Beau Brown
Hutson/Blackhart-The Doctor wasn't
having one of his better days, qualifying
16th, he was to race against the Hut, who
qualified 1st. Blackhart's comment: "I had
him on the push, I had him through the
turn, and then the "tt§o passes me!!"
Glen Wood/Perry Fisser-The Wood
brothers, Glenn, Scott, Dan and David,
were all primed for Capitola, having played
host at a much faster race, the Bellevue
Open, the week before in Seattle. Glenn
set the pace early with a win over Perry
Fisser from Huntington Beach. Speculation
about whether or not the "Duck's Ass
Whale Tail" streamlining incorporated into
the Wood bros. speed suits was making a
difference.
Beau Brown/Mike Goldman-One of the
most intense and exciting match-ups of the

day, even without Goldman's slide 'n' roll
across the finish. Beau, from H.B., had
been posting fast times all morning,
qualifying seventh, beat Mike in the first
race. When BB began to pull away slightly
from a surprised Goldman, the veteran
local downhiller went down in what looked
like a mad lunge for the tape. Goldman's
comment: "I was leaning off the nose for
more forward momentum and I just leaned
right off the front of the board."
Scott Wood/Randy Katen-Katen
stayed close but couldn't figure out a way
to overtake the heavily streamlined Wood
brother.
Roy Wakeman/Covey Bauman-The
"not a Wood" portion of the Seattle
contingent, Roy Wakeman nonetheless
employed the same fairing/speed suit
Gerry Hurtado with victor John Hutson; grateful, but
revealing no secrets.
technique in fending off a charge by Covey
Bauman, who had traveled down from
Calgary, Alberta, Canada, for the event.
Roger Hickey/Bob Denike-Most
wouldn't have entered but here was
Denike with a full cast on his right arm
going up against the always tough "Kid"
Hickey. It may have been too much to
overcome as Bob ran off a bad line at the
start of the first run and on the second run
he fought Roger through the turn but
couldn't tighten it up behind Hickey's
speed through the bottom.
Caedman Bear/Tim Piumarta-Known
for his work around the Santa Cruz
stables, Tim Piurmarta came out full force
against Caedman trying to get out front
early and hold on. But the sleek and fast
Bear chose his lines carefully and twice
diced past Tim on the lower straight.
Marc Aley/Chris Pettyjohn-Aley had
one of the strongest pushes away from the
start and virtually outweighed the smaller
Pettyjohn in this heat between two veteran
Berkeley, Ca., street racers.
By now, the sun was high in the sky and
the crowd was at peak enthusiasm, yelling
for their favorites and calling for more
speed. The quarter finals were no
disappointment:
Hutson/G. Wood-Hutson continued his
domination of the lower part of the course
although he lost his only race of the day on
this round. But made up for it with a faster
time in the next race to win.
S. Wood/Beau Brown-By now the
ducktail speed suits and the wide board
techniques of the Wood brothers had
become a reality to contend with. Hickey
teammate Brown couldn't find a way
around it but pushed Scott Wood to the
fastest recorded time of the day (25.8284)
on one run.
Wakeman/Hickey-Likewise Roger
Hickey who couldn't stay in Roy's
streamlined draft.
Bear/Aley-Another Berkeley boys'
match-up saw a wheel-to-wheel tie on one
run. Nobody could call it so the two
returned to the top for a rematch which was
won by Caedman.
The heat was on and the field had been
shaved down to four remaining speedsters.
Hutson had a tough two races against
Scott Wood but managed to get by him in
a close heat. Caedman Bear against Roy
Wakeman proved to be nothing less than
spectacular as Wakeman laid it down
across the finish line only inches behind
Caedman's board. After a consolation
round for third place in which Scott Wood
beat a somoewhat torn and tattered Roy
Wakeman, the final race began.
It is always in the finals that experience
pays off. John Hutson continued to play a
waiting game through the turn as he had
been doing all day. Coming past that last
hay bale and in full "Hut Tuck" position,
John was already in passing gear and held
off Caedman to the finish line.
For the third year in a row John Hutson
had won the Capitola Classic. Don't ask.
him how he does it 'cause he won't tell you,
but, please, somebody come out and beat
the guy next year. That's the challenge of
the Capitola Classic.
