THE TRACKS*****
PRIORITY FREIGHT
HIS MONTH'S PRIORITY FREIGHT
consists of strictly thugged-out East
Coast gangster shit. If you listen to
Nature's For All Seasons, Shyne's self-
titled, and M.O.P.'s Warriorz LPs back to
back to back, you'll hear more threats
than a month's worth of WWF Monday
Nitros, more gun references than an NRA
convention, and the N-word more times
than at a KKK cookout. But if that's what
makes you feel like a G when it's pumping
through your headphones, then these guys
have what you need. Nature definitely has
the best lyrics of the bunch. I read that
he thinks Ultimate High is one of his
weaker songs; thankfully someone else
was picking the singles, because with the
ill flutes and Nas blessing the chorus and
a quick verse, it's probably the best cut on
there. Shyne is Puffy's latest protégé and it
shows with the lack of lyrics about any-
thing but money, drugs, and bitches.
Shyne is the little cat who sounds like
Biggie, and he's very concerned about
making sure you know that he used to sell
drugs and he's willing to do it again if
you're interested. He also takes a tip
from his teacher P-Diddy and bites lyrics

consistently; approximately one in four songs lifts a line or two from
Snoop Dogg. On the upside however, the beats are pretty banging;
from EZ Elpee to the Neptunes, it's the producers who shine on this
record. The production is also tight on M.O.P.'s third album, Warriorz
As always, DJ Premier came through with some heaters, but nothing
could overshadow M.O.P.'s shouting and screaming into the micro-
phone. How about some lozenges? No? I guess they like it raw.

FOREIGN LEGION
S
ITTING AROUND THE TABLE IN FRONT OF ME ARE FOREIGN
Legion's Prozak, Mark Stretch, and DJ Design. Foreign Legion's
album: Kidnapper Van, Beats To Go And Steal Bikes To caught
my attention a while back. What really stood out on the album, along
with the title and the high school band photo, were the things Foreign
Legion were saying-things that I feel badly need to be said in hip-hop
right now. What makes Foreign Legion even more exciting is they are
from San Francisco. Ladies and gentlemen, let's give a big hand for the
Bay Area and Foreign Legion. Lock your bikes up; they're coming.
How did you come up with the name
Kidnapper Van?
DJ Design: My brother had a big ol' orange van that
he put a carpet and a waterbed in the back of and he
just drove around and scared kids.
Prozak: Sometimes we would go steal bikes with the
kid still on and just put it straight into the van.
When was the last time you went out
stealing bikes?
Mark Stretch: You want to know the last successful
time? I still can't go into Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart jail
ain't fun; you gotta eat that stale popcorn when
you're there.
P: He got chased by a security guard one time and
had to act like a mannequin for 45 minutes until he
could get away.
What good thing about the Bay Area got
lost with the dot-com invasion?
P: Good instant conversation. Everybody is always
talking about work these days.
DJD: Everybody I meet now works in the computer
industry. I personally don't know ȧ damn thing about
computers. We still get our email on a Commodore 64.
On the album you say, "If you wanna be
underground, go buy a shovel." Do you
think the word underground has been
played out?
P: Yeah. Cats are not putting out quality music, but
152 THRASHER
they're like, "Well, it's underground."
DJD: We hear a lot of MCs who have a demo tape
or something, and they'll say, "Check out my tape;
it's underground," and you hear it and it's the most
boring loop.
How did you cats get into Noam Chomsky?
P: It was listening to Art Bell.
MS: I collect Art Bell shit 'cause Art Bell went off the
air. I got Art Bell action figures, records, even Art Bell
bell-bottoms.
P: Art Bellbottoms!
How do you feel about George W. Bush
becoming the president of America know-
ing that he has executed more black peo-
ple in his term as governor of Texas than
any other governor anywhere, ever?
MS: We're not down with that, not to mention in '83
he bit my windmill, and I have been pissed at him ever
since. And check this: he bit my style wearing bicycle
gloves with the fingers chopped off.
P: That shit was decided a year ago. He goes into.
inner cities and tries to be down with the kids.
DJD: I don't think he will get in.
What do you think triggered the violence at
The Source Awards?
P: Egos.
MS: It was definitely a collection of egos. From what
I heard, before anyone even got there people who
lived here were telling people from other places,
"Don't come here wearing all your necklaces and stuff
'cause we gonna jack ya," so shit was going down
before it even got started.
DJD: Someone stole a bicycle belonging to Sisqo.
On the album you have that loop,
"Everybody's Sleeping." Do you think
everybody is sleeping?
P: Not since Fight Club came out; that was a wake-
up call to everyone who works in corporate America.
DJD: People are just on their little hamster wheels.
MS: You see 'em coming home from work on BART;
they have no expression on their faces. They're just in
the zone.
On the album you talk a lot about conspir-
acies. What is your favorite conspiracy the-
ory, knowing that there is no conspiracy
and no theory?
P: I have to go with Burt Reynolds' toupee; he
has more hair now than he did when Stroker Ace
came out.
How do you feel about the FBI listening to
everything we just talked about?
P: It's all good, as long as they do something
funky with it.
MS: Just as long as they sample it.
