CASL #3
PALMDALE RAMP
7:00 am. After a long night of the
usual pre-contest activity. I was
awakened by the sound of a ringing
phone. "Is this Mr. Stephenson?" the
voice on the other end demanded.
"Uhhh!" I moaned, still asleep. "This is
Joe-Bob Johnson and I live just down
yonder from y'all's skateboard track.
What the "ft5 is goin' on there
today?" "Contest" was all I could
mumble. "Well, your skateboard
friends is parkin' in mah front yard and
smokin' and takin' off allah their
clothes right in from of.mah wife's
eyes. "Tell her to close 'em then," I
said as I ended the conversation. It
was going to be a long day.
So began June 11th, the day of
C.A.S.L. contest #3 held at the infam-
ous (soon to be history?) Palmdale
Ramp, the 100+ temps during the
week leading up to the contest made
for some heated sessions, to say the
least. Moves worth mentioning in-
cluded egg plant channels, vio, 12 to
8' transfers, 50/50's into the canyon,
and 5+ airs. The-intense heat also
caused many skaters to be victimized
by leg cramps. One person who shall
remain nameless had cramps so se-
vere he ended up on someone's front
yard in one large knot. While he was
screaming for God's merccy, the oc-
cupant of the dwelling stepped out-
side, and convined that I had just at-
tacked him, threatened to call the
proper authorities. I quickly explained
the emergency situation we had and
she thankfully responded to the vic-
tim's needs with some ice water and
salt. Needless to say, this person re-
covered because he won the spon-
sored division the following day. Did I
give it away? Sorry, Kevin.
The contest ran real smooth, thanks
to C.A.S.L's staff of hard-working par-
ents and other interested parties. All
sponsors' banners were hung in vari-
ous locations around the ramp, includ-
ing the Del Mar crew's entry, a "Kids
Eat Free" banner, stolen from an un-
disclosed restaurant the night before.
In between keeping the porta-toilets
upright and calming irate occupants of
these toilets, I failed to catch most of
the results. I do remember that in the
3A 16 & over division, heavily favored
local Steve Lawrence dislocated his
shoulder (again) in practice and was
out of contention.
The sponsored division was where
the skating really heated up as five or
six skaters were in the running for the
first spot. Kevin "cramps" Staub stood,
walked (?) away with the top spot by
putting in a flawless run, throwing in a
Caballerial just as his time was up.
"Stagoo Sieadham was above the
ramp more than he was on it, which
put him in second place. Jeff Grosso
took third with his high-scoring hand-
plant channels. Fourth and fifth spots
went to locals Gregg Godfrey and
Keith Stephenson, respectively. Owen
Neider looked to be a threat, but was
soon out of the running by executing
such low-scoring maneuvers as
throwing your board at a judge (nice
catch, Jim) and yelling profanities to
the same. As the contest came to a
close, the skating kept right on going.
Jim Gray, who was there to judge, got
on the ramp and after a few bails
found himself with a nail gash in his
ass, which he displayed to various in-
terested parties. One by one, the cars
slowly emptied out of the yard, and as
the sun set over Palmdale, another
contest had become history. Til next
time, remember this piece of grafitti
found scrawled on the ramp: "This is
the future, so don't "t it up!
