ZINE

STY ZINE
"Zine" is short for "magazine" so please don't say it like it rhymes with
"design" or "bin." It's ZEENI 'Zines have been around for ages in the form of underground,
small-run newsletters and pamphlets (think Benjamin Franklin!). When punk broke in the '70s,
'zines such as Sniffin' Glue were there writing about the Ramones, Dead Boys, and whoever
else. Skating and punk were rolling hand in hand soon after, and skate 'zines were poppin' up.
Some of the earlier, more well known examples are Skate Fate, Swank, etc. Thrasher started
out as a sort of glorified 'zine; check the first couple of black and white newsprint editions if
you doubt me. 'Zines were a big buzz word three or four years ago, but much of the hype has
disappeared, probably because the hype itself led to a plethora of crappy 'zines that flooded the
market. 'Zines are a killer way to spread ideas, talk about
your scene, show the world how killer your skate spots
are, turn your friends on to new bands, etc. Some of
them have become quite literary, such as Cometbus. I
started doing a 'zine in 1988 when I sprained my neck
skating. I took some photos, wrote some stuff, threw in
some stickers and graphics, and Pool Dust was born.
I'm still doing it because it's fun. Start your own mag!
And when you do, send it my way (PO Box 419, Tempe,
AZ 85280-0419) and if it kicks ass it might show up in
these pages in the future...

Mark "icki" Murrman
edited Maximum
Rock and Roll for
awhile, but long before
that he was doing a
'zine called Sty out of
Indiana. He's still doing
it, along with tons of
other projects. Sty #50
was a birthday present
to icki from his girlfriend Mimi. She wrote to all of his friends
and asked for stories about icki and put them in a mag. Icki
also did a 'zine called Action Four, a collection of photo
booth photos that's pretty neat. Send $3 to Sty, PO Box
11906, Berkeley, CA 94712.

Finally, the godfather of
fanzine-dom Aaron has
put out a new issue of
Cometbus. I have
watched it transform
from a standard format
'zine that was way above
the bar to, shit, can I say
it? Punk literature. Aaron
writes extremely well
and expresses such uni-
versal truth one can't
help but identify with
what he's saying. This
one is #47, and is closer
to the recent novel-type stuff he has been doing. I haven't
gotten all the way through it yet, but believe me it's the
goods. Send $2.50 to PO Box 4279, Berkeley, CA 94704...
Gnar Cal is a Nor Cal 'zine that's got the right kind of attitude: destroy
everything, take no prisoners, and laugh yer head off while doing the
above two items. Issue #2 features an interview with Pete the Ox and
Luis Martinez, a buncha pool photos and a story about a trip to the
Northwest. Write to 817 N 2nd, San Jose, CA 95112 for more info.
SOB
STORY
Sob Story is a photo 'zine ranking up
there near the top of shit I've seen
lately. Mostly punk bands but some
skating and other stuff, it's a dilly
wrapped in beer-case cardboard for the
cover. Write to PO Box 138273,
Chicago, IL 60613 for more info.
And for all you kids wanting some good
stuff to read to keep your mind in the
gutter, and since I am writing this on
March 9th, the seventh anniversary of his
death, I gotta recommend Charles
Bukowski. Still ruling it nearly a decade
later, there's some posthumous stuff out
there such as The Captain is Out to Lunch
and the Sailors Have Taken Over the Ship,
which are some journal entries he wrote
just before his death, illustrated by Robert
Crumb. That's all folks. Wez Lundry
