NOTES FROM THE
A
hh,
the
UND&GROUND
Eyeliners-three
chicks who are probably sis-
ters, but in my eyes there's a
hot mom (the one with the guitar), a sul-
try, rebellious daughter (on the bass),
and a wacky yet cool sister/aunt (on the
U.S. BOMBS drums). You know, sorta like Roseanne
and her daughter, along with their
wacky yet cool sister/aunt on that once popular NBC sitcom. One major
difference, however, is that the Eyeliners are foxy, foxy, foxy. And yet they
rock too. Never mind the fact that their native New Mexico is fully ablaze
in government-sponsored forest fires of their own. They just recently
toured the States with a brand new disc stuffed in the back pockets of their
tight black jeans. It's called Here Comes Trouble, and don't
ask me what it sounds like 'cause I ain't heard it. However,
if it's anything along the lines of what these three skirts
kicked out over at Al's Bar the other night then, whew! Hot
damn! Steal that disc (better yet, steal the LP). Steal it espe-
cially because it's on Lookout!, and everyone knows those
guys are making way too much loot these days. If you do
catch an Eyeliners show, however, then you're in for a
treat, 'cause first of all, the hot mom guitarist is a contor-
tionist of sorts. She gets all bent over backwards and
tweaks her ankles to the breaking point while playing the
guitar behind her head. The drummer is the lead singer
and destroyer of rinky-dink drum kits, and the bass player,
as I mentioned above, is sultry. All of this from a band that
would be great to watch even if they just stood there and
played their instruments with their heads down! Don't
miss these chicks if they come to town, 'cause word has
it that they like to neck...Now on to that pesky
Japan report. It's been a long time
since I had a listen to the
Registrators' first full length,
Terminal Boredom, seeing as
Cole, San Pedro's answer to
KATE
the US Bombs, Union 13, Lost Cause, and the mother of all punk
bands, Ol' Lee Vings, incarnate of Fear. The sounds were good, the ramp
kinda sucked, but Justin Strubing, Max Schaaf, and even Andy Roy
made an appearance. Kinda budge, kinda rad. Steve Soto...As far as
somewhat small punk rock labels go, our East Bay friends at Adeline
Records have pretty much stolen the show on the sick release front this
year. First it was the second effort by One Man Army. Now they've been
kind enough to put out split 7" of Dillinger Four and Pinhead
Gunpowder tunes. For those who haven't yet figured it out, D4 are the
punkest gig around right now, bleedin' all over their instruments and pow-
ering through the melodies and gettin' all tatted up with SSD song titles
and such. The Pinhead Gunpowder lineup reads like a who's who of the
East Bay, all with Aaron from that one notable late 80's Crimpshrine
ORKS
SANTA CREE
...THE SOUNDS WERE GOOD,
THE RAMP KIND OF SUCKED...
Martha Stewart, stole my LP some two years past. However, I just so
happen to possess a super-human memory chip in my skull, so I vividly
recall just how whippersnappingly fast and poppy that there album is. Now,
just when I had begun to think that the Registrators had given up and
gone back to their day jobs (Terminal Boredom was released like 100 years
ago), out pops a big-ass double LP by them called Sixteen Wires From the
New Provacate. Sure, that's a real fancy title for an album released by those
garage rock hooligans over at Rip Off Records, but hey, these Registrators
come from the high tech capital of the world-they need a fancy title to
go with all those fancy gadgets over there in Tokyo. While some of the
songs on this recording are straight out slop, bucket-pop punk along the
lines of their earlier stuff, a lot of it is actually pretty sophisticated-sound-
ing noise. Melodic, guitar driven songs with at least three different lead
vocalists that remind me of stuff by other Japanese band of the past like
the Raydios and Teengenerate. I called Rip Off impresario Greg
Lowry to find out when the Registrators would be getting over here to
play, and he said something about October. He also informed me that they
had just recently left his label (seems like this always happens to this guy!)
for a major Japanese one. Do yourself and Mr. Lowry a favor and pick up
Sixteen Wires the next time you go record shopping. They also got it on CD
so you really have no excuse at all. Bye. -Andy Harris...Billed as a "Music
Skateboard Extravaganza," Santa Cruz's Civic Auditorium hosted some
bands, and there was even a mini-ramp. For 20 bucks it was pricey to see
146 THRASHER
band and Billy, who aside from PG over-
JUSTIN STRUBING
sees Adeline and tours with an arena rock outfit. As 7"s go, this is some
of the finer vinyl to pass through here in a while and well worth the min-
imal bucks it'll cost for you to own one. Adeline also just put out a solid
compilation called Might As Well, Can't Dance, composed of new songs by
the likes of Samiam, Common Rider, Free Beer and the Frustrators;
hell, they're 15 bands and I don't quite know who to prop out. Quality
punk rock, as contradicting as that sounds. Ryan Henry...Orange
County's Ignite has recently been gallavanting about much of the US and
some of Europe on a lengthy tour in support of their new album. This is
the band's first release after signing onto TVT records, and I would have
to say the flavor hasn't changed a bit. As of press time they are starting
out their latest leg of the tour with the Misfits. Grade of Canada have
also been on tour about the US (their second in the past nine months
along with the Explosion and Cave In. The lucky people
SF were also
treated to the Nerve Agents' record release party for Days of the White
Owl in conjunction with the Canadian/Northeastern US invasion. So if
you missed out, too bad. The Explosion will be a band to watch, with an
initial full length Flash, Flash, Flash just released on Jade Tree. OG punk à
la Sex Pistols, the Clash, and Stiff Little Fingers. Also in Jade Tree
news, new material from Jets To Brazil will be available in early August,
and a discography of the great late-'80s early-'90s hardcore outfit
Turning Point is now available. -Tim Butler'
