
pinkish meat tiggled.
"It tasted like air, I said.
"There's a definite air about this fish. It smells
ke, sh. Let's move along," he said. I won-
dered what planot Mr. Interviewer was from. "Is
there anyone, individual, or groups of individu-
als, or, an individual frame of thought that has
inspired you most in what you do? An ideological
frame of thought that you follow along?
1ke the way Christian approaches skating."
"Hap-hazard, wreckless?" he asks.
"He goes as high as he can, until he falls."
is that what you do, or, do you see that,
recognize it and appreciate it?"
But it's not necessarily what you do?"
"Yeah, right just try to skate. Sometimes I try
to push it as far as I can, maybe that's the
Christian attitude. I can go as high as I can,
sometimes. But Christian, he goes as high as he
wants. He just keeps getting more and more
speed. I can't skate like that
Would you say your style is somewhat
limited?
"Yeah. Certain tricks I do, are just not right for
my style. I still do em, but they don't look right."
Yeah, there's a certain awkwardness to your
style. You do radical things, and you do them
out-there', but they just, somehow, don't look
correct." He was looking for nerves but found
Yeah, right
This might attribute to the controversial
attitude people have towards you, Tony Hawk?
Yeah, sure, he does lots of tricks, but, so what!"
"Circus tricks," there, I said it.
Since we're on the subject, elaborate. Why'd
you say, circus tricks?
"Circus tricks, are these tricks, as Lester said,
You twist your body, your hands, your board in
the air. Get so flamboyant, that you can't even
tell what it is
Do you do that on purpose?
keep trying to make up new tricks, and they
all seem to be like that. All the good style tricks,
non-circus tricks, have been done."
"What tricks have you innovated?"
The finger flip
"Ever had sake before?"
Tastes like paint thinner. That's why it's good.
It's unique. What are some of the things that you
think about most, what concerns you from day to
day?
The guy was into the Sake, and was trying to
get deep. "I don't know, I think about what I
should be doing in school. What I should be
doing for myself. Like, if I should get out of
school, or not, or if I should skate. I'm a junior in
high school and have already passed an equiva-
lency test to get out. My mom wants me to get
out this year, skip being a senior, and go into Jr.
College."
The interview guy's eye's glassed, and he
began to reflect High school was fun, edit
Some of the things were traditional, but they're
all what you make of them 1 did the prom thing
What are your scholastic interests?
"Math, and physics. Physical sciences. I'm
not into history, or English, or generic courses."
So, do you have your aspirations in order
yet?
"No."
Still too early, buh
Yeah, I can't even picture myself not skating
"You can combine intelligence with skating
y'know."
"Yeah"
The sun rises everday, and it sets every
night. It does. It's a fact. You know that everyday,
you'll wake up, until, one day you wont Between
now and then, anything can happen, you just got
to apply yourself. Is there anything that concems
you in the way of world events?
"I'm not even into the news. People talk about
news in class, and I don't even know what
they're talking about." He was leading me
You don't necessarily know how to translate,
say, an incident that's happened on the other
side of the world, into terms in which it will
directly affect you?
"Yeah.
"It's a knowledge that's good to know, even if
on a casual basis. What would you say would be
a bad thing that could happen to you?"
Things like nuclear war."
Does that scare you?"
"Yeah, it does."
The prospect of waking up, getting into your
car, it's a beautiful day, you go into a store, shop,
come out and all of a sudden hear sirens, then
the explosions, and your whole body is inciner-
ated. And it started out like a day like any other
day. Do you think it'll be like that?
think there will be more of a forewarning."
A gradual intensity of events?"
"Yeah."
"But if you don't get into the news, how are
you going to know?" he said.
He had me there. "I figure, I'd rather not know
anything about it. When you try to think about it,
you can't imagine it, so you just turn it away."
"If you saw things drawing to this lame conclu-
sion, what would you think, and what would you
do? Nothing?" he said. He was serious.
"I would....I paused, thought, "...yeah, I
wouldn't do anything. You could always try, but
who could you talk to?"
"You can talk to everybody you know for
starters, and try to get them concerned, just like
you. Before you know it, you've got ten more
people concerned. Ten people, who before were
so accustomed to shutting out undesirable
thoughts, when told in plain words will become
concerned, and possibly do something them-
selves. But maybe they've been too ignorant to
understand it, or it was too big for them to even
conceive. I'd rather of had people tell me to shut
up, then to never have said anything at all. The
voice starts out small but exercised, it becomes
bigger, and larger, and stronger."
When you get down to when you know you're
gonna die, I'm sure alot of people will change,"
added
Big deal. Alot of good it'll do then. Ir be too
late. You've already let the idiots in power get
their cold hands firmly on the trigger, a death
grip. You can't pry their fingers off. Realize
doom, ten steps ahead of time, and scream,
This sucks' so you can live the rest of your life
on your terms. Nothing more. One band, the
Cravats, have summarized it this way in a line
from one of their songs: Think about it this way,
has anybody else fought one?"
They built em', so they're gonna use em."
That, doesn't necessarily have to become
reality. If you see a fuse burning, are you gonna
stand and watch it, or are you gonna try and put
it out?The bomb is gonna be real close to home
