If you haven't heard THE STRAN-
GLERS since the Black & White
album, watch out, you'll be in for a sur-
prise. Continuing a trend started with
their last album, "La Folie," slower
songs and lush melodies prove you
don't always have to scream to be

SOCIAL UNREST'S first EP was
brilliant. Their new seven-song 12"
"RAT IN A MAZE" continues their
mighty stand against society. Power-
ful, proficient and unmatched, each
song speaks strong and cranks out
first LP, was hard to follow and No. 2, unsuppressed ferocity. Totally killer!
"October," did not meet the challenge.
"War," U2's third album, is one that
can stand orf its own. Strong playing
and straightforward anti-war lyrics
highlight this latest effort by Ireland's
most valuable export.
BOW WOW WOW
When the Going Gets Tough, the
Tough Get Going (RCA)
The title of this LP is a mouthful. I
think they should just call it Bark!
BWW's third LP brings us more of the
same subject matter, "Aphrodisiac,"
"Do You Want to Hold Me?" "Love
Me," "Mario," you get the idea.
Spiced up by ace producer Mike
Chapman (Blondie, The Knack), this
LP is recommended for undying fans
only. Otherwise, take BWW's advice
from their first single (C30, C60, C90
GO), tape someone else's copy and
save the $8.98.

These guys have changed their
names. Have they changed their out-
look? No! Songs like "Psycho

(has come today) and "Little Bit o'
Soul, make the RAMONES the
greatest band in America and "Subter-
ranean Jungle" worth buying.

RANK AND FILE
You've been skatin' real hard 'n' fast
all day with the boys down at the
ramp. It's quittin' time, you've come
home with a few of the gang to settle
back, maybe pop a few sodas and re-
lieve the long day's sessioning. Now,
what tape are you going to punch into
the portable blast box that's been,
cranking rampside all day with!
everything from J.F.A. and Minor
Threat to the Nuge and AC/DC.
Well, try out this new release from
Rank 'n' File. More often than not con-
sidered to be a country band, Rank 'n'
File, consisting of brothers Chip and
Tony Kinman (on guitar, bass and
trading vocals respectively), Alejan-
dro Escovedo, guitar, vocals (Alejan-
dros' name showed up in "Notes from
the Underground" Vol. 1, No. 3, back
when played with premier S.F. punks,
THE NUNS), and Slim Evans on
drums. The various backgrounds of
the players, who now call Austin
Texas their home, provide Rank and
File with a no frills, simple, guitar/
rhythm sound that's not too hick.

The Big Boys are one of
THRASHER Mag's favorite bands.
Their 6-song EP, Fun, Fun, Fun...." is
a soulful, funkful, punkful effort. This
album covers a broad spectrum as far
as musical tastes go, but one could
expect no less from these four guys
from Austin, Texas. The Big Boys got
together because of skateboarding.
and they say that they would much
rather skate than do anything. This
might seem hard to believe for some
because of the obvious attention and
energy put into their musicianship on
KT "Fun, Fun, Fun...."
For foot stompin' tunes, check out
Amanda Ruth, I Went Walking, and
Coyote. "Rank 'n' File... there's no de-
nial."
Biscuit, the lead vocalist, is a giant,
but in actuality he's as gentle as hell.
On Hollywood Swinging, an old Kool
and the Gang tune, he gets people rol-
ling and in live performance invites
certain audience members to join in
on the chorus. Apolitical is fast-paced.
"I don't care El Salvador can blow it-
self right off the world/and Reagan
there with all his plans/is just another
yes-no man." This is just another
example of the growing concern of
youth over their well-being. The title
song, Fun, Fun, Fun... is a great slam/
thrash/swivel tune that's even good to
sing along to.
I'm a punk and I like Sham

Even though that's not
what I'm supposed to do.

what they say

some anyway.

thrash enthusiast. Buy it and check

Dischord Records presents seven-
teen songs of tremendous energetic
intensity and zealous, explosive
momentum-this is SCREAM. Not
your basic thrash, but fast straightfor-
ward melodies of various irresistable
diversified forms. SCREAM's unfet-
tered euphoria detonates a poignant
ensemble of brutally outrageous num-
bers like the opening cut, "Came With

this exceptional black slice of persis-
tant exuberance. "Solidarity," "Human
Behavior," "Influenced," and "Total
Mash" are just a small sample of high
quality songs SCREAM has strikingly
well produced. A provocative release
full of quick, glass-shattering stormers
and resplendent determination that is
a bonafide winner. $5.00 from Dis-
