makes Annandale (D.C.) and Tom Grohoski's ramp seem

completed the ramp this August so it's still rather young. We

Here's an old photo that might interest
your readers. The skater is Mark Conahan,
editor of BODYSLAM. The photo is by Tom
Huckabee. The ramp ca. 1982 (May) was
built by a surf-hippie named Tim Sample in
the outback west of Portland, Oregon.
Basically the ramp was an eight foot wide
by 18 fo
I foot diameter half-pipe with a full
bowl at each side/end. In other w words a
capsule ramp. The transitions were very
good. Drop in chutes that could be closed
off or left open as mini-canyons, vertical on
the halfpipe above the bowl and countless
lines for speed made truly manic air-lines
possible (see BODYSLAM #2). Carves
too as the photo shows.
Anyway, rumor has it the ramp was
razed. The landlord was cool enough to let
it happen in the first place but Tim moved
and the 11. didn't want none of them
strange lookin' punk rock types comin'
round. History.
