HERE'S A POEM:
The True Skater
Well I'm a skater yes siree
I'm always shredding when I'm free
I rip 'n' tear the streets apart
Cause I'm a wild man by heart
In the bowl I'm like an ape
I wipe my ass with grip tape
Well people try to stop my kind
So, something's wrong with their mind
They fill a bowl when there's a chance
And tell us to tear down our ramps
They crack down on my ilk each day
But they'll never take our boards away
The only time they'll get my deck
Is when I'm dead and buried to my f**king
neck!!!

CONTRIBUTING RESPONSE
This is in response to December's issue
article "Metal." I'd have to agree that
there's only a small gap between punk and
metal, as far as the musical quality goes,
but I think you should have at least
mentioned that punk stands for a hell of a
lot more than just the music part. It's a
whole attitude, an understanding of the
pathetic world. I mean, let's compare some
Girlschool lyrics to Dead Kennedys. Even
with Black Flag's lyrics (a less political
sort), it's still realistic; whereas the metal
stuff is fronting this whole unrealistic,
ritualistic, image thing. I haven't been
involved with punk for nothin'.
Punk (I think) is real life aggression
towards ignorant happy-homemakers with
cute little mailboxes and nuclear bombs
with red polka dots. Not to mention nice
cowboys in the presidency. Well, enough
yelled, just thought I'd throw in my opinion.
Speaking of mailboxes, I've included
some artwork (the cartoon and maildrop
head), it'd be intense if you used it. If you
do plan to use it, I'd be real appreciative if
you wrote me back (I've included a
stamped envelope) and told me when,
what issue, or what you plan to do. I don't
have a subscription yet and no easy
access to a distributor. Also, if you need
anything, artwork or whatever, mention it.
Tom Groholski, what's your address,
that ramp looks insane!!! The photograph I
included is of me, photo by Butch Paulson.
The halfpipe is torn down now 'cause
Butch went off to college. The college I go
to, SUNY at New Paltz, has the mighty
thrashable cement but it's got snow on it.
My new ramp's in the planning stages. I
skate here by myself but wail anyway. The
"360 layback flip" is a trick I learned or
almost learned before we tore the ramp
down; someone send pics in if you clear
one! THRASHER is insane; "Pushead" is
fabulous, skating is the ultimate, and punk
continues to hate. Feel free to shorten this
if you need to...sorry. You guys oughta
hold a little mag cartoon contest.
Sincerely thrashing,
Dirte Ovellette

Thanks Dirte. Your criticism is the best
kind because it's full of suggestions and
ideas, not cry baby stuff. As for the rest
of you, check out Dirte's artwork on Pg.
32 for some inspiration. T-ed.
