CG: Getting away from music, what
about the real you? You're getting old,
some say a has-been, what about it?
SA: Well, I act like a hard guy on the
outside, but I'm really a real nice guy on the
inside, a real tender-loving guy when it
comes down to it. I care. And if I wasn't like
that, Fausto wouldn't ask me to be his
son's godfather. I am old. My knees are
shot. It's just hard to skate anymore
because I work all the time and go to
school. I'm not in as good a shape as all
the younger guys are. I already have
arthritis, and my knees are shot, they hurt
when it gets cold.
CG: Do you think there is anything
more radical than skateboarding, that
you could've done?
SA: Nothing is more radical than skate-
boarding. Football stinks, basketball
stinks, every sport stinks, even skiing.
Surfing too. When you fall on the concrete,
you feel it. And what's more radical than
falling 12 feet onto your head and getting
57 stitches? Then coming back and
skating a contest the next day and getting
third place.
CG: What contest was that?
SA: Pipeline.
CG: What don't we know about you?
C'mon, tell me, fess up.
SA: You don't know what kind of guitar I
have.
CG: Okay, so how long have you been
skating?
SA: Eight years now.
CG: What kind of guitar do you have?
SA: Steve Alba Bevel Model. It's 30%
inches long, 10%wide, with a six-inch
concave on it. And it doesn't hold water.
CG: What were the SKATEBOARDER
poll banquets like?
SA: They were fun. A time to go be with all
the skateboarders and put 'em down and
get drunk and get belligerent, dress how
you want and raise a bunch of shit. It was
better than a high school prom, more like a
Mafia meeting. All the heads of the
companies were there. Like the bourgeoisie.
CG: Were you very interested in sports
while in school?
SA: My first year I was. I played football
and all that stuff. Then I said, that wasn't for
me. Skateboarding was it instead. That's
why I skateboarded because it was way
cooler. And it wasn't so much peer
pressure of having to be macho man.
CG: Did all the chicks crave and flow
back then or did they think you were an
idiot?
SA: They thought I was way cool. Lots of
chicks wanted to flow at the skatepark.
You know how skateboard groupies were
back then, it was cool. They liked to do lip
slides, inverts, frontside grinds, backside
grinds, tail stalls.
CG: Who do you think is the hottest
skateboarder today?
SA: Me, if I skated.
CG: Next to you?
SA: My brother. He's the only one left out
of the whole thing that knows how to skate
at all. Duane still skates, he's pretty cool,
but otherwise all of the other skaters suck.
I want to hear them cry.
