ASK THE DOCTOR
Dr. Rick Blackhart
THE KNEE, ALWAYS, THE KNEE
Since I've been off board these past
few months with a recurring knee
sprain I think it's a good time to start
taking a closer look at some of the more
common, skate injuries.
There are two common types of skate
related knee injuries. One is the
stretched ligament variety, the other is
the more severe torn ligaments. With a
stretched ligament condition you'll ex-
perience a little swelling and a lot of
pain for at least a week, you'll want to
stay off your board for a solid month of
recuperation. If you've ever experi-
enced the torn ligament, or "Croft" syn-
drome, then you must know it involves
excruciating pain along with swelling of
the tissues, fluids (water on the knee)
and most likely some scalpel action to
get you back into just pedestrian shape.
To skate again it may take 6 months to a
full year to recover. Even then you're
lucky if your knee regains 100% of its
former capacity.
NO STICK NO CASH NO THRASH
Doctor Blackhart,
The past year has been treacherous.
After getting into skatin' about a year ago I
saved my money two months to buy a
board but a little while later I broke my leg.
I was laid up for three very boring months.
Finally I was released from my wicked cast
and back on my board. This happiness
would last only for a short while 'cause a
month later my beloved stick was snatched
from within my own garage. This really
sucked. So Rick, if you have any advice as
to how to obtain a skateboard, please
respond.
Thanks,
Michael McBride

Mike, I know exactly how you feel. I
also had my board ripped from my gar-
age one time. But hey, c'mon, what can I
tell you. These things happen. Actually
the reason you have this problem of no
board and no money is because some-
body else HAD the same problem. They
just solved it by ripping your board.
Now I'm not telling you to go steal
someone else's board. Because anyone
that can't find some way of getting a
stick besides ripping it off is a total
chump. I guess you'll just have to face
reality and start saving money for
another board. You did it once, do it
again.

Dear Doctor:
At the beginning of the school year my
school outlawed possession of a board on
school grounds during school hours. That
gets me pissed.
Also I don't dress like all the clones, so
some people think I'm strange, maybe I
am. I don't care.
But the real reason I'm writing is because
my friend and I used to go skating together,
but then disaster struck. His board got rip-
ped off, now with the combination of the
lame rule and Mike's lack of a board I don't
skate much anymore. Any suggestions on
the lame rule or Mike's no board factor?
Don't let the clones get to ya.
Thanx,
Pete Brownell
Sebastopol, CA
You guys from Sebastopol are going
to have to get it together, first Mike's
bummed because he's got no board,
and you're bummed because you've got
no buds to skate with. So help the guy
buy a board, and you'll both be satisfied.
As for the no boards at school rule,
well, it figures. As soon as kids start
having fun, the clamp comes down and
it's all over. You could try and approach
the powers that be at your school to ex-
plain skating to them and try to work
something out, you know, tell 'em it's
your only transpo and how healthy skat-
ing is for the mind and body. You'll prob
bably be wasting your breath on deaf
ears though 'cause as we all know: skat-
ing and authority don't mix.
