            SPEEED ZINE
FORMAT: 5 x 7
Steve Caballero's graduation from his original SKATE PUNK
magazine to this one has seen a transition from a real slick
publication to a real gnarly one. Cool record reviews by Billy
Midol and other articles like "Gossip and shit...", "Slam Time,"
and "Gnarly Transitions" speckle each and every issue. Lots of
skate shots stolen from the THRASHER offices and cool band
photos. Good 'ol Steve charges a quarter for this one..
NO LIP MAGAZINE
FORMAT: 5 x 7
This rag from Santa Barbara, Calif., consists primarily of
freestyle skating. Graphic arts major John Dettman includes a
creative approach to ragazine production in this rag of his. Clear
photos make this one work.
SKATER OF FORTUNE
FORMAT: 8 x 10
One of the best 'zines from San Jose, Calif. With lots of photos
of local shredders. Although it's supplied with drawings by Lance
Mountain and the layout is pretty cool, it could use more reading
matter, but there's swell coverage of the Box, the Bricks, Cab's
ramp and the Dolphin pool.

UNITED SKATES OF AMERICA
FORMAT: 5 x 7
A ripping skate rag from Columbus, Miss. With plenty of
material. It includes: Skating in Florida, local skate spots, record
reviews, party report, cool cartoons, extra and much more. Good
overall layout and creative insight make this rag one of the best
out. Coverage of cool dudes Steve (Krud), Dan Van Dermark,
Lindsey Kuhn, Smack, Jake Meggers and Billy Pierce.
THRASH AND TOOL MAFANGAZINE
FORMAT: 5 x 7
Who'd believe a rag of this caliber could ever come out of
Maili, Hawaii? A total positive thinking zine, the cover states the
contents as being; "San Francisco-a vacation, Shopping Tips,
World War and lots more." Put together by Jocko, Pop, Ed, Rick
Tanner, Mike Black, and Rosetta Tarantino, the zine features a
variety of articles on the horrors of war in a very educated
manner, utilizing facts and figures, it pinpoints Nicaragua,
Grenada, Lebanon and various other areas of social value. The
centerfold features in big bold letters, "AND WE SKATE," a
couple of skate shots over a field of photos of dead bodies,
soldiers carrying wounded buddies, and mushroom clouds. At
least some kids are conscious. Hooray for this rag.

AIR SKATEZINE
FORMAT: 8 x 10
Put together by Grant Brittain, AIR SKATEZINE is published in
Solona Beach. It features killer fotos of the likes of Steadham,
Ruff, Jim Alesi, Bill Billings, Howard Hood, Roskopp, etc., at
various locales. The only editorial in this only issue is an
interview with Mark Rogowski. This zine gets an A+ for visuals.
ROLLING PAPERS
FORMAT: 5 x 7
Don't let the name confuse you. This skate rag from Oak
Ridge, Tenn., is packed full of local contest coverage, interviews,
etc. The overall layout is fairly good, although the xeroxed
photos are somewhat blown out. Editor Joe Bowers and his staff
seem to have a worthwhile mag here. Lots of creativity. Locals
featured: Lyle Donoho, Ray Underhill, James Creigh, Brian
Bat Mite, Wendel Elrod, Britt Parrott.
VERTIKAAL Magazine
FORMAT: 5x7
One of Sweden's most impressive mags as far as layout and
artwork are concerned. Ripping action photos give this mag a
brilliant appearance. Excellent coverage of Sweden's local
contests. Too bad it's written in Swedish. It's probably funny.
STREET GRINDER
FORMAT: 5x7
This is a fairly good rag out of Harrisburg, Pa. Brought to you
by the local crew of skaters. Although most of the photos are of
themselves, editor Tim Ulsh, Mike Welker, and others supply a
good photo-packed issue of their local skate scene. Mostly street
skate photos and some local kickturn ramp.

DOWN SYNDROME
FORMAT: 5x7
Here's an adequate mag from the Downey brothers of
Franklin, Ohio. It's not too big in size and it could use some more
content and creative layouts to it. Photos are too dark but the
effort is good. S.L.U. crew Tom Beefmaster, Steve Greenewell,
Bat Mite, Marc Schroeder and Laclede bank are some of the
locals covered.
SPUNK SKATEZINE
FORMAT: 5 x 7
A rad zine out of Rehoboth, Delaware, by Jim Tesnar and
crew. Ripping photos, record reviews, outstanding illustrations,
and a red paper cover. Mike Strassner, Todd Fischer, Scott
Werny and Jon Geurts featured along with ramps and banks.
DIRTHEAD RAG
FORMAT: 5x7
This small but pretty cool rag from Monterey, Calif., contains all
local action. Very, very dark graphics, decent photos and not
many pages. Heavy Granite Ramp coverage.

EDO SKATEMAG
FORMAT: 8 x 10
This mag from Springfield, Va., seems to get better with every
issue. Its past issues have included: The Annandale Ramp
Contest No. 2, interviews with Tony Magnusson, Pat Clark and
Kona local Gene Foresi. Cool photos are featured throughout
every issue.
STOP SKATE HARASSMENT
FORMAT: 8 x 10
Here's a Christ-centerd skate/punk zine from Fresno, Calif.,
done entirely by Matt Dunlap. Behind the large color cover is a
zine consisting of 70 pages packed with huge photos, interviews
with the Necros, Negative Approach, and Pariah, record
reviews, and much more. The overall layout is clean and
consistent as well as the photos of Delmar, Upland, Kona,
Fresno and various ramps. Scene updates of Boston, Oregon,
Virginia, the Rockies, Indiana, and Washington, D.C., are
crammed into this zine of many pages as well as J. Crawford's
hippy type comix. Towards the back pages there is a nor-cal
radio programming directory for alternative music and a fanzine/
skatezine directory of many different rags that are available in
the U.S. There was lots of hard work by one individual to put this
zine out.
