DEAF SKATER
Dr. Rick Blackhart,
Dr. Rick Blackhart
ASK THE DOCTOR
Paul Hoffman, staying loose and staying on at Whittier.
I'm glad that I got your THRASHER mag
since Action Now was out of business.
Now, THRASHER mag is number one and
it's best so far. Hey! I will be moving up to
the Bay Area and ripping places. I'm look-
ing for skating spots in the Bay Area. Have
Milpitas and Winchester skateparks sur-
vived? Are they open? Your photos are
super rad, keep it up with all your work. Jay
Adams is back on the street scene. Jay's
interview is way out!
I'm a deaf skater and I want THRASHER
mag to do an interview on deaf skaters,
they are rad and bio! Do you guys know
skating spots in the Bay Area? Please give
me as much information as you have.
Malcolm Martin
Fresno, CA
No. Milpitas and Winchester have not
survived. I've never liked parks or
thought of them as being the ultimate
skating, surrounding. They never
seemed to create the proper atmos-
phere for aggressive skating as it
should be. As for skating spots in the
Bay Area, just like anywhere else, you
must seek out and destroy, rather than
wimper and wait.
As for skateable terrain, you're gonna
have ta find a ramp, a pool, or your spill-
way/reservoir type skatescape. Other-
wise, if you think I'm gonna divulge any
secret type, highly confidential informa-
tion about what and where to skate in
the Bay Area, you're dreamin' Jack!.
I think that the time and effort of going
out and finding and cleaning a spot to
14
skate gives you a sense of pride or that
you have earned the right to ride that
spot. If you have the opportunity to
come across a spot through communi-
cations with other skaters, especially in
a new area, and are able to just walk up
and skate with the locals, then you
should be considered fortunate.
In other words, if you're gonna skate,
you're gonna have to pay some dues,
whether it be searching, building, in-
quiring, trespassing, cleaning, bailing,
driving, pilfering, slandering, conning.
bribing, scamming...whoa! Anyway,
you get the idea.
Now that parks are gone, it's not
gonna come easy anymore and thus, it
will breed a more hardcore skater. It
sounds like you've paid some dues and
we'll be hearing from you whether you'll
be hearing from us or not. Thanks for
writing in, and adding yet another exam-
ple of the true skate attitude prevailing
over all else.
HEAVY SYNDROME
Mr. Blackhart,
I'm coming to you from the Northwest
where the skating is hot and growing, not
dying. What I want to ask you is, why is it
that when you're skating in the streets or a
curb, there's always some high society
dwip there to tell you to go somewhere else
and play? I'm serious, they say "play."
What do you do? I've found crushing their
skull with my deck isn't the answer. I say, "1
was just havin' some fun."
Also, I sent you a cartoon about this guy
we know who crashes wherever he goes. It
never fails, even though he's ridden the
same place for a month, he's still crashing.
Maybe if he sees it in the mag he'll decide
to take skateboards seriously, and realize
that they're not made for people to get hurt
on. He sees us skate, we don't get hurt
though. He just can't seem to realize it, he
keeps trying but it seems that there isn't
any way to tell him how to skate. I thought
that the mag could put a heavy syndrome
on him and he'll start skatin' on instead of
off.
Louis Waterbury
Seattle, WA
You say, "F-k you, you high-society
dwip, don't tell me where to play. I'll play
on your face." No, really, you just got to
realize that they're getting down on you
for skatin' because they never skated
themselves. They're living their lives re-
gretting not having fun, while you're out
there creating it. You gotta figure you're
doing something that those types can't.
comprehend.
About your friend, you gotta tell him
that, to skate you gotta fall. I mean, it's
like walkin', if you trip and fall, you gotta
get back up and keep truckin' or else
you'll never get anywhere.
Which brings up back to skating.
don't get down on the guy just because
he falls. Because then you're just like
the high society dwip telling him what to
do. If he's skating and falling and still
skating, then maybe he has bigger balls
than you do. He must be having fun, and
he's pushing his limit. Maybe you
should take a look at a yourself and be
less quick to judge others. "Nuff said."
FRIENDS AND FEES
Dr. Rick,
I've been ridin' skateboards since I was 5
years old. I am now 15. Up to about 77
things were going great, but in '78 and 79
skating seemed to have died. The only park
here closed. My dad and I built a small half-
pipe and I even started my own skate team
but a few weeks later it broke up and they
turned to BMX. Since then I have given two
of my boards to my friends trying to get
them back into skating. But now they want
to sell them back to me for $50.00 each.
Can you tell me what I can do that I haven't
already done to get them skating again?
Andy Gatley
Santa Rosa, CA
Well, I'll tell ya, if you needed some-
one to skate with bad enough that you'd
stoop so low as to give your boards
away, maybe you'd better find some
new friends. Anyway, if they think that
BMX (hack, cough; I hate to even say it).
is what they're into, then obviously, ska-
tin's not for them. As for the $50.00
bucks, forget it. Just go ahead and build
another ramp and I guarantee they'll
come skating back, and when they do,
just charge 'em an entry fee to skate.
There you go.
