ASK THE DOCTOR Dr. Rick Blackhart
Hey, what's HAPPENING, HAPPNANG,
HAPNIN, HAPPEN IN'! Ya know, it's
funny sometimes when I realize that
there are some of you out there that are
bummed at my trip and hate me, just be-
cause I say what I want. Maybe some
people can relate to what I say, and
maybe some of them can't. Maybe some
think they know better and maybe some
think I don't know shit.
Anyway, the funny part is that here
they are telling me they think I suck but
they've taken the time to sit down, write
me a letter and some more time to go
mail it. Anybody that's going to spend
their own time to think about some-
thing, then actually write it down on
paper and send it in to me, is totally cool
no matter what they say in the letter.
Hey, I really don't care if in the letter
they think I suck. I'd probably think they
sucked too. So what, at least they did
what I wanted them to do in the first
place. I mean there are other guys who
write for the mag and they can be so
much more full of shit. But they don't
even know because no one cares
enough to write them a letter (although
I'm good friends with almost everybody
who writes for the mag-they know who
they are-and some are better writers
than others) but...I get letters. Yeah, I
get letters from all over the world, just
because people want to hear my views
and ideas. Those are the letters that are
happening. And you know what? The
skaters who are writing those letters
(some are even non-skaters) are what's
making skating happen, whether they
like what I say or not.
So if you got your own views on skat-
ing, or questions about...whatever...or
even if you want to say, "I can relate to
what you're saying," do it!
REMEMBER, the key to this article
is feedback. So, just keep the letters
flowing.

TALKIN' 'BOUT MY GENERATION
Doc,
Could you tell me why practically all the
1st generation skaters such as yourself,
Peralta, David Hackett, Kevin Thatcher,
Kiwi, T.A.....(I could go on for years) have
dropped out of the competition scene?
Seems pretty ironic to me because the
world's top sportsmen and athletes are in
their late twenties early thirties while a lot of
you innovators of your so-called by-gone
days haven't theoretically, reached your
prime. Most of you of timers have shown
your potential in Hester Series etc.... com-
petitions of half a decade ago. Not forget-
ting, at that time, you guys were ripping on
impossible decks of 7, rollerskate trucks,
and sludge wheels in some of the world's
most savage pools.
So my message is c'mon, get serious
and rje-live those times you once thought

I'm talkin' money Jack. That's why-
money. How do you think the top
sportsmen and athletes (as you call
them) are able to put the time and effort
into what they are doing? Money. Do
you seriously think that any skateboard
manufacturer, or any other skate related
company is going to fork over enough
money to support some twenty to
twenty-five year old skater, who is living
on his own with an economic situaton?
I'm talking live on skating? Especially
when there are hundreds of kids coming
up that skate constantly and could care
less about money.
The skate world of today is not the
same in a lot of ways as it was back
then, skating was so new and innova-
tive, anybody that got near skating was
stoked to the brim. People just loved to
crave skate stars, and to have skate
stars, the bucks had to flow. Once you
were used to the bucks, and you're skat
ing good and sponsors are craving-
what happens? Some fourteen year old
punk comes along and bumps you right
out. I mean here's the sponsor thinking,
"Man this pro sure is costing some
money and this kid skates pretty good
and doesn't even want money"; who do
you think they're going to keep?
Speaking of competition, there have
been very few contests pulled off in a
decent manner, not to mention the judg-
ing. Seldomly has the skater that should
have won, done so. Having my own first
hand experience in judging. I realize
how hard it is to judge fairly and evenly.
With all these considerations to be
made, the bottom line is, you're trying to a
put skating (or skaters as it were) on the
same level as, let's say, football or ten-
nis stars. If I was making a million or
more a year, you can bet I'd be into com-
petition. So don't try and tell us older
skaters that we're missing out because
we don't skate in competition. We don't
need it. We're having plenty of fun just
skating without the other bullshit.
ON THE MOVE
DRB
Well, I can't complain about your
magazine, that's for sure. You do a good
job. I'm a relatively new skater and up here
in Minnesota (I started skating and bought
a board in California) we use different
terms for tricks. Could you please explain
each of these words for me and my
friends?
Ollie, ollie pop-up grinders, grinds, slid-
ers, rock-n-roll, fakie, and maybe a list of
other stuff for freestyle, vert and rad stuff.
Thanks,

I am an amateur skater from San Jose. I
was a member of the now famous Win-
chester Skate park. At the park and in your
mag. I have come across some words or
terms which have totally baffled me and my
friends. I am hoping you will be able to an-
swer or define these: "he's happening."
"ollie," "fakie," "bio," "egg plants.
Well, thanks a lot R.B. and for all of us
here including Stevie Caballero, "San Jose
is definitely happening.

It really doesn't matter what label you
put on a move, because there are so
many different variations on a theme.
By the time you learn a move, it's called
something else. If you can pull it off, do
it, and don't worry about what it's called.
