¡HUM!
ANS
ENQUIRIES BUT NO SOLUTIONS
FACELESS EMPTY ILLUSIONS
REASONS/ARE ALWAYS PUSHED
ASIDE
REMEMBER THE DAY THE
COUNTRY DIED.
The last verse of the song "Black &
White" on the SUBHUMANS new LP
The Day the Country Died. The SUB-
HUMANS, on Spiderlegs Records
(CRASS), are the best straightforward
"Harsh Band" in the known world.
Unleashing to those that matter,
and those who'll listen, the SUB-
HUMANS provide us with 16 fero-
cious, thought rendering cuts, which,
in their own individual right, carry com-
plete visions of the dark side of soci-
ety. A position most people tend to ig-
nore or are just too stupid to realize
how hard they're being stepped upon.
Those who are most offended by
thoughts along these lines are usually
the ones who are doing the most step-
ping.
One song, "Big Brother," starts off.
with a scream, "Here We Are in a New
Age! It goes on to describe the au-
thors' ploy to warn the people of mind-
control type "1984" stuff at the end of
the song
WELL, THEY ASKED ME HOW TO
PROVE IT
AND
AND THERE
WAS NOTHING I
COULD SAY
I SAID
WATCH OUT FOR
BIG BROTHER
AND THEN THEY PUT ME AWAY
SAID I WAS PARANOID
THESE I WROTE THIS SONG
BECAUSE
BUT THEY DIDN'T NEED TO
READ IT
BECAUSE THEY KNEW IT
ALL ALONG
New Age seems to take the stand of
pointing at the man with the gun, as
the lyrics speak for themselves:
SO YOU'RE LIVING IN A
FAST WORLD
SEE THE PEOPLE YOU'VE
ALREADY KILLED
SEE WHAT YOU'VE DONE WITH
THAT MACHINE OF YOURS
YOU
CAN'T JUSTIFY IT
YOU AIN'T GOT NO CAUSE
YOU A
Then the chorus states:
T'S ONLY CAUSE WE'RE
LIVING IN A NEW AGE
YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE
LIKE WHEN YOU'RE IN A RAGE
THEY'RE GONNA PUT YOU AWAY
IN A CAGE
YOU BETTER START TO ACT
YOUR AGE
In the song "I Don't Wanna Die,"
Dick, the voice behind this fantastic
band, sings an opinion of a paranoia
of the system. Behind his words, pre-
sumably are the thoughts of "Why
can't I live my own life and follow
through on my personal endeavors
without having the government pick
up my life and moving it, where it may
very well end for their own gains or
fears?" He says:
THEY GAVE ME A GUN
AND TOLD ME TO RUN
DEFEND YOUR COUNTRY
FROM THE ATOM BOMB
THE DAY. THE COUNTRYIDED
I SAID WHY?".
AND THEY COULDN'T REPLY
THE SYSTEM KILLS
BUT I DON'T WANNA DIE!
The words to this song probably
floated through many a young man's
mind in the U.S. during the Vietnam
War days, and no doubt rung in the
brains of those young men from Eng-
land who, under Maggie Thatcher's
panic, were thrown into a bloddy con-
flict nobody wanted. What about our
brothers in Lebanon? What do they
think? What purpose are they serv
ing? There'll never be peace there.
Never really was and most likely never
will be.
Another song, simply titled "No,"
counters against all the things you get
shoved down your throat that no one
bothered asking you if you wanted. It
states:
NO, I DON'T BELIEVE IN JESUS
CHRIST
MY MOTHER DIED OF CANCER
WHEN I WAS FIVE
NO, I DON'T BELIEVE IN
RELIGION
I WAS FORCED TO GO TO
CHURCH AND I WASN'T
TOLD WHY
NO, I DON'T BELIEVE IN THE
POLICE FORCE
POLICE BRUTALITY ISN'T
A DREAM
Then it goes on to give the point that
every brain-washed geezer tries to
confide, cope, and understand with:
DON'T WORRY YOU'LL GET OVER
YOU'LL GROW UP, YOU'LL CALM
DOWN..
YOU DON'T REALLY MEAN
WHAT YOU SAY
YOU'VE HAD TOO MUCH TO DRINK
DON'T BE SO FULL OF HATRED
IT'S NOT AS BAD AS YOU THINK
This sounds a bit like the Steinbeck
novel Of Mice and Men, where the
smart friend George had to kill his fee-
ble-minded companion Lennie. A dif-
ferent situation but it was the coaxing
of someone who doesn't know better.
The song turns again and comes back
with:
NO, I DON'T BELIEVE IN WHAT
YOU SAY
YOU'RE JUST PART OF WHAT
DESPISE
YES,
YOU'RE PART OF THE
FUCKING SYSTEM
I AIN'T BLIND I CAN SEE YOUR LIES
THE
GNOR STEM THRIVES ON
WHAT THE PUBLIC DON'T KNOW
THEY CAN'T REJECT
IN THE FACE OF YOU ALL
ISTAND DEFIANT
THE REST OF THE PEOPLE,
THEY WANNA FORGET
That gives a brief feel of the direc-
tion of what the SUBHUMANS are.
Their music is hot and ferocious.
Another big asset is the lack of dead-
air between songs. The songs flow
distinguishably from one into another
without interruption. If you can't ap-
preciate this band's distant outlook,
then you must want to die.

NEOS
Welcome once again to the Pus
Zone, where maniac scribbles
amount to a sentence and scraping
needles din forth this month's bom-
bastic best!
Unrestrained exertion traveling at
exhilarating speeds of emergence
explode into mind-boggling doses of
uncontrolled euphoria as this three-
piece Canadian band roars into 14
staggering slices of fervid intensity.
Hasiba Gets the Martian Brain
Squeeze, the second EP by the Neos,
delivers-powerful piquant lyrics, abra-
sively garroting away social pillories.
Guitarist Steve shears away the flesh
of his fingertips as his hand is but a
blur on the strings. Kev frantically
plucks unrelenting quakes of pugna-
cious bass lines, supercharged by
A.B.'s split-second spasmodic drum
emanation. All three share vocal
capabilities, with sometime chaotic
overlays. The Neos, perhaps the fas-
test in the world? $2.50 from Steve,
1706 Mortimer St., Victoria B.C.,
CANADA V8P 3A8.
Recently becoming a powerhouse
for glass-shattering bands, Boston
unveils yet another classic! Kill For
Christ, the F.U.'s non-hesitant nine-
song, 12" platter of invincible clamor-
ous furor. An explosive attack of fierce
unfettered velocity devastates the
nervous system with a lightning fast,
bulldozing barrage of hammering
electricity. Civil Defense, Me Genera-
tion, and F.U. triumphantly display
high adrenalin thrills of resplendent ef-
fervescence. On X-Claim Records.
$4.00 from 45 Lydon Way, Dorches-
ter, MA 02124.
Dischord Records continues again
and again with repeated success, this
time with the rougharsed rabble-rous-
ers Iron Cross! This tight-driving four-
song EP of raw shimmering vigor
cranks out brutal, blistering vehe-
mence grating strength and determi
nation. Raucous vocalist Sab Grey
throats across harsh larynx raspers
like the mighty Psycho Skin, and the
rumbling provocation Crucified for
Your Sins. Bombard your skull with
this boisterous brain bomb on Skin-
flint/Dischord. $2.50 from 3819
Beecher St. N.W., Washington, DC.
20007.
Absolutely a pyrogenic inferno, the
Head Cleaners (Huvudtvatt) from
Sweden cavort the mercury as the
Farenheit thrusts upward lashing cha-
otic charges of fiery cremation. This
seven-song Disinfect EP thunders
rambunctious oscillation, frizzling with
momentous cuts like Dying in Maze,
Kill the Royalties, and Over the Wall,
ravaging sheer havoc and intense, im-
petuous vitality! An outrageous dis-
covery. $4.00 from X-Centric Noise,
