Being a true skateboarder comes
from the heart. Alva, Peters, Olsen,
Salba, Cab, Hosoi, Hackett-I thank
you guys for being real. "One hun-
dred percent skateboarders for life."
You guys all have given me memo-
ries I'll never forget. I could name
way more. Remember, ego is poison.
No matter how good you skate
you're no better than anyone else.
Don't cheat yourself by limiting
yourself to one area. The terrain is
built again... take advantage of it; it
might not last. I'm locked up for a
stupid drug offense, doing a 10-year
term. I can't even express how
important being sober will benefit
your life. Consider your generation
lucky you don't have to do drugs to
be cool. I can speak from experi-
ence, DRUGS WILL TAKE YOU
DOWN. You might think drinking
is cool, but who ever liked skating
with a hangover? Liquid courage is
for guys who can't handle it sober.
Anyway, I don't want to sound like
some lame-ass telling you what to
do. Hopefully you might take advice
from somebody who's been there
and done it. You wouldn't wanna be
walking in my shoes right now.
Remember, respect anybody who
rides a skateboard. I mean thank
God they ain't rollerblading!
Here we go again. Thanks to MTV
and ESPN, skateboarding appears to
be the "in" sport again. The
"extreme" thing is to listen to alter-
native soft rock too. Dye your hair,
get a tattoo, and you're almost pro.
Learn how to kickflip down stairs
and you can have your own model.
I've seen this shit happen before. Pro
today, gone tomorrow. End up
fuckin' riding rollerblades or moun-
tain bikes. What I'm getting at is if
you're gonna be a skateboarder,
don't think 'cause you can bust
handrails your shit is cooler than the
guy who cruises down the street
with his chick. Pro skateboarders
used to do it all-street skate to
school, skate a backyard pool after-
wards, vert ramp at the park at
night, then slam in a contest on the
weekend. When's the last time you
hit 50 down a hill? To all you so-
called "street pros," I gotta admit
you guys blow my mind. You've
taken freestyle to another level. With
all the new skateparks around the
United States you have no excuse
not to ride vert. Remember vert
guys have always ruled; they're the
top of the skateboarder food chain.
Don't get me wrong; I have respect
for anybody who skates, but I get
tired of hearing punks talk shit
about how much better they are
then the old school has-beens.
Nobody ever stays at the top forever.
Mark my words, nine out of 10 top
