LEX "TRAINWRECK" GALL HAS CRASHED INTO THE MOUNTAIN
AR
and given up his amateur status to be Zero's newest pro. He's also joined up with
Matt "Mutt" Mumford to endorse and sport the new November clothing line. In
related news, Mums dropped Duffs to score a pro shoe deal with Globe.
Other upcoming Globe pro model shoe recipients
include Danny Gonzalez and Chad Fernandez, the
latter of which has embraced his new tax bracket sta-
tus with the purchase of a BMW.
The Leap of Faith death watch has been postponed
as Josh Kasper has been sidelined with a crippling
motorcycle injury. It seems that on a carefree Mexico
jaunt with a borrowed Harley, the Kasper slipped out
on some wet pavement, breaking his collarbone and
pelvis in the process. The Kasperholics are said to be
mourning, en mass, on-line.

In tune with the Republican-in-the-White-House
economic downfall destined to bring this country to
its knees a la Reaganomics, Converse has scrapped its
skate shoe division, sending the team sprawling.
Kenny Anderson has secured a spot at Adio (with a
rumored BMW SUV as a signing bonus) while Jerry,
Chany, Stephane and Ricky are as yet unaccounted
for. Felix "The Lix" Arguelles is said to be hanging on
at Converse, company man style, with eyes on a post-
career desk job.
In sponsor limbo, Danny Gonzalez has been seen
riding Royal trucks and Enjoi boards.
Droors has added the suave sophistication of
Louie Barletta to its amateur clothing team.
Other Droors ams include Stefan Janoski and
Greg Harris.

named Falcon. This new kind of skate company/mar-
keting conglomerate is said to include surf
legend Christian Fletcher as well as assorted moto-
cross types.
Black Label has added a bevy of fearless ams to its
already hearty line-up including Ben "Mickey"
Gilley, Ricky "Back dat Azz Up" Espinoza, Patrick
"Kill" Melcher, Wes Lott and Pat Smith.
Donny Barley is on the West Coast again driving a

Several rails have recently appeared chain-wrapped

BIRD MEN
much talk about the alleged physi-
cal altercation between skaters and
security guards at Australian X in
Melbourne. Nor about the status of
"the Australian X Games" as they
relate to the others. Renton Millar
was outstanding as a provocative
agent. Bucky Lasek managed to
stay clear enough of the conflict to
win vert. On the other hand, there
is much dialogue about the "esti-
mated forty-two million dollars in
economic impact" that the games
will have upon the new host city of
Philadelphia. Perhaps Disney/
ABC/ESPN will take this opportu-
nity to raise the skater's prize
money? Chris Lambert and Sasha
Steinhorst were sent to Phuket
Thailand for the Asian Junior X
Games. It was hot and muggy with
a large crowd for the clinics. Expect X qualifiers on five
continents as the marketing frenzy builds. Also be
assured that ESPN is working on a cheesy awards
show to bestow the Skater of the Year title right along-
side the Blader of the Year.

Tony Hawk was seen signing

landing after launching over a 24-foot channel on a
custom built stunt ramp. He also commissioned a set
of custom one-off snowboards with the graphics of
each of his pro riders on them. They were given to the
team as gifts. Predictably, this presumably innocent
act of generosity convinced many that Birdhouse is
going snowhouse.
Sea-borne paramedics were called to the 170-foot
long yacht of Puff Daddy in Saint Barts. The emer-
gency at hand involved one Glenn E. Friedman who
managed to cripple himself after jumping 35 feet from
the top of the boat into the water. Reportedly this bold
move involved a wager of some sort with impresario

Rick Charnowski and Buddy Nichols released their
latest film which documents the skateparks of
Oregon. Featured are the skater built community
parks of Burnside, Jacksonville, Talent, Ashland,
Medford, Aumsville, Lincoln City, and Newburg.
Interviewed are several of the denizens of the scene
including Mark "Monk" Hubbard, Mike Swim, Mark
"Red" Scott, Dogboy and Stephan Hauser. This film
comes out at an interesting time since the federal gov-
ernment and PARSAC are demanding that controls
be instituted and a standard be established for the
building of skateparks. The Rick and Buddy produc-
tion displays what can be accomplished when the
skaters are allowed to do it themselves.
The Skatelab skatepark and museum is organizing
an invitation-only Old School Skate Jam. Tentatively
confirmed skaters include Tom Inouye, Waldo Autry,
El Gato, Dennis Martinez, Neil Blender, Duane
Peters, Alan Gelfand, Pineapple, Mike Smith, Alan
Losi, Adrian Demain, Mike Folmer, Henry Hester,
Dave Andrecht, Eric Grisham, Shogo Kubo, Chris
Strople, Steve Olson, Jesse Martinez, Stacy Peralta,
Eric Dressen and Tony Alva. Some say nostalgia is the
currency of the new millennium. Is old bold or just
long gone?
Rip in Peace
Scott Stamnes
1970-2000
...was killed in early December in France by someone who had
just stolen a car. The fourteen year old thief stole not only a car,
but a friend of many. Scott grew up in the Seattle area and spent
most of his life on some kind of board. He was an incredible
surfer, snowboarder and skater, but more than that, he was seri-
ously one of the best people in the world. I don't know anyone
who met him who didn't like him.
Through all of the sessions, road trips, and parties, Scott was
always connected to something higher. His respect for nature
was inherent. His talent innate. Scott did frontside inverts in the
Westside Bowl like it was candy. His service was SRO. His ashes
are to be scattered in the places he loved the most. Scott's mem-
ory will never fade from those who loved him, and I know
everyone he came in contact with walked away a better person
from knowing him. Wez Lundry
BAD GIRLZ
The mystery surrounding the disappearance of
Adam Yauch's Cadillac endures. The luxury vehicle
was found stashed at the Topanga Ramp, which is a
long, long way from the Beastie Boy's garage. Looking
like he was in the driver's seat was Grand Royal func-
tionary Ian Rodgers who claimed it was a fan
promo prize.
Portraits done by Deanna Templeton, Elissa
Steamer, Cheryl Dunn, Ione Sky and Marsea
Goldberg are being shown at New Image Art in Los
Angeles.
