PSUEDO PARENT
Dear Dr. Blackhart,
ASK THE DOCTOR With Dr. Rick Blackhart
I myself am not a skateboarder, but am
the mother of one very avid skater. My
son skates for about 2 hours every day
alone. Then he goes over to his girlfriend's
house and spends the rest of the day
there.
Now seeing as you are a psychologist
specializing in skateboarding, maybe you
could answer the following questions
A) What is the thrill of rolling around on
a skateboard?
B) What does it all mean?
C) When will he grow out of it?
Why can't he be more like me? Her
should find a natural high in everyday
things. Doing dishes for example. Every-
day a new ceiling-high stack always
arranged differently. Now that's thrilling.
Also watching my morning reruns is
always a turn-on. Figuring out the complex
plots of shows like Alice or One Day at a
Time is such a stimulating experience.
What's this skateboarding noise?
Irma Anna
Fort Washington, Long Island
Well, I'll tell ya, if you were my mom
you'd have been straightened out a
long time ago. In fact I can't believe
you actually have a son who skates or
if you are in fact a legitimate mother.
Of course nobody is gonna believe this
jive about doing dishes watching TV.
Now about the thrill or what it means
or when he'll grow out of it, you'll have
to decide for yourself. Every time I get
on my skate doesn't mean that I'm
totally thrilled. I do know I'm gonna
skate as long as I can get my feet on a
board. You should try it.
ISLAND BOY
Dr. Blackhart,
DRB
I live in a condo 8/10th of a mile from
Makaha and the first day I loved here I
attempted to skate the hill down. It's
exactly 8/10ths of a mile and a gradual
slope. Impatient as I was, I wore no
shoes, no shirt, nothing except shorts and
rode my LaMar (flat deck) with Krypto
65's (green ones) and Powell Peralta
Bones (64 x 57 yellow). These wheels
totally slide: The problem was I didn't
tighten my trucks all the way. I hit 20-25
and froze. I've never felt so helpless and
scared in my life! I knew that I would eat it
and there was absolutely nothing I could
do when I started getting the wobbles. I
shifted my weight to the front truck but it
didn't help. Next second I was sprawled
on the road with big scrapes on my body.
I have never gone this fast and I am very
inexperienced. I must admit though that
the speed was equal to pulling out of an
eight foot barrel! I want to attempt to go
down it again but first, I want to ask you
what board I should use (I have a Toft
9.0) and what wheels. Yes, I'll use pads,
shoes and an old jacket. This is a bit
lengthy letter, do what you want with it but
please answer it.
Thanks,
Rick Tarantino
Wainae, Hawai
First off sounds like you're discover-
ing the realities of hard asphalt, which
can be compared to the harshness of a
coral reef which lies under those eight
foot barrels you speak of. Your wobble
problem is obvious. Although experi-
ence always helps, equipment can be a
main factor. I like to ride downhill with
very tight trucks. I couldn't speculate
on what would be good for you since
everybody skates differently. Perhaps
tightening your trucks and getting a
board shaped in more of a downhill
mode. Also use a wheel that is more
resilient or soft to get a smoother
faster ride. And just in case all the
above fails, it sounds like you're going
to have to put away your flap jacks and
buy a pair of tennies not to mention
other protective gear to insure the
least amount of skin loss.
SKATEABILLY
Mr. Blackhart, M.D.,
mood for at the time. Many people
listen to certain music because that's
what they've always listened to. I like
to try and stay open minded, listening
to extreme varieties. I tend to lean
towards more agressive, up beat, loud
music. But that doesn't mean not
being able to groove with Al Green or
get raw with the Pistols, or even getting
down with ole Blue Eyes. It's hard to
put music into set categories because
styles change and fluctuate a lot.
Anyway, if you want to name names,
here's a small list just to give you an
idea of what I might listen to while
skating or just hanging out.

I am generally composed of DNA,
extreme skate material and an attitude
based on modern music. When I take part
in a heavy vertical session, I find it neces
sary to respond to musical rhythms. I
usually shred to an assortment of New
Wave, via Gang of Four and the Police;
Hardcore Sheens, B.F. FARTZ, etc...
progressive stuff like King Crimson and
certain ZEP tracks; and last, but not least,
Rockabilly, courtesy of the Stray Cats. My
question to you is what do you listen to?
It's OK, you can tell me, you're a doctor.
Please remain in an anti-gravitational
state.
