Andre Gerhard plants off the produce at a
favorite skate/skarf spot.
Fast food restaurants, food machines,
quick type markets and gas stations are
some of the most popular skarling estab-
lishments used by skaters. These places
provide a narrow selection of highly over-
priced junk food. Candy, soda pop, micro-
wave food, and clove cigarettes are about
all that's on the menu at these places.
Even "yours truly" is sometimes forced
into a quick shopping jaunt at the local 7-
11. Fruit juices and a few healthy snacks
such as nuts and one of my favorites, the
traditional chips and salsa, are about all
that's on my list when shopping there.
When buying the chips, opt for the salt-free
type, and most salsas aren't pumped full of
preservatives, so they're all right. Add a to-
mato, avocado and bean dip, and you've
got a killer meal. Try it.
Next time you're out looking for a cheap
meal, hit the local grocery store. You're
hardly ever far away from a grocery store.
Now don't visualize yourself pushing a cart
around for two hours. With a little thought,
you can breeze in and out in less than five
minutes.
Make sure to bring along your skate (I
guess I don't have to tell you that) because
ultra-smooth floors are the trademark of all
grocery stores. Now if you don't get kicked
out for doing a foot plant off the turnstiles,
head directly for the Produce section.
There's a lot more to the Produce section
than onions, potatoes and carrots. There
are all sorts of fruits available year around.
Produce is very inexpensive in comparison
to pre-packaged "skarf." For about a buck,
you can buy a gut-filling snack session right
out of this section. When was the last time
you had a peach, pear or apricot? There's
no plastice to deal with, you just eat it and
throw it away. Hey, it's biodegradable.
There's more to grocery stores than just
the Produce section. The Dairy section is
okay, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're
craving some high energy levels "a la in-
stantaneous. Milk acts as a slight depres-
sant and is hard to digest, Milk is also fa-
mous for plugging up your nose and throat
with its mucous-inducing properties. Make
sure you do the milk-thing every day, but
not during your skate session.
Next stop, the Bakery session. When
shopping for bread, make sure you buy the
whole wheat variety. White bread is practi-
cally valueless as food. Those Wonder
Bread ads are deceiving, so don't pay at-
tention. Most bakeries have day-old bread
which is always a bargain.
While cruising the maze of isles, beware
of the gimmick foods found on every shelf.
A good example of a gimmick food is the
"Pac-Man pasta in spaghetti sauce with
mini-meatballs." The only reason I see for
this type of prodduct is to calm down the
young video junkie after all the arcades are
closed. From what I've heard, Pac-Man
eats little radiation emitting diodes, not
spaghetti. This stuff is packed with preser-
vatives, coloring, sugar and salt. This crap
is not recommended. I wouldn't even wish
this food on the famed Texas Dogfood
Eater."
When heading for the check-out counter,
avoid the candy-type bars. These impulse
buying items are just what you should be
avoiding in the first place.
