rom the label that brought us minimalist, post rock lumi-
naries like Will Oldham, Gastr Del Sol, and some
ground for old school, genuine heavy metal. Their new dar-
lings, The Fucking Champs, are mixture of Rush,
Dökken, a little '80s Night Ranger, and some Slayer
(with half the teeth and no double bass drums). And the best
part: the entire record, save the last track, is completely
instrumental. Sure, it may sound like the soundtrack to a
horrible Charlie Sheen movie at times, but it is 100%
metal without pretense, irony, or the horrible Dungeons
and Dragons lyrics. Very impressive... Braid is back-well
sort of. Actually, three quarters of the highly prolific band have
reformed under the Hey Mercedes moniker. On their self-titled
EP, newcomer Mark Dawursk joins Damon Atkinson,
Robert Nanna, and Todd Bell for a handful of super catchy, fairly
upbeat tunes, with the first track "Bells" the clear standout. Given the

kateboarding and rock and roll are a natural combination, and the
Experience Music Project in Seattle obviously realized that when they were put
interviews with some of the originators, and although the skate-punk display is a small
piece of the museum's collection it still has some amazing stuff. Steve Turner, a long
time skater and musician, did many of the interviews for the museum and had the idea
of throwing an event dedicated to skateboarding and punk rock. The museum went
with it, and came up with "Hey Punk," an event held in August. They pulled out
a lot of stops and brought up a historical cast of punks, skaters, and miscre
ants including Duane Peters, Steve Olson (the old one, kids), Tony
Alva, Skip Engblom, Brian Brannon, CR Stecyk, Glen E
Friedman, O, Chris Cornell, TSOL, JFA, Agent Orange, and
the Monkeywrench, as well as a bunch of Seattle area guys
Doug "Pineapple" Saladino even made a showing
The event featured panels on skateboard

ing, punk, and media, a showing
of the film Fruit of the Vine, and
workshops that included slide shows
talks on old equipment and collecting, and
Monk even gave a hilarious talk about DIY
skateparks. Saturday was the big day, with the bands
band's pedigree, it will be no time before they ascend to likely
deserved status of scene darlings. -Joseph Epstein...A reissue
that has been out for a while but just found its way into my "
hands is an LP by The Boys. They were a glam band in the
early '70s, à la Johnny Thunders, called The Hollywood
Brats, but they went punk in the middle of the decade. Their LPs
have been reissued, and the two to pay attention to are the first self-
titled LP and the second, Alternative Chartbusters. Blasting British '70s
punk that is so catchy at the same time. Their first one hasn't left my
turntable in weeks...Another reissue worthy of note is The Odd
Numbers' About Time. Originally released 10 years ago as a cassette
only, their poppy, mod-punk caught on and was featured in a few skate videos,
most famously the New Deal video. They're gonna be putting out some new stuff on
their new label, Coldfront, but since this one never made it on CD they decided to put it back
out...From Albuquerque, New Mexico, live by way of Seattle, comes a new Weird Lovemakers
LP. The Breakroom doesn't have the best sound, but this stuff came out pretty good on the other
side of the board. Pretty speedy punk, not too many chords to bog down your brain, another
fine entry into the eMpTy catalog...On the print front, Ripple is a zine from Bandung,
Indonesia, and the issue I have (#3) features brief interviews with a bunch of skaters, band
interviews, some pictures of girls, a Chester Brown interview, and skate reports. This one also comes
with a comp tape of four Indopunk bands: Koil, Savor of Filth, The Bride, and Elektrofux. Send a couple
bucks to J1, Dipatiukur No. 99, Bandung, 40132 Indonesia... Until next time... -Wez Lundry
playing and a demo with all the big guns at the Seattle skatepark
right across the street. For being such a blown-out event it was pretty fun, o
things considered. The EMP people went out of their way to keep people happy
One unfortunate exception was the Seattle Center's James Crabtree, who
doesn't know anything about skateboarding and doesn't even seem to actually
like skateboarders, but who has somehow milked a paycheck from it for sev
eral years. I guess leeches exist everywhere...One of the most bizarre spec
tacles was seeing TSOL broadcast live and loud outside of the museum
next to a family amusement park-completely uncensored, lewd jokes
swearing and all. The big disappointment was that out of all of the
legendary pool skaters who showed up, none of the big gun
came to skate the West Seattle bowl. I guess Salba
off the hook because he's hurt, but come on
guys. Next time take a brief break from
the hype and hit the real shit. Ther
is nothing more true that something
conceived and built by skaters for skaters
The Westsiders weren't fazed, and the
