UNDERGROUND
The Metallic explosion continues
New bands to watch for are Death
from Florida-speed thrashing mad-
ness, plus Poison, Death Angel,
Crucifier, Hirax, Crying Steel, and
Gunfire. The new Slayer Lp "Hell
Awaits should be out now as Slayer
gears up for the support slot of the
U.S. tour of Venom. That U.K. 3
piece of demonic grinding are finally
coming back with their explosive
stage show, all ears will be blasted
with the immense fury. This will be a
power packed extravaganza you
won't want to miss! In the metal fan-
zine world, looks like a zine to cover
it all, called Powerthrash and back-
ed by one Gene K. Houry. Power-
thrash will feature speedcore,
metal, hard core and more, all in a
44 page layout with some poster
type pullouts also enclosed. This is a
big effort for this new undeground
sound, currently you can receive
pre-issue newsletters from Gene
that are a well of information. In the
newsletters you receive upcoming
news, playlists, hardcorrespon-
dence, magazine listings from
across the globe, band addresses,
and coming next. To get this, send
3-22 cent stamps to Gene K.
Houry, 112 Mountainside Terrace,
Clifton, NJ, 07013 U.S.A. Metal-
lica now on Elektra Records, as
they have re-released the awesome
"Ride the Lightning" Lp, hopefully
Metallica will keep the energy and
not fall into the major label letdown
These quys are back from their
European tour and hitting some
heavy dates in the U.S.
7 Seconds recorded a few songs
with lan MacKaye (of Minor Threat
fave) in Washington D.C. on their
successful U.S. Tour. Now those
songs will come out on a 12" Lp re-
leased by Positive Force/BYO.
Positive Force being 7 Seconds
label and the workings of their new
store in Reno. If interested contact
Positive Force at 1790 Silverado
Bl. No. 237 Reno, Nevada 89502
Bad news is 7 Seconds is having
some inner band problems and
some members have quit. Let's
hope this outfit stays together to
keep their harmonious spirit! The
political thrash outfit from LA.
iconoclast have a 7" Lp due out
soon, Iconoclast have also had
some numerous band changes, but
looks the current line-up will prevail.
Watch also for a track by Iconoclast
on the next Flipside compilation Lp.
Orange county has churned out yet
another aggressive ensem-
ble namely HVY DRT who mix a
great blend of thrash and musical
abilities, another band to keep your
eyes pierced for. Youth Brigade,
probably fully recovered from their
European tour have started work on
their next Lp to feature a variety of
styles all with that Youth Brigade
touch. Collectors be on the look out,
the 2nd pressing of Youth
Brigade's, "Sound & Fury" had a -
mited pressing of 12 on clear vinyl,
count 'em, that will be a priority. Also
the new Sam Hain release "Unholy
Passion" will have a limited colored
vinyl run of 500, so seek out, you
bold collectors. D.O.A. just released
a new 12 Lp in the U.K. which is a
collection of John Peel Sessions.
John plays! U.K. news includes a
new release by Legion of Parasites
with a scorching Lp's worth of Amer-
ican influenced thrash. Entitled
"Prison of Life," LO.P. really
brutalize the speed and attack the
decibels, it's a quality release. Po-
tential Threat have a new 7" out on
the Children of the Revolution
label that smokes with enticing
female vocals! Plus new Lps by
Conflict who offer their 7" for a mere
49p (U.K. money) which is incredibly
cheap. Now let's hope once it gets
imported to the states, the price
stays low. Also a newie by the Flux
of Pink Indians and soon a Lp re-
lease by Alternative.
If you haven't noticed already,
there is a growing psychedelic revi-
val. Paisleys and wild designs being
adorned once again with those early
60's sounds coming back by new
bands. Most of the activity seems to
be taking place in Sweden, Au-
stralia, England and of course right
here in the United States. Is this to
be the next wave? Will bands like
Redd Kross bring back the 70's re-
vival? With the new glitter revival
happening also. You know what this
means, early Kiss will be brought
back again, doesn't seem like that
long ago
In a completely different type of
medium, how many of you enjoy
comic books? Of course you're all
familiar with Marvels and D.C.'s, but
have you checked out the new titles.
Sad to say one company has al-
ready ceased publication, but the
others are keeping this new breed
strong! Interesting reading and great
artwork is found in comics such as
Nemesis, a strip originally pub-
ished in the UK, Mr. Monster,
Strange Days, and Mister X featur
ing the art of Jamie Hernandez,
who you might be familiar with from
his work for Agression, Dr. Know &
Stalag 13. Keep up the good work
Jamie! Plus Dave Steven's-Roc-
keteer, one of the most incredibly
drawn books. And also there is
D.C.'s Swamp Thing, which fea-
tures excellent story and very bag-
gish art. One of the best books on
the market. Comics have changed
drastically over the years and the
end result is one of character and
sheer enjoyment!...
