ASK THE DOCTOR
RAMP NOISE: GET
A WALKMAN...
Dear Dr. Rick,
What can you use on your ramp to
cut down on noise, like maybe
insulation. That may save some ramps
from being wasted.
Thanx.
Keith Spadafino
Kingsport, TN
The best way to cut down on ramp-
related noise problems is to start from
the ground up, when you first begin
planning the design. Here are some
observations and considerations; using
screws as well as nails helps. Nails
pull out, allowing the plywood riding
surface to "slap" against the bracing.
Adhesive caulking should be applied
as the plywood is laid down to dampen
vibrations. Coat all exposed areas with
sealing compounds to prevent cracking
and weathering. Apply wood siding all
around the framework and supports
(political campaign billboards work well
for this and are readily available on
most roadsides). The underbelly of the
transition area acts on much the same
principle as a speaker unit, throwing
blasphemous skate sounds all over the
neighborhood. Of course, the skater
doesn't notice because he is on the
inside of the ramp having a blast.
Besides, what skateboarder ever cared
about noise anyway. If the noise
problem involves just your own peace
of mind, go out and buy some head-
phones.
DEAD SKATER...
Hey Doc,
DRB
I was down at the V.C. Pool in San
Jose the other day and these Rats
were talking about some unknown
DEATH BOWL at a local cemetery
somewhere. I think they said something
about the 4th tomb on the left, but I've
checked every boot hill I could find and
couldn't seem to dig anything up, then i
I saw that photo in your last column:
are you trying to tell us that skating is
dead???
Baffled in the Barrio
Well, I'll tell ya, I don't actually know
where that photo came from, somebody
sent it in unsigned. I can't seem to
recall the incident at this time, but I did
have a bad nightmare around that
time. I think it's called "Sleep Skating."

WET SKATER STAY DRY...
Dear Dr. Rick,
How can you keep water out of
bearings or keep them from getting
ruined in the rain. I never stop skating!
Shawn McLean
Braintree, MA
Basically, the only way you are
going to keep water out of your bearing.
is by not skating in the rain, right? You
know what I'm talking about? You
know where I'm coming from?
Geez...Some people's kids. No, really,
check out Del 13's TALKIN' SHOP
(March, Vol. 2, No. 3) for all the rap on
bearing "wear and care."
As we move into the '80s, we are
once again starting to see old skating
standards shattered daily, only this
time it's in the non-controlled street
and urban environments rather than in
the sterility of the skateparks. Thusly.
we are seeing more battered boards,
burned-out bearings and broken bolts.
If you choose to skate in harsh
conditions, you can expect a faster
breakdown of boards and related skate
apparati
If you find that water in your bearings
is a problem (I know I don't), you're
going to have to get into some bizarre.
before-bedtime, bearing cleaning
rituals. A task that most skaters tend to
shine. If not then start out with roached
bearings, or better yet, use the ones
from the long forgotten, brand new pair
of rollerskates sitting in the closet. Or
hey do like I do and skate your
equipment until it falls apart, then get
new stuff.
CONFIDENTIAL TO "SHOULD
HAVE KILLED THEIR DOG IN
SURREY"...
DRB
It's not the dog that you want to aim
your aggressions at. The problem with
your neighbors seems to be rooted
much deeper than just the fact that you
have a skateramp in your yard.
Confront the inhabitants of said
household. If no favorable action
occurs, if hassle-free skating does not
seem to be a possibility, if it seems
that the death of your ramp is inevitable,
then you may have to (and I choke as I
write this) concede to the hassling
party. Remember, it's not the friggin'
dog that is causing your skate harass-
ment. My incident with a canine was
just an unfortunate accident, that's all.
