Skating still lives in the Northeast,
and every summer since 1975, all the
mad dogs crawl out of their caves to
shred whatever they can for prizes
and glory. This year was no exception,
and the annual affair was run at a new
location, a black-top parking lot with a
built-in somewhat vertical terrain. It
definitely was a bit crude and dirty, but
right in line with what today's skate ro-
dents rip on.
Since all the great parks have gone
the way of the bulldozer-notably
Centrifugal Force in Seekonk, Mass.,
now a Dunkin' Donuts, and Ocean
Skate in Warwick, R.I., now a ware-
house-rampagers and bowl thrash-
ers have been quietly cultivating their
new moves in backyard pipes and mu-
tated street terrain. This contest sur-
face offered the vertical skaters the
opportunity to show flashes of bril-
liance, be they ever so brief, along
with the always difficult flat-ground
freestyle. The Eastern Surfing Associ
ation, annual contest organizers, col-
lected over $300 in prizes and
trophies from notable supporters,
which enticed many to attend that
would not normally skate in an
organized contest.
it was clear from the onset of the
warm-up session that the hottest com-
petition would be in the Junior and
Men's events. When Mike Paugh
began his freestyle routine by jumping
a full-sized Toyota, the crowd began
to stir. His shin connected with the
front fender on the first attempt, but
the second jump was clean. Combin-
ing that with several strong tricks, he
easily topped the field in the prelim
heat. The finals proved to be a lot
toughter, as the top three were de-
cided by fractions. Steve O'Hara
showed the right combination of style,
fluidity, and radical aggression to
squeak by Paugh in the last session.
The Men's freestyle final was the main
event, featuring the battle of the un-
beatens. Neither Art Gracey or Gary
Southwick had ever been beaten
since 1975. But neither had ever had
to skate against each other. In the end
it was Southwick's repeated array of
dazzling 360's and head/hand-stand
combinations that edged Art Gracey's
definitely more radical and aggres
sive...but not quite as smooth and fluid
routine. Both skaters proved far
ahead of the rest of the field, however.
Gracey's innovative style included
one especially long knee wheelie.
The other high point of the contest
ensued in the Junior Vertical Terrain
event, which took place on the crude
tar between the loading dock of the
local supermarket and the fly-infested
garbage bin. Rich Ross, who virtually
owns the terrain, put on a great show
of clean air moves and upper dirt bank
re-entries. O'Hara's lightning fast ver-
tical 360's and backside grinds and
power slides gave him the edge and
his second well deserved title for the
day.
At the conclusion of the contest,
and after the usual partying, our
Northeastern Cro-Magnans climbed
back into their auto-behemoths and
traveled back to their glacial caves for
the rest of the year.
The judges had a tough time in the
Men's Vertical Final. It was a close de-
cision that gave Keith Kimmel the win.
