the highways in one massive metal
tumor. Families stranded in over-
heated cars stare at graffiti scrawled
on overpass walls by enlightened
skateboarders. RUSH HOUR
EVACUATION!!! The gravity of the
words hit like microscopic dirt clods
exploding in the frontal lobes of the
brain DUH!!! DUH!!! DUH!!!
Meanwhile the skaters (who by
day skate upside down in under-
ground sewer pipes; cruise the
streets at night under huge halogen
streetlights that burn the retina like a
cigarette) beat the heat (and the G)
in more ways than one, exit the
meltdown via storm drain shouting

Whatever happened to all the girl
vertical skaters? Jana Payne, etc.
I've seen some letters by girls that
skate and in August a whole page of
a girl skating (in Something Else) in-
stead of standing around looking
dumb and pretty. I started skating
about 9 months ago at parks, pools.
I skate at Upland mostly and though
I can't skate the combi-bowl yet I
keep on getting better and plan to be
in there soon. Skating is the only fun
I can find and the better and higher I
get the more fun I have. Aren't there
enough girls to have a women's divi-
sion in vertical skate contest like
they did (last one I seen) at the Dog
Bowl Pro/Am at Marina in '78 or 79?
I call on all girls who skate to do
something. Skate or don't. It's a
wishful, sinful, wicked blue being the
only girl (lately) at a skate park.

MAKE A SCENE
A few months ago I wrote to tell
you about the growing scene in
Statesville, N.C. Since then I've
moved and found myself stranded in
a town with no skate scene at all.
After a few weeks of searching I
found a decent bank that half-way
satisfies my hunger for vert. I plan to
build a halfpipe when I can raise the
money (it's hard to "gather mate-
rials alone). That's not what I wrote
about. I need to have contact, with
any skater, anywhere near this town.
Even if you don't know where the
hell this place is, write anyway.
Please!! I am on the verge of insan-
ity! One more thing: Are there any
girl skaters in this part of the coun-
try? If so contact me.

OGDEN RAMP RAT
I'm a skater, of course. I live in
Ogden, Utah. Many people skate
here. There are two ramps in my
neighborhood. One of them is mine,
it's a fiberglass ramp with a wood flat
bottom (hence the name "Wood Bot-
tom). When it snows here people
ski, and I snowboard and there's no
girl skaters here, but girl skiers, so
I'm going to go blaze on my ramp.
