METAL EDGE
IRON MAIDEN
Piece of Mind
Capital Records
Padded cell insanity. A loboto-
mized, chained psycho fronts the
Maiden's fourth slice of blistering
metal that has kerranging combustion
combined with wailing melodies. Mur-
ray and Smith's sledge hammering
axe dominance continues to diamond
the flamboyant nucleus of Iron
Maiden's metal attack. Strong im-
pressive hard-hitting licks of fiery in-
cineration, with clean twangs shrilling
in precision and prominance, défiantly
piercing delight into the cranium. Be-
coming fully recognized for a sheer
hard edged tonsiling protrusion, voc-
alist Dickenson climbs high in
exhilarating harmonies that fully cap-
tures the ear drums in a sonic stam-
pede. Colossal numbers; "Flight of
Icarus," "Die With...and "The Trooper"
bring Iron Maiden to a new height of
barnstorming strength, making Piece
of Mind a superb vinyl deliverance
with an extraordinary cover depiction
by Derek Riggs
WILD DOGS
Shrapnel Records
Screaming at you from Portland,
Oregon, sending invasions of striking
guitar screeching by axe man Jeff
Mark, come the phrentic Wild Dogs.
Paralytic doses of metallic rock
exploding outwards with barbarian
throat schreaks dominating this
alarming ensemble of tight, straight
forward metal mayhem. Attacking
tunes sliced into the vinyl, ooze forth
the butcher's choice cuts, "Life Is Just
A Game," "The Tonight Show," "Never
Gonna Stop" and "You Can't Escape"
Wild Dogs produce a storming
power for those who love it hard and
fast, an exceptional debut lp. P.O. Box
"P, Novato, CA 94948.

MERCYFUL FATE 12 EP
Rave On Records
Four-song 12 from Denmark's
Mercyful Fate, who are second only
to Venom in the Satan Sweepstakes
of the metal neanderworld, thrusting
chords within a structured format.
along with plenty of lengthy, lyrical
lead guitar lines, provide the musical
backdrop for King Diamond's highly
unusual, wailing, lead vocals. Though
this disc contains only four songs, it
clocks in at over 22 minutes without
ever descending into tedious redun
dancy. Great stuff, whether you're into
drawing pentagons or not Look for a

EXCITER
Heavy Metal Mania
Shrapnel Thunderbolt Records
Simply amazing onslaught of elec-
trifying mercurial metal This is the first
LP in some time to completely bow!
me over through sheer indomitable
might Exciter are a young trio from
Canada, who in many respects are
North America's answer to Venom
with the main differentiating factors
being a better produced (though
hardly sterile) sound and less reliance
on the Satan n' Sodom stuff for sub-
ject matter. This is a vicious, unrelent
ing blitzkrieg of incisive mayhem, that
has to be heard to be believed.
Guitarist John Riccci heads up the
galloping tempos, with rapid, slashing
riffs interspersed with concise, manic
leads, while drummer Dan Beehler.
keeps pace with some mad, pounding
backbeats, and he sings all the lead
vocals as well! Nothing less than an
awe-inspiring debut
ACCEPT
Reckless and Wild
Heavy Metal Worldwide Records
Most recent, and best yet release
from Germany's Accept 10 volatile,
storming cuts, featuring a vociferous,
twin-guitar racket, from the senses
shattering brilliance of the opening
track, Fast as a Shark," and through
out the length of the album, Accept
prove themselves to be one of the
world leaders of mad, merciless,
heavy metal. This isn't quite as over-
whelming as, say, Venom or Exciter,
but that's pretty sacred territory to

MOTORHEAD
Another Perfect Day
Bronze Records
Guitarist and producing master-
mind Fast Eddy Clarke has gone on
to bigger and better(?) things, but
Motorhead continue on regardless.
and now that this, their first disc with
ex-Thin Lizzy axe man Brian Robert-
son filling in, is on the shelves, the
question is: Are Motorhead still the
raw metal-mongers of the world, or
has time passed them by? Well, this
undoubtedly begins a new era for the
band they've even tampered with
their longstanding logo (albeit only
slightly) and they sure do look a whole
lot cleaner (based on the front cover of
their latest 45) Robertson's guitar
playing is pretty clean too, but gener-
ally, though there are a few excep
tions, he fits in fairly well and, as any
follower

more melodic and emotional than pre-

musical approach Not my favorite
Motorhead LP (the uninitiated should
check out the live No Sleep Tell Ham-
mersmith for the band's finest hour).
but an okay effort nonetheless
ROCK GODDESS
A&M Import
Just when it appears that
Girlschool may be headed along the
Pat Benatar route, along come Rock
Goddess, an all-girl trio from Eng-
land, to fill the void. Make no doubt
about it, this is derivative of their men-
tors, and by hiring Vic Male (the)
school's first producer), the clone tag
was quickly nailed home. But Maille
got everything nearly right this time
soundwise (a debatable point with his
previous efforts), and there s plenty of
strong material here which allows you
to forget about meager compani
sons-this unquestionably stands up

rhythms dominate this first-rate disc.
with Jody Turner's raging guitar di
recting and stimulating the forcefull
attack. Not earthquaking original in
content, but highly energetic and en
joyable, and ultimately very much de-
serving of your attention.
