TWO STEPS AND A DIVE...
I'd just like to take a few moments
to tell everybody how much my
friends and I love skateboarding and
to give encouragement to those up
and coming little skaters. Like for
example, just the other day we were
at Arby's, and saw this cool 5 foot
block fop bank with a guard rail at
the top. We skate it for a while,
showing off for some high school
girls, then I try a "death drop" off the
guard rail, hang up on a hidden
something, and hit the lower lot at
1,000 mph (no pads, humuh?) Why,
even earlier that day. Dan dropped
in on this brutal snake run, the kind
that looks like cemented over shag.
and has boomerang transitions,
hangs up on a loose piece of co-
ment, and POW!!!, one super slam.
Or the time we were downhilling in
Arizona on this madman hill (Desert
Jewel) which has a 30 mph, 90
right-hander at the bottom, well, Dan
and Tony were jammin' the hill cool-
ing off after a pool session some-
where. Dan made the line but Tony
couldn't cut it. Two big steps and a
dive into a cactus. Better than hitting
rocks, isn't it? The cactus blew apart
and he kept going anyway. It was
awful (no shirt or pads). Or when J.
snapped both wrists because his
front truck fell off. Or the time
when...well, that's how much we
love skating. We always will.
WANTED-RADICAL
RAMPAGE

Detroit, MI
of my buds from school are starting
to get into skating, and are picking
up some pretty RAD boards. We
thrash pools, parking lots, and the
local drainage pipes. This has given
us new goals, and has also brought
our friendships a lot closer. I hope
that anyone out there who is not a
serious skater will get into skating
more, and surely become a so-
called "Hardcore" skater as I am. So,
if you're afraid to get into skating, be-
cause you are afraid they will make
fun of you, f--k 'em! Go out and get a
board, and you'll see, they'll get into

NOT HARD-HEADED
I'm a 16 year old skater from
Berkeley. I've never written to you
before, but now I feel it's imperative
that I state my views on skating and
how it coincides with punk. Some of
my skatemates feel that if you're a
skater, you have to listen to
hardcore, and if you listen to hard-
core you have to shave your head. I
agree that high energy tunes are
needed to enhance your skate ses-
sions (ie., The Specials, The Eng-
lish Beat, Motorhead, Accept, etc.).
Hey, I'm not puttin' punk down. I
listen to it, and go to shows, but I
think everyone should have some
variety.

CATCHING "AIR" FORCE
I am currently a landlocked surfer
who is calling out for "HELP"
I am from the East Coast and
have surfed it all of my life, up until
now. I am serving Uncle Sam in his
Air Force. After I accepted the fact
that I am no longer in an area of
which I can surf every day (wreak
havoc). I am an avid skater ob-
sessed with the much speculated
surt/skate synthesis. I found skating
to be a far more radical sport than
your common waveriding can ever
be (unless all you surf is 20 feet
North Shore).
I am in my mid-twenties and have
rolled with the ever changing state
of-the-art in LINE-UP. Skating is the
only solution to allow myself to main
tain my surfing qualities.
What I am asking of you good
Hey, dudes! Coming to you from people at THRASHER magazine is,
Portland, Maine, definitely non vert-through a personal letter or by the
cal territory up here. There used to mail drop, to enlighten me on some
be a 10 foot deep pool, but the of the rumors I have heard. I was told
bureaucrats got mellow and leveled by someone that there are other
it. I really need to catch some bio military bases which have halfpipes
vertical air, but due to a lack of skate on their premises. Can you verify
able territory and the white stuff, I'll this by listing the name(s) of the
need to wait until next spring. Any military installation which has one?
one with info on where to get gnarly PLEASE give us your cooperation.
in New England should let me know!
THRASHER, keep up the very in-
tense work on your mag. I would be
lost up here in Moose Country with-
out your constant updates.
Stay Radical,
SERIOUSLY

Here in Groton there's nothing but
lame squids who think that skating is
a fad that died years ago. Sure skat
ing was hot in the mid-seventies, but
us hardcore skaters will always re-
main. We have an eight-foot quarter
pipe and are in the process of build
ing a rad halfpipe; we also hit local
skate spots like the "Garbage bowl
and the Tunnel, where we thrash to
skate tunes like The Clash, U2, and
the DK's. On weekends we some-
times go to R.I. and skate Rick Ross
halfpipe in Narragansett or go to.
Newport and skate with locals there.
Last weekend we went to a halfpipe
competition in Dighton, Mass., where
everyone totally blazed.
Stalled inverts and channel ollie
airs were the rage. A few hardcore
bands including Vicious Circle also
played there.

P.S. Attention skaters in the Con-
necticut area. Let us know who you
are. Let's get together for an aggres-
sion session.
STOKED, BUT STUCK
I'm sitting in my bedroom ground
ed, so I finally got off my board to
write a message from Tulsa, Okla-
homa. Our skate population is start-
ing to grow. For a while it was getting
bad. There are only about 10 skate
or die locals.
We have a park but it is infested
with two-wheeled terrors day and
night. But then came along a Mr.
Johnson who built a ramp with flat
bottom and quick transition. We now
have daily sessions (well I used to).
Now what we need is a real skate
shop for people from Norman and
Tulsa. The cover of your October 83
got me way stoked.
May THRASHER's years be many
Yours vertically.

COOL HOT SPOTS
Skateboarding is getting more
popular but so is surfing so there are
more surfers than skateboarders.
No one is really Punk (hair styling
that is), but, like me, there are a lot of
punk fans. Punk rules and that's no
lie! I've been to Del Mar Skate Park;
it's pretty radical! My brother skated
it at night. Sorry, no pictures. Oh
well, keep up the good work with
your Mag!

Well, it's about time someone set
you guys straight about the skate
scene here in the Mass. area. There
are nice ramps with 8 to 10 feet of
flat, roll-in channels (4 ft and 3 ft).
PVC coping, etc. Not to mention the
Cambridge Pool, Mole Bowl, City
Hospital bricks, and the Vat Bowl.
Next year there is going to be a way
cool backyard series here including
ramps from Montreal, N.H., Mass.,
and R.I. Also hello to Lofo, Nor-
mand, Brent, Ying, Anthony, Eric,
Scarhead and all the crew up in
Canada. Had a great time last sum-
mer.

Just wanted to say you guys have
still got the hottest skate mag
around! Here in Downey we've been
finding some pretty cool street spots.
and ditches, since Skate City closed
its doors about a year ago. Places
like Target Ditch, China banks, Spider
Pool, Soloman's Pool, Gann's ramp, This is from the rad E.C.L. Boys in
and R.S.G. Oasis have sprung up. I Connecticut. We're living proof that
had a quarterpipe but tore it down, skating is alive and well over here.
and I'm planning to build a cool mini-E.C.L. is a bunch of chilly, brown,
halfpipe which will go in my garage,
Gann's ramp is being made into a
smaller ramp with about 12 feet of
flat bottom. And we're planning
another cool ramp at my friend's
house. We've been sessioning Spi-
dey's Web, too, off and on.
Well, gotta go now.

drinking guys who thrash with ma-
chismo. We skate anything, but we
prefer mainly vert. Some headbang-
ers burnt down our last halfpipe but
we're going to build an even better
one (bi-level, 16 feet wide with plat-
forms on each side). We have start-
ed other people in town on skating
and there used to be another skate
club called C.L.S. (wonder where
they got the idea?) although they
split up, they still have an okay half-
pipe. We thrown down to funk and
have plenty of juice. Our presence is
well known and we're easily recog-
nized with our C-dogs and ber-
mudas. When we finish our new
pipe we'll send some hot pictures, to
prove that skating thrives over here.

I'm a 12 year old girl who is trying
to get into skateboarding. I'm what
you could call radical on skates but
skateboarding is funner. My brother
is a pretty radical skateboarder. My
friend has a brother who built a half
pipe and she and I skate on it every
so often. We're just starting out so
we're not all that good. I've been to
Devil's Pit but have never ridden in P.S. Hope Jeff Lewis in Texas sees
it. I'm going to though.
