people at the end of the picnic table. Another big
kid named GSD was doing sliders and these
cool hops over the curbs. Steve Olson was a
real stylish, older kinda skater doing some funny
stuff like wheelies and these "kickflips" on the "
banked ramps where he'd flip the board with his
feet and turn around at the same time. Billy Ruff
was good, he did about a hundred tricks like butt
spins and hand stands. First place was won by
a little kid named Steve Caballero. He was the
best, his airs were way high off the ramps and
he did all those footplants while grabbing the
board. He got there right before the contest
started and even borrowed Guerrero's skate
'cause he didn't have the right one, I think

they're on the same team or something.
Next they did the amateur freestyle finals. It
seemed like nobody was surprised when Bob
Schmelzer won it, he's real good. A guy with this
really rad mohawk type haircut was second, his
name was Ray Gardea. There were a couple of
girls in the amateurs that were real good
freestylers, April Hoffman got eighth place and
Michele Sanderson did pretty good, too.
By the time the freestyle contest started I was
getting really sunburned from sitting there all
day but these guys kept skating. There were still
hardly a crowd in the bleachers.
Well, it was hard to follow the scoring but
there were four of Tive guys that looked good
enough to win. Primo, the guy with the sky

hooks, almost dances on his board, he was fun
to watch. Kevin Harris skated to his music really
well and was spinning like an ice skater, kinda..
The third place guy was from the east coast, his
name was Reggie Barnes, I liked his style. I
couldn't tell who got first, there was some sort of
mix up with a timekeeper or something. Jason
Catalano did a lot of hard tricks and stuff but Per
Welinder looked like he had it more wired until
he fell off a couple of times. Maybe he had an off
day or something. Anyway Jason won his first
pro contest which was pretty cool.
I didn't stick around for long after 'cause my
dad wanted to go to the beach but when I get
back home we're gonna have a lot of skatin' to
