            CHERRY LANE
RAMP CONTEST II
Saturday, October 23rd was the set date
for the Cherry Lane Ramp Contest II.
Skaters from 5 states made the long trek to
compete. Practice started as soon as
everyone wanted to. Which was way too
early for me since I didn't get much sleep
the night before. A few of us cruised up to
the local MacDonald's for breakfast to wolf.
down the assorted so-called foods.
Around 10:00 a.m. everyone was
skating in the damp musties, but it warmed
up a bit near high noon. Basically everyone
was ripping it up. I decided to get the
goings under way around 2:00. The first to
go were the unsponsored. This would
definitely be hard to judge because all
these guys were flailing so heavily. There
were 11 entrants so we broke it down to 8
skaters that went head to head. Looking
hot were: Jeff Kendall, Paul Hugeson,
Marty Jimenez and Lyle Donohue. These
four made 1st through 4th respectively.
Probably the most ripping move was pulled
off by Paul Hugeson. He demonstrated the
stalled lay-back air, leaving people in awe.
When it came down to the finals it was Jeff
Kendall against Marty Jimenez. Jeff at the
beginning of the day was making backside
airs about 1 foot out and worked his way,
by the end of the day, to 3 foot plus. Truly
amazing. Both skaters had exciting runs,
ARIZONA RAMP SERIES
OF SKATEBOARDING
(ARSOS)
This contest was held on Sept. 25, 1982.
The ramp was built about three years ago
by Mark Cady, Todd Joseph and Kevin
Staab. It was built in some people's back
yard who finally couldn't stand the blaring
of DKs, 45 GRAVE, etc., and also the
noise of numerous slams and shouting.
The ramp was moved by about eight
skaters who decided that the constant
bitching by the people at the house wasn't
needed. It was moved a couple of miles
away to where it is now. It has been at this
place for about a year and a half.
Saturday, September 25, 1982. The
contest was to start at about 3:00 with
practice starting at 10:00. New masonite
and coping were put on Friday to make the
skating better. The ramp is 16 feet wide,
about 38 feet long with 18 feet of flat and
10 feet high. There is cement coping on
both sides and rollout decks.
12:00-At this time there were about 20
people at the ramp. Practice was going
pretty good, no snaking or heavy slams.
The J.F.A. crew showed up with them
came a bunch of Phoenix skinheads who
call themselves the LJ's.
There was going to be four classes: 1a,
2a, 3a, and semi-pro. The semi-pro class
was cancelled because Sam Esmoer and
Kevin Staab were the only ones who were
going to be in that class so they decided to
do crowd tricks between each group.
By the time the contest started, there
were close to 80 people watching and
skating, there was also a good array of
but in the end Marty Jimenez, (SKATE
ATTACK Editor) again for the 2nd time
ripped to 1st place.
Next came the sponsored skaters.
There were 5 entrants, (3 of them from out
of state) and to make things fair three of the
unsponsored skaters judged. Four of them
went head to head, one getting a bye.
Riding into 5th place was Marty Beaudoin,
(Sims & Tracker) falls had hurt him all day,
but he did pull off some blazing tricks.
Ripping into 4th was Ray Underhill
(Schmitt Stix). Ray flailed lien airs all day
and extended inverts. Third was taken by
Bill "Mr. Hate" Danforth (Madrid). Bill pulled
off 360 degree front side airs, leaving the
crowd speechless. Second was snagged
by Walker Boy Brett Martin, he ripped all
day long with hardly any falls. Coming in
first was Rob Roskopp (Madrid).
Last, but not least, was the Highest Air
Event. Bails are very common in this
event. Everyone went for the maximum
height. Jeff "Mr. Consistant" Kendall
looked like the man to beat, but in the
finals, Jeff tied for 2nd with Marty Jimenez.
After the contest there was a party in my
basement which lasted out the night with
an unusual drinking game that left some
people in another world and brought others
back to reality by GETTING SICK!
All in all, The Cherry Lane Ramp
Contest II was a big success. There will
definitely be more in the future.
hot-looking scams.
The 1a class started at 3:15 with about
12 skaters in that group. The judging was
handled by Sam Esmoer, Kevin Staab and
Todd Joseph, along with Eric Reinfreid.
Keeping track of the scores was Garron
Hale whose house the ramp is at and John
Haas who also handled the mike and the
music.
The 2a class was started at about 4:00
with practice first. There was going to be a
best slam contest and Brian Brannon, alias
creature/singer of J.F.A., took some gnarly
slams and was most likely to win that
event. Staab and Esmoer put on a good
show with Sam's 6 ft. plus backside airs
and varials, Staab was doing extreme fakiet
ollies and Caballaerials to axle stall.
Some of the LJ's showed up with some
brews and proceeded to get baked. The air
was filled with clove smoke. One of the
LJ's tried to scam on some of the girls
watching and one of the girls came back
with a polite "eat "tt§ and die." The LJ was
very depressed at that comment so went
and started a spit war with some of the
other LJ's.
Sam bailed from a sky high backsider
and his board continued on and caused
one betty immeasurable pain in her lower
leg. The skatographers were getting in as
many shots as possible, with a wide angle
fisheye lens.
The 3a group started at 5:00 with three
skaters. Mark Cady, alias Marcus Welby,
M.D., didn't show because he said he had
to work, but we all know about Jenny Lou.
I asked him how she was and he just
responded by saying, "Gimme a dip o' that
there Copenhagen." The three skaters

were Jim Gossett, Garron Hale, and Eric
Reinfreid. Reinfreid was the first skater
and he tore up the ramp, his run was
flawless. Jim Gossett was next and had an
all right run with pretty good scores;
Garron Hale was next and his run was
about the same with about the same
scores. On the second runs Reinfreid tore
again, Gossett hung on a fakie rock 'n' roll
and slammed heavily. Garron started out
with a good run but bailed from an invert
and his board landed on the deck so he lost
time running back up to drop in.
All day Todd Joseph had to be the comic
and give extremely high scores of 80's and
90's. Brannon got the highest score for
best slam, a 99. Chants of hardcore,
hardcore were coming from the LJ's as
their crew skated.
There were to be prizes for each class;
first, second, third and fourth places were
given in each group. Various skate
equipment was given out, boards, shirts,
trucks and wheels. The prizes came from
all the different skate companies.
All in all every one decided that the
contest went pretty smooth even though
the ramp does have to be moved.
Who knows, later on there could be an
A.S.O.S. #2 after the ramp is reorganized
and resituated.
There are some plans being made to go
to the top of the Scottsdale City Council
and confront them with plans to build a
skatepark.

everyone who was involved in this contest.
