plants and it led to a hole in a
wooden fence that contained a way
bowled 6' backyard pool with
rideable shallow end, the "blood
bowl." The local kids showed and
began shooting us with slingshots,
just when everyone was grinding
hard. Malba ground front-side over
the midshallow deathbox.
"Hey cut that shit out, we're sorry
we're not black."
By this time there were kids of all
ages around the pool, checking it
out and a couple outside the fence
throwing lemons. "Hey pick that shit
up!" (they picked it up).
Brian and Malba inquired as to
what's wrong with having fun.
Kids: "We like to break dance."
Brian Loyd-Mongo Creature
"Well fine, you get the shallow
end and we get the deep end," and
that's how it went until we bailed for
a nearby ramp. Malba was doing
lapover stand-up "frontside grinds."
Scott and Kanights blazed while the
JFA contingent practiced our bizarre
brand of skating. We crashed at
Scott's house, owing heavily for the
hospitality and the ride. Looking at a
show tomorrow, a ride through the
Broadway tunnel and more skating!
S.F.. (DAY 2)
We woke up about noon the next
day (Thurs.) and watched Andy
Griffith, Street Scott came home
early from his highrise steel job and
passed out. We street skated the
infamous hilly streets to the bus
(Mabuhay), shooting the Broadway
tunnel on the way. The Broadway
tunnel is a two way downhill tile
upside down halfpipe with a steel
pedestrian walkway for each side. It
echoes real bitchin' and pushing
into it yields speed down the
buzzsaw sounding texture metal
walkways. Every so often there's a
fire hydrant on the left and a call box
on the right. Sometimes they're
coincidental. At the bottom is a bank
called the "Broadway hump," me,
Brian and Bam skated it for awhile.
and then went to the club for the
The show at the Mab was a gas!
Micke Alba showed, as did Cabal-
lero, the Rabbitman-Mo (complete
with pelts and pellet gun with a clip).
Street Scott passed out, Olson
wandered in late. The DMR showed
with brownies (a Bay Area tradition
by now). Eggs, guys from Indy-all
the skaters were there! Afterwards
Brian skated some Chinatown brick
banks and I loaded equipment.
Olson's face showed at the door of
the bus and instantly me, Brian and
Bulky (with longboard) are carving
down way steep streets.
The destination was an 11 story
parking garage with elevator. After
checking all the commando en
trances we walked right in the front,
ran up one flight of stairs and took
the elevator to the top. After relaxing
a bit, Brian carved into a Christie
with me and Olson luging. 6 floors
below, we shot out into flatbottom,
cutting across the garage to hit the
steeper ramps on the other side.
One floor later, we're being chased
by a security guard. The unspoken
Car tow, Lincoln, NE
rule is to split up and jam: We did!
We didn't see Olson after that, so
we shot the Broadway tunnel again
-throwing firecrackers for effect,
hit the bus and split for LA
LA. (HOLLYWOOD)
We hit a Pep Boys to look for
points, at the entrance to where we
parked was Bob Hope's star (they
have movie stars imbedded in the
sidewalks of Hollywood). The Pep
Boys didn't have the part so we
drove down Santa Monica B,vd..
and parked the bus in some shade
at a sidestreet park. I called my
brother, we had an "Oki Dog" and
skated some giant curbs. I called
my brother again and then we went
and bought a drum-head in a cool
shop with an instrument that makes
all the kung-fu T..V.. show noises.
By this time Kenter was out of the
question so hit the Cathay de
Grande. I hit a bunk in the bus to
grab a few before the show. The
next thing I know, everybody's out of
the bus
Voice outside the bus: "Is every-
body out?"
Someone: "No, Don's in there
asleep."
I hear this and get up, meeting me
at the door was a cop with a
flashlight goin', "O.K. Don, outside."
We were instructed to stand facing
the bus with our hands over our
heads while one cop rifled through
all of our shit. You don't think about
right and fair, civil rights, probable
cause, illegal search and seizure
when you're lined up in front of a
guy with a gun while another guy
tears open your stuff. They left in an
unmarked car saying only, "we got a
complaint," and "you're not parking
here all nite" (we were parked
illegally). They and others cruised
by all nite, but didn't stop.
T.A. and Mike Ball showed
(Skoundrelz), Jan (Vandals), Joe
Wood (TSOL), Lucy from "Killer
Pussy," my brother, Big Steve (Dec.
'83 Thrasher cover) and a few other
skaters and nons. We left for Vegas.
Oh yeah! Brain and Bam left their
skates in my brother's truck.
PHOENIX, AZ.
Phoenix sucked. Some record
store guy spread the rumor that we
weren't in town and the gig was off.
The tour ended with a
whimper...shoulda ended it the nite
before in Las Vegas at a well at-
tended party complete with a full
day of skating. At the end of the
Phoenix show we did "Disney," and
somewhere in all the feedback
slipped into a little of "The End," by
the Doors. I kicked the head off of
my amp at the end of the song and
instead of making a loud hideous
crash, it didn't emit a sound. Approp-
riate. Later in the week, me and
Brian found a cool fast twisty banked
downhill.
With a whole summer of skating
and playing under our belts, we
went into the recording studio... "and
it's all true even if it didn't really
happen." (Ken Keesey-toured the
country in a bus 20 years ago.)
