A young Powell amateur, Adrian
Demain has progressed faster in the
last few months than any skater I've
seen since Caballero started skating
at Winchester Skatepark. This guy
was pulling four foot spacewalk airs
and has a style much like Billy Ruff.
He took a respectable fifth in the com-
petition, but I'm sure he will one day
be the best.
Another surprise was Dave Bedore,
a powerhouse skater for Uncle Wig-
gley. He was fearless and skated with
command to take fourth. Third went to
Hans 'Puttis' Jacobsen. This Swedish
skate-star has been talked about by
every top American pro from the Euro-
cana camp. He proved himself with
some bionic maneuvers. The battle
for first was waged by the two stars of
the Powell Amateur Team: Kevin
Staab and Eddie Reategui. These two
skated with Pro calibre runs. Staab, as
smooth as silk raged every inch of the
pool taking second while Reategui
blasted to extreme heights pushing
every maneuver well past previous
limits to nab the chief position.
All the awards were doled out and a
huge buffet style feast, compliments
of the Hawks, was next. After the fes-
tivities a few nubile young females
were spotted on their way to a New
Year's Eve party at one of the sur-
rounding apartments. Beau, Grant,
Bob Kingpin, Bob Breaker, me and
others followed them to the party
where more young women and beer
were found.
As the beer flowed, the crew enter-
tained the lovelies with Lucero-style
breakdancing that looked like an
epileptic fit. The neighbors downstairs
soon ended this party due to the noise
made when yours truly started hitting
full tucked back loops and slamming.
The party moved to a huge (and I
mean gigantic) New Year's bash at
some surf-rasta house in Cardiff-by-
the-Sea. There was one policy at this
party: Keep skaters out! There was
only one policy with the skaters: Scam
your way back in!
Most who couldn't get in went down
and skated Sanoland Trench which
was about two blocks away. I awoke
in a hotel room, hurray! It's 1984, and
I don't know how I even got there or
who I was with. Then I saw Valerie and
I knew I was alright.
In Denny's that morning I stood on
my seat and removed my trunks. I was
only trying to get the waitress's atten-
tion, but the phony Coors mirror be-
hind me had a giant peephole and the
manager saw me, so half of us were
kicked out while the other half hid in
the women's bathroom.
We all ended up at the skatepark
again in just enough time for Jeanne
Hoffman to drive us to the airport.
On the plane I made a few New
Year's resolutions. I vowed that I
would never party myself into a stupor
again. Instead I would do something
like I did last year when Rob Roskopp
and I held a religious ritual in which we
chanted to the Misfits by candlelight in
dark robes and at midnight ceremone-
ously shaved GSD's two-foot long hair
down to a skinhead.
The plane touched down in Skater-
ville. I was glad to be home and I was
quite thankful that I hadn't had to drive
the porcelain bus.
